Starbound is Not Sci-fi Enough(or Logical Enough)

    DepressedNerd Hey, You!

Here are some thoughts for the devs after playing through another wipe.

    1. The Combat: It's a sci-fi game that dominated by cold-steel swords! In a sci-fi game, I would anticipate a combat experience like Mass Effect and Fallout, which are both balanced around guns without leaving melee weapons obsolete. The energy system is what screws the guns so bad that the game returns to medieval warfare.

    HOW TO IMPROVE:

    • I think the game could borrow ideas from Mass Effect. The "thermal clip" system would improve ranged weapons. The guns should be powerful, but limited to the amount of thermal clips you carry (each gun should have separated magazine.)
    • The melee weapons should be the last resort for combat. "Knocking back effect" should be the main reason for using them.

    2. The Airless Environment: As a physics major, I think the game is quite funny with its mechanics. A campfire in space? Using the breathing mechanics in water? Seriously? And the gravity mechanics in asteroid fields makes Newton cry.

    HOW TO IMPROVE:

    • Exploring asteroid fields and moons should be a experience AFTER you obtain your spacesuit and survival system(or at least the latter). Camp fire and torches shouldn't be able to use in space.
    • Maneuvering environment without gravity should rely on grappling hooks and "thrust" equipment for the sake of Newtonian mechanics.[IMG]
    • Building lunar bases and asteroid bases requires an airlock system.

Its not suppose to be anything but what it is. Its your problem if you feel the need to classify it. In SBs universe, swords are still relevant. Simple as that.

    Nope not true

Classification doesn't justify space camp fire.

Science Fiction doesn't mean you can't have fires in space, along with melee weapons being the staple of the universe.

Who said they are even in a universe that has the same rules as ours? Even if they are in a different universe it is still Sci-Fi, and also respect the second half of that, Fiction. Perhaps they have special fire that works in space in that universe.
You make a valid point, I commend you greatly :)

The issue with mixing sci-fi and fantasy into one game is that the created universe is just that, its own universe. There's nothing stopping it from having different rules. For all we know, lore wise, fire could work by a complete separate set of laws in the Starbound universe. However, classification issues aside, I'd just like to point out that this is still the first stage of beta, and space-fire isn't quite gamebreaking enough for the Devs to put aside work on core-features just to fix it.

SB classifies itself. So if it wants to be a bastardization of the sci-fi & fantasy genre with fire in space and swords, thats what it will be. Its creating its own canon, so its pointless to argue what it should or shouldnt do based on a genre you feel it suppose to represent.

Let's **** all logic in a sci-fi universe. FYI, North Korean just landed on the sun.

Also we have FTL drives and matter-manipulators, but we use swords and pickaxes.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, your point is invalid. Raiden uses a sword and kicks ass and sure that isn't quite FTL levels of tech in that Universe but I mean sword that can cut a Metal Gear in half in the first 10 minutes pretty much proves a good point. Swords are badass.

Uhh.. Its a GAME, it's not a science simulator. The mechanics chosen by the devs are because they (and many of us) find it to be FUN!

Quit mixing up Science Fiction with Future Fiction. Not everything Sci-Fi is SUPER TECHNOLOGY SPACE ADVENTURES WITH EVERYTHING EVER.

And lower your fucking text size. There's no fucking need of that.

1 Starbound is not a pure SciFI game, its a casual comedy with scifi, fantasy, and all other elements in pot luck
    2. Starbound is not realistic - Hence physics can be as wacky as possible.

Sigh, the flaming was overkill. The OP has valid points. Sure, you can argue it's fiction so nothing needs logic, but that doesn't mean the OP is out of line requesting logic in a game that's half science. His point of reasoning is not invalid. The game is based *loosely* on what we know of the universe thus far. Those things include that fire requires oxygen, and space has none.
