Starbound, feeling a little let down

    1) Sure, but it'll be fixed, shouldn't be disappointed, beta is beta.

    2) That's on your end, i don't have it happening to me so it has nothing to do with the game, unless you have very outdated hardware or something.

    3) Get a bigger monitor or wait for them to patch it, beta is beta, not a massive flaw so again, shouldn't be feeling let down.

    4) I used to run Minecraft on a 4 year old gaming rig at max settings with 60fps which almost never dropped below 55, those are not games that require a decent gaming rig, if you can't run this, your machine is outdated.

    5) Only point i agree with you on.

    6) I haven't experienced any of these.

I think developers of games will stop using "features" such as early access to get their game out to the people ASAP. So many people have a hard time grasping the concept that you are purchasing an unfinished game.

I will make a suggestion for the TS, because I know it can be frustrating when its not working. 1. Go to the "In Game & Billing Support" forum for your 2) game starts only 1 in 4 times and 6) game is full of little bugs issues. Your efforts on these forums would be better served if you put your energy in to helping the devs instead of complaining to them. Give them your system specs, provide them with the info they are hoping you will provide them with to help with optimization. Also telling a dev their unfinished game has bugs does nothing. Again go to their bug forum (listed above) and specify the bug you are experiencing. Be specific. Help them.

For 5) the tutorial is EXTREMELY ambiguous, it says do X without telling you that you need to do Y and Z first, or how thats done. There is a suggestion forum. The devs released the game as is, and in turn they have asked the community to step up and help shape the game. If you got a better idea on something, speak up, in the right forum. They are asking this of you so do it. It doesn't take hardly any time at all. Matter of fact in the time you spent creating this thread, you could have had 2 or 3 productive threads started in the proper forums.

Lastly, and I can't stress this enough but don't ever right a review like this again in a game that is in a beta.

That feel, when people join an early beta and expect it to be the glamorous, majestic finished product with all features implemented and no bugs. Then, they are met with bugs, beta gameplay and performance and say they are let down by the game that is currently unfinished.

    Bad Feel.

Also, this guy seems like he's trolling more than anything. A launcher window complaint? Really?

Well, while I understand being upset at having difficulty playing the game... saying things like "this should NOT be happening" - well, I mean... that's the actual point of a Beta. They can't possibly test in-house on all possible hardware and software configurations. In an ideal world it would function on every possible combination as soon as Beta releases, but that's rarely if ever true. Here's hoping it gets fixed for you soon, though.

Read in to what you are purchasing at the moment. Its not like they tried to hide the fact so after reading this (its understandable that you missed this) you can rest assure that you just didn't know what you were buying in to at this phase. Come back in a few weeks. See what phase they are in and if you can tolerate playing the game in that state.

And ya the "this is beta" defense goes a long way if you know what you are getting yourself in to.

Stage 1 will be move at a breakneck speed. This will be the buggiest and busiest stage of the beta. A bunch of unfinished features will be disabled whilst we finish them up. Updates will come thick and fast, sometimes as often as multiple updates a day.

If you choose to take part during stage 1 you should expect bugs, lots of balance changes, you shouldn’t get too attached to your character or universe as we may make changes that require you to start from scratch. You should expect the game to be broken at points as we make sweeping changes but you’ll get to enjoy exciting new content added constantly. The engine won’t optimized during this stage of the beta so performance could be poor on some low end machines.

You’ll get to see a bunch of ‘behind the scenes’ content at this stage and provide feedback during this crucial period.

DO take part in this stage if:

    - You enjoy testing buggy and unfinished code

    - You enjoy providing feedback

    - You want to leave your mark on the game

    - You just can’t wait any longer

DO NOT take part in this stage if:

    - Bugs infuriate you

    - You don’t like spoilers

    - You can’t stand losing your save

    - You want the full Starbound ‘experience’ the first time you play.

you have to hear him out, though -- for all of us who preordered the game like myself, we can expect bugs and crashes up the arse and should do our best to submit error logs to help them find solutions. However, is it ethical to be selling beta in its current state? usually, an indie developer is lucky to get any significant funding, if any during the early stages of development. the current test phase seems like it should be for early access folks who preordered the game, followed by closed beta for those who did not preorder but got an invite key, followed by open beta down the road for those who are interested in purchasing the game at which point it is mostly complete, followed by awesome content updates. they successfully pushed another $1.5mil fundraiser by selling a game in alpha to those who expected a beta. all the better for me though, the more money they get, the better the finished product, i imagine :)

I completely understand the frustration of encountering issues like the ones OP described, but at the risk of sounding trite, it's kind of what we signed up for. We paid for a finished product and as a bonus were granted access to the work in progress builds. That being said, I don't think there's quite such a need to rag on the fellow for providing feedback. As generally unspecific as it is, the devs DO benefit from knowing the approximate number of people encountering these issues, and it's unlikely they have any way of determining those figures without forum feedback.

In conclusion, I think the tone and intention of posts like this should be shifted a bit. In this stage of a game's development these issues are to be expected and feedback welcomed--just make certain that in providing that feedback you are as constructive and specific as you can be. That will go a great ways toward helping the devs to make this the game we are all waiting so eagerly for.

sorry for the double post, but this sort of thinking needs to be nipped in the bud ASAP. We did not purchase a beta product. We purchased a finished product, and in time that is what we will receive. BEFORE that time, however, we were given access to a BETA build as a BONUS. We are playing this game to provide feedback to ensure a better finished product. Expecting anything more is misguided--we may enjoy playing the game as it is right now, but our primary goal should be to provide feedback to help craft the finished product that we are all going to receive.

The most crash fixes got solved by starting the game with the steam library.. and choose "Run Safemode"

Except the majority of the complaints are attributed to the fact that it's an early beta build which plays more like a late alpha.
Instead of making a thread expressing disappointment in the general forum, he could easily have gone and reported the bugs. Being disappointed in a game this early in release development because of bugs is just silly.

Example: In my experience, the fullscreen option is completely broken. Enabling it zooms in the game to about x10 what it should be, rendering it unplayable unless I close and restart it. But instead of making a thread about it, I reported the bug and went on my way.

Perhaps it was a bit of an overreaction to a semantic issue, and for that I apologize if I offended.

I read the part where you said "However, is it ethical to beselling beta in its current state?" and just felt the need to correct that sort of sentiment. Reading that one line colored my interpretation of your entirely reasonable post, and I'm sorry for having leaped on you so ferociously.

    1) Try changing your resolution, on my computer the launcher doesn't fill the screen but the game does

    2) I haven't had a crash since the most recent update

    3) My game has been remembering my options, maybe yours is just forgetful

    4) I guess it does seem a bit resource intensive in task manager I see it's taking 1000+ kb memory

    5) Well for the recipes you can see them in your crafting

    6) Hud disappearing isn't a bug it happens if you hit F1 if you hit it again the hud will return

Heh no need for apology, I am aware that I have bad manners and can be rather blunt, especially on the internet. I personally am stoked for SB's potential and Chucklefish has my full support and that means my friends and their friends +++ but there is certainly another side, and those people have valid points to make but it can be difficult to express, especially when angered. how i interpret the OP is, he felt cheated. whether that's his fault (by not reading phase 1 disclaimer, presumably) or not doesn't matter as much as: this is how he feels, right now. which is a good sign that these are his primary complaints, because they are all issues that will be fixed by stage 3 or earlier.
