Go onto playedgeofspace.com, look under devblogs for "That dirty word called Clone." Personally, as someone who is more in favor of showing instead of telling, this is not something that really inspires confidence in me.

And yes, I am familiar with that sensation you describe Phyrex. It is the same reason why I am still extremely critical of Star Quest Online and the reason why some folks hate My Little Pony. It's not necessarily the game/show itself, it's the people who follow it.

i was expecting something worst when you said "butthurt" but i can see an underlying "defensive" tone. or am i missing something else ?

Eh, perhaps. But at the same time, why feel the need to write a lengthy response to criticism at all? Shouldn't the proof be in the finished product?

I had a look at Edge of Space, and from what I see, it looks good, sounds good, and I'll probably buy it, but I found no reason to say that it's a Starbound "clone", because it would be, let's say, calling Red Orchestra a CoD clone.

    Lady,
I like your approach, calling this a new genre is a very apt description. (in fact TotalBiscuit did the same thing in a recent Mailbag) Crea is another example of this genre getting further fleshed out. Sidescrolling, Adventure, RPG, Building - we should approach these games as competitors, not as enemies. And when the gaming development community competes we (the consumers) will get awesome-er games and will see the genres we love strengthened.

I saw that Mailbag just the other day, someone linked me to it. I couldn't agree more with TB than when he talked about the need for more games in this genre. It's what people want, they're asking for it. All you really have to do is look at how upset people got when development stopped on Terraria. They didn't feel satisfied, because it's a great game and they want more OF it. The fans felt like they lost that chance. Now, with Starbound, Edge of Space, Crea, and others coming along, it fills that void. The more, the merrier I say! :)

Comparing or not, Edge of Space is incredibly bad on its own.

I agree, nothing about what I've seen of Edge of Space is impressive.

Edge of Space looks mediocre. It doesn't look bad, but compare with Starbound, which consistently shows me things that are blast your pants off awesome, such as the wide range of character customization, the sheer variety in everything, the fact that I could probably run it off of a toaster due to it's impressive optimization, and the in-depth combat system.

    Hi there,

There seems to be a lot of negativity in this thread. Please keep criticism constructive. FWIW, there are members of the Starbound community who happen to be Edge of Space fans. Disagreeing is OK. Not liking it is OK. But please be respectful and informative.

(Plus, if the EoS community were criticizing Starbound, then I know I'd like to know specifics so I could fix them.)

Honestly I believe Terraria, Starbound, and Edge of Space are all very similar. When I tell people about Starbound, I say futuristic Terraria, because that's what it is like. All these comparisons are not because people think they are the same, but because they are alike. I mean, when I say that Starbound is futuristic Terria, I don't literally mean they are the same game, it's just the graphics make them look similar, and that's basically all we know about Starbound at this point. And yes, I realize they have incredibly different gameplay, but that doesn't make them not similar.
Edge of Space is pretty much a cross between Starbound and Metroid... Well, other than the fact that it has terrible graphics, I can't find any information on it anywhere (except the kickoff), and I don't even think they have a website... Yeah, personally I don't like Edge of Space. When I first saw HERO talking about it, I thought it would be good, but was dissapointed.

But anyways, why are you bothering to explain how they are different, when we know they are different? It is useless to tell us what we already know... And what we know is that the games are different, but also the same. You have to realize that there are lines of misunderstanding when people use words like "the same" or "like," because in order to lengthen a description, comparisons must be made. Example: A green apple is the same thing as a red apple. Technically they aren't, because they look different, but at the same time, they are the same thing. Do you see what I mean? People don't actually literally believe these games are all copies, they just use it as a comparison.

What I love about the forums is how we instantaneously jump to conclusions.
We know virtually nothing of what us coming for is in Starbound, I don't think we can make any real comparisons until the game is up and running and full blown.

