Star Trek Race Equivalents

I've noticed some similarities between the races in Starbound and some of the Star Trek races. Note that most of these are referring to the races personalities, not physical characteristics.

    • Human: This one's kinda obvious. Human!
    • Avian: Their spiritual devotion and slightly aggressive tendencies bring the Bajorans to mind.
    • Hylotl: Probably most like Vulcans with their peaceful mindset. But the Hylotl tend to be rather arrogant, while the Vulcans, from what I've seen, are only slightly so on occasion.
    • Apex: The Apex remind me heavily of the Borg, the way "each Apex dedicates his life to the survival and progression of the Apex as a whole."
    • Floran: The Floransss remind me very much of the Hirogen, with they way they ssseek hunting and killing othersss.
    • Glitch: Puzzled: At this time, I am unable to think of a close match.
    • Novakid: Not completely sure here, mainly due to lack of material on them, but my first instinct says Pakled from the TNG episode "Samaritan Snare"
So... Any fellow Trekkies (or non-Trekkies) here with some thoughts?

I'd say vulcans are plenty arrogant just through their very nature, not purposefully so. Apex are definitely not the borg, since what defines the borg is the whole assimilation thing. Good call on the Florans, though I wouldn't say they're quite as aggressive. Apex, I'd say, are like many of the pre-warp civilizations in Star Trek, because Star Trek tends to over simplify them a whole lot and make them a lot less complex than they otherwise would be. Glitch perhaps also.

The non-self-aware Glitch are a hive-mind. That automatically makes them a Borg-alike. That also means that there should be a female Glitch somewhere that looks like Jeri Ryan.

Also, I'd equate the Apex with Romulans. An advanced race, but violent and authoritarian in their attitudes. Also, very slightly less advanced than the Hylotl/Vulcans.

Florans are unashamed of their violence, like Klingons.

Yes, I didn't think of Romulans, that's a very nice match actually. I don't know about Florans though, they're friendly and inquisitive but violent, it's a very odd mix.

Yes, Florans are almost Trek-Human in that regard.

So, Humans are... Binars? Weren't they adrift in space after their home planet was destroyed?

Funnily enough I was going to say the same thing about Florans. I can't say about the Bynars, I haven't seen that episode (more of a Voyager fan.)

With a series as long going and over-arching as Star Trek, anything Spacerace related is bound to draw comparisons too it.
It's not really any fault of Starbound's. Star Trek just did most Space ideas first.

I don't think they were implying that Starbound copied Star Trek, just that races had similarities and it'd be interesting to see which matched up the most. As we've already seen, it isn't what you might imagine, with Florans being more like humans than humans are.

I may have made a wrong assumption off of the OP. I didn't mean to imply you were calling Starbound out on unoriginality or anything.

Correct; it was not my intention to say Starbound is unoriginal. It's just that being a Trekkie, I see trek in a lot of things, whether it's really there or not. Especially sci-fi.

...Though I did find a shirt in-game (of which the wiki says there's a matching set of pants that I've not found yet) that is very clearly a homage to Star Trek, but homages are different.
