So I read something about steam causing issues with starbound, so I wanted to do a test with the non-steam version included with the game...

However, upon launching, I quickly discovered my characters and universe don't exist in this version... launching the steam version results in my data being there...

So what is going on here?

    Are you using workshop mods?

You'll have to cope these mods into starbounds mods folder.
Workshop mods aren't loaded when starbound is started without steam.

Also which issues should steam cause with starbound? When it is because of the overlay you can simply disable it in the steam settings for the game (right click on starbound -> properties).

I don't remember the exacts, but I figured it was worth a test. Where are the workshop mods saved to, and where should I put them then?

    Workshop mods are located in:
    Code:
    steam install path\SteamApps\workshop\content\211820
The folders there will contain a .pak file. You'll have to rename those files and copy them to:
    Code:
    steam install path\SteamApps\common\Starbound\mods
Make sure that the .pak files are located in the mods folder. Also renaming is necessary because they're all named contents.pak and would override each other.
Copying the folders directly won't work because starbound doesn't recognize .pak files recursive.