I have been in a couple of threads that mentioned this game, and from what I have read (I may of missed the specific thread you are talking about) it has seemed a lot of people who "Don't like EOS" had quite a few different reasons then just bitterness. Some don't trust what they have seen (Because of some dude.. I forgot his name, but I am sure some of those same people are in this thread know who I mean), some don't like it because of its artwork, and etc. I don't look at this as "Hating" on the game, they just don't like it. Ya can't blame someone for not liking something based off reasons. I don't like grapes, because they taste bad. That isn't bitterness, that is just taste.

True some people will get rather defensive of Starbound.. I don't disagree with that, but that is also a very small percentage of people out of the small percentage that are even talking about EOS. You know "Haters gota Hate" lol... It happens. But as a whole a lot of people have some "Good" reasons to dislike EOS, and I am sure if they thought people would talk to them other then try to get on them about "Bashing the game" they would be more then happy to explain it.

Just because a game fits the "theme" that you like doesn't mean it is a good game. If a game is bad it should be called out for what it is for whatever reason. I am not saying I agree with them, but if the topic comes up, and they have an opinion on why the game might be bad they should let people know so they can check it out, and maybe prevent people from buying something they will regret.

I severely doubt anyone here really thinks EOS is a threat to Starbound. If they do then they have passed the point of logic, and really don't have a leg to stand on. I have heard "Rip-Off" (which I don't think it is) but never threat...

This is a game market, and if you look at the differences like ya have you will see that Starbound (At least from the stuff we have heard..) is a few steps ahead of the game. I don't think that is "Bashing" on EOS just stating an oppion that from what I have seen, I have a stronger belief that Starbound will be the preferred game to me.

I get your point of.. "Hey guys lets not be hateful to this other game", but people have reasons they don't like things. Sometimes it is a rational reason, sometimes not. I also get it is sometimes difficult for an indie developer to come up, and then get hit down for some reason they had no idea about. I am just saying I am not going to encourage others to go against what they think and say its good, or I am going to get on them about it.

By them expressing these reasons into a conversation others that see this can see this, and make up their own mind about it. If people just sit around and glad-hand each other about how great of a game it is going to be, then whats the point? I mean we should just change it to Starbound/EOS Forums since we are just doing the good PR for them. If they mess up they should be held accountable like anyone else, and just because the similarities of Starbound (or this "type of game") should not be a reason to ignore these.

Last.. Personally what I think about EOS is that it is too soon to decide. I don't know how it is going to play out so I can't say if it is going to be a good game or not. Personally I don't like the art work, but as in game play I do not know enough to make an opinion. To be completely honest I will prob be playing Starbound (When it is released) too much to really check it out, unless I see a lot more better things about it.

    Edit:
I think someone has to reach the point where we just go.. who cares what they are saying. Let them rant... let them rave. In the end of the day there are those who are not going to give Starbound a shot because of one reason or another. What someone says on a forum (That one or this one) isn't going to be important enough to mess up the "Big Picture" of a good game.

I get that too. When I tell someone I prefer one game over the other they either take it as hating everything else or they tell me to shut up. And when either happens all I can do is

The only thread even remotely related to Starbound on the EoS forums, is the Starbound discussion thread. It's the Starbound fans from the EoS community asking questions about the game. I've not heard a single negative word about it breathed from that direction, and I've made it a point to answer those questions for them. :)

The great thing about Starbound and Edge of Space is that they both take two key aspects of Terraria and improve on them, as you pointed out Edge of Space is more about fixing a world while fighting off monsters. A bit like Terraria hard mode? Starbound is more based on exploration and gathering resources. I feel like that is more like pre hard mode in Terraria.

Except that Edge of Space doesn't even have half the content that Terraria has.

I know EoS is still not released, but nothing i've seen of that game impresses me so far.
And i'm finding it quite weird that you guys compare it to Terraria or even Starbound.

Check this out: twitch.tv/edgeofspace , I couldn't watch too much of it because I'm kinda busy right now, but it looks prety good
