Starbound is too Difficult!

As a veteran of many "this is too hard" survival games (My favourite being better than wolves, for minecraft) - my one piece of advice is this:

    Adapt.

No challenge cannot be overcome with practice and patience. And you'll feel like a baws when you figure out the right strategies and scrape together the right tools for the job. A victory handed to you doesn't feel like a victory at all, right now I'd say Starbound feels about right - they need fix the one-shot kill aerial baddies. But overall the combat is sufficiently deadly to be a challenge, but not so hard that you cannot find a solution. (including but not limited to running away and getting better gear via mining)

It honestly sounds to me like you should just wait for a "Creative mode" or "Director mode" as I believe they are calling it, it's the actual combat style itself you are struggling with, so unless all your weapons oneshot and all the enemys do no damage no amount of "Balancing" is going to assist there.

Alienating may not have been the right word. You are excluding them from your opinion. I mean the game might be more enjoyable for those who like adventure and the "hard survival game" but for people who like the creative touch and the resource gathering appeal, it's just meh. Your skill is probably much better than mine. Every time I swing a sword the opposite monster always got a hit on me dealing 3 to 4 bars of damage. This is on the surface during day too. Do I dare think about night?

Either way you look at it, the game should appeal to pretty much everyone. Some games are able to do that, such as a game that is made by Notch.

See before the patch I did just fine; the armor was good, I'll admit the starting weapons were a bit OP (I had "the pecker" do like 100 hp to anyone who dare face me that wasn't level 5 or above.)

But now after the update I am getting my ass handed to me be nearly everything. The flying monsters finally got smarter but now I'm getting hit by fire-breath that's literally doing 10 hp a tick. I'm eating up bandaged like candy and I got a full set of copper armor which, get this, has the same armor rating as the starting clothing when you make your guy.

I can't even venture too far from a sleeping item or a slightly bigger monster will one hit my back to my ship.

And before you say anything, I know its beta, this I'm not going to shy away form this game easily. So I expect a few ups and downs here and there with every patch. But I want to see this game succeed.

No, I dislike creative. I've explained my self in one post above.

Don't even get me started on minecraft. Surival mode at night is a nightmare! I don't even dare step out at night because I get killed so fast it's ridiculous. I end up having to turn on creative mode when I want to go mining at night. In fact, on a fresh world, my #1 priority is to build a house with a bed and light before doing absolutely anything else.

it's ok , no need to get angry. I personally think you have a good point ; Everyone appreciate games differently. I prefer very hard games but when i made my minecraft server to play with my friends , some of them wanted an easier gameplay since they play more casually than me , and i understand them and you.

In the future , we can hope that chucklefish will add different difficulty level so that everyone can have fun with Starbound. That's what Minecraft did and it worked very well for me and my friends.

From what I heard, the Glitch weapons that can be crafted currently are doing less damage than intended. That might be part of your problem. You should be able to find some weapons and the bow that you can build is still good. And you should be able to find a half decent weapon from exploring.

As I've said though, juggle your enemies. Even with the worst weapon as long as you have the rhythm down you can advance through the game. If you feel the enemies are doing unrealistic amounts of damage with their abilities, you may have a bad planet. You can get some coal and put it in your ship to try a different one.

But your problem isn't with the actual difficulty, if you are getting hit multiple times before you actually land a blow unless all challenge is completely removed (Creative mode) you are always going to struggle.

Creative mode where you have to mine your resources i guess, is specifically what it looks like you are looking for.

I'm afraid it's likely you are going to have to wait till actual release for any form of "Difficulty toggle" similar to Minecrafts Passive mode, or perhaps someone here: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?forums/mod-releases-modding-help.111/ can assist you.

One of the advantages of games like this(And Minecraft) is that they are mod friendly, and you likely aren't the only person who can't cut the combat so more likely than not someone will make a mod for it if it's not an official feature.

Lights are your friends. Once you understand how light works and that monsters only spawns in certain light condition , it's easy to secure a whole area. The first objective i had on any server i made for my friends was to secure the spawn area ; to cut all the trees , block all natural caverns and place torch everywhere in sight and around our whole camp so that monsters cant spawn in sight.

Badly unbalanced with the new update - armor does virtually NOTHING to protect you now, shields don't work AT ALL for me :(

Not trying to sound like a dick or anything right now, but maybe you should wait before you try to play starbound just for the building aspect of it.

The current focus seems to be around combat and the such.

Minecraft alienated me. It was too damn easy and just got easier and easier and more and more casual. Eventually survival in minecraft was a joke; if you died you had to be a terribad player.

Starbound is just about right where it is now, the enemies are dangerous enough to give me some apprehension and add some tension to exploration - if they make it any easier it'll be a boring face-roll

Make bandages then, they heal you three times faster than any bed.

A condescending attitude towards a person doesn't help, but only serves to make an enemy of.

I have to agree the recent balance patch seems to make things a little too difficult at the start. I had before the patch and i thought the difficulty was comfortable. Now I constantly get ganged up on by a mob of 3-5 enemies and with in 2-3 hits i am dead. i am able to make a hit and run tactic with a single enemy work for the most part. but i gotta say chain dying from a mob of enemies is getting a little annoying. not saying the game needs to be easy just a little tweaking on the starter planet difficulty would be nice.

I have to disagree with you. I like a game that gives me a moderate challenge, I don't want to steamroll over everything but I also don't want to rip my hair off fighting a few mere mobs ala Dark Souls.
Its not perfect, its far from being so and we're in beta stage, so any constructive feedback IS welcome - but the issue is, should the devs work body and soul over relative things? You say its bad, I say its fine as it is. Dozens of other people already had this discussion before - hard, easy, hard, easy - its freaking subjective! Are the devs going to play ping-pong with the game whenever someone complains about the difficulty now?

    I think not.

  20. It sounded condescending, 'Oh you're new to videogames? Maybe try something less complex, like Pong?' That's what it sounded like in my head when I read that.

If that's not what you meant then it's cool and we can just continue with the discussion at hand and not make this into an irrelevant derailment.
