Starbound becoming too child friendly?

    Poop is puerile.

    Boobs are mature.

There is a difference. A difference that you can't see from my example because I'm an idiot.

    Wat?

What more do you want... A Novakid saloon? With card minigames, billiards, cheap bets, a lot of smoke and girls looking at you in a funny way? Cuz all this can be arranged with a mod. :mwahaha:

Don't mind me, I'm just searching for the link to that mod.

Whiskey had a use before because it somehow filled the old hunger bar. That could arguably be considered a reward for drinking alcohol, which is not child friendly at all.
But what modders do is out of the devs hands. So I won't be surprised if I see a marijuana farm mod...

    Modding eh?

I all honesty, while the game seems to ave potential for a more darker type of ambiance (and the tools for it), I don't see that hapening a lot, honestly.

Sure, ya got whiskey, Cyanider, and all that stuff, but it just doesent seem to be aiming that way,and it never really did.

Eh, I also dont see the game benefiting from it either.

To be honest, the writers have been toning down on the darker themes in the lore itself, from the changes I saw reading the wiki.

For the Humans, there was a whole war for resources going on that has been very downplayed as of late. Floran cannibalism is also rarely touched on, but is a thing, last I've heard. Glitch outcasts were downright rounded up and executed before being retconned into just ostracism and exile (it is hinted that they still attempt to "repurpose" some of the glitch outcasts).

The only thing that remains largely the same are the Avian sacrificial ritualism and the whole Apex's orwellian totallitarism.

I haven't seen such to take place. The lore has been pretty stagnant in those subjects. The resource war for humans has never been much of a plot point, just mentioned in passing only in the official introduction and one codex.
Did they retcon Glitch lore? The official intro should still be canon and executions in the process. yay murder

Latest things they did were introducing the floran-Hylotl war and some Agaran stuff, for example the story where one shroomie goes berserk and murders entire avian crew. So I wouldn't say anything in the lore department is being toned down.

I hope the lore for the Hylotl is really dark and violent. That'll be fun.

I'm sorry but who the hell sits around thinking "OMG where's the whisky bottle, this game is getting dumbed down"......literally, who bloody cares? It's a meaningless item that does nothing.....and no it really shouldn't fill the hunger bar lol. For all the difference it makes it may as well have been a rock or "useless junk".....which it actually was....there's no reason why something like that should limit the audience of this game and absolutely no reason why kids or soccer moms or anyone else should be unable to enjoy this game....that's what easy mode is for.

Since when has floran been a cannibal? I have only heard them being carnivore... It actually state that word somewhere? Been hearing people mention of that, but don't quite get where they are getting that idea from...

What's wrong with appealing to the general demographic of children? It's a huge money maker and if you're going to say "It makes things too easy!" or "It make everything froo-froo happyland!" then I have two words for you, one of which is not very child-appropriate.

Now, on to the more verbose answer(s):

Difficulty settings exist so that people of all ages can chose to play the way they want to. That's it. You're not forced to play on Casual.

Secondly, what in the name of fladoodles is wrong with a world being happy? I, for one, don't play video games to be depressed. I play video games to cheer myself up and distract myself from real life. If I wanted grimdark (for whatever reason), I would not have bought a cute-looking game with flower people in it. =/

For one, this Floran armour set is called Cannibal's set
    [IMG]

And I think I've read it on some unofficial wikia:
    Here's the text mentioning cannibalism:
    http://starbounder.org/Floran
And here's the official wiki without cannibalism (Note how the text is very similar):

Very much so. Honor, vengeance and ninjas. That's what I want to see.

    From official Floran introduction:
Though a unisex race, Floran culture values survival through reproduction and expansion over environmentalism or any perceived bond to Mother Nature. Cannibalism during funeral rituals and wars with rival factions are commonplace, though it remains unclear whether it’s out of conservation or simple tradition.

EDIT: So I got the ninja I so much wanted... lul

Ok.... haven't gone that far in unstable yet to see that. And guess missed that in the introduction part. Thank you. :)

No wonder my character got away from all that....

That's just the thing. The official Floran Introduction no longer mentions cannibalism (At least the wiki doesn't).

that video is a nice one, although doesn't really imply cannibalism to me, just carnivorous (meat-eater). Since Floran are plants, to be cannibals they would have to eat themselves....>< Well their kind, and that would be vegy or salads?! *confused* Oh well that is the universe for you. lol

I guess the term cannibal mainly comes from the outside look in, while to a floran it is just food they eat. All about perspective. Anyway that is a nice video. :)

I picked my stuff from Starbounder.org, which is the official wiki. I personally don't trust the other ones. I once couldn't stop myself rewriting the hylotl and apex lore pages at one wiki since half of the content was pure fanfiction and speculation.

Also the original source where the intro is from: http://playstarbound.com/meet-the-florans/
Cannibalism hasn't been removed from it.

The intro is from 2012. This may not be the final version. Starbounder is the official wiki, true, but it's still maintained by the community. I don't know if it undergoes revision by the actual writers.
    @Katzeus can clarify that issue.
    -edit-
Aaaaaaaaand, as expected, I am not surprised...
