STAR, not Earth, Bound

Starbound is intended to be a sci-fi game, right? It might be a Star Western, Space Opera, Knights in SPAAAAACE, or a Bug Hunt, but its science fiction all the same.

So why in the Sam Hill am I burrowing through to the very core of a planet in search of precious ore and fuel? While I am enjoying the beta thus far, I feel that far too much of my time is spent in imitation of a prairie dog instead of actually, you know, being Starbound.

Instead of mining for resources as in at least four other games I can name off the top of my head
    Inifiniminer, Dwarf Fortress, Minecraft, Terraria
why can't I find what I need primarily through trade and exploration? Mining should be an option and possibly even the best way to acquire mass materials for construction, but there should be other options that are viable.

tl;dr Why do I have to be a coal miner when I'd rather be a cowboy?

Because its a beta and isn't feature complete. Feel free to make suggestions though, the devs might take notice if they havent already planned things.

Why don't you try making a suggestion to the dev team?

You could be a cowboy. Just cut down enough trees for some fuel, then fly around the system until you find a defenseless village to raid.

Well the story behind it is that you left your planet and basically crash landed. having to start over essentially, you need to get those ores and dig to get material, maybe later on they will implement some sort of space trading and things you are looking for, but the game has been out for less than a week.

I honestly I believe its because if you were bound to a star would be the less pleasant of the two.

because its not that kind of game. It may evolve into that, but right now its pretty much Terraria in Space.

This sentence is a contradiction. The software development definition of a beta IS feature complete.

Are we really going to argue semantics when the word "Beta" has been taken out of context so many times when applied to videogames that it doesn't even matter any more? I've seen betas really be alphas or really be demos. Just roll with it because few are going to use it correctly in the gaming industry.

Earthbound is one of the most coolest rpg ever made on this planet , period. No need to bash the name like this dude ... ;-;. i ask you to change your thread name right now or i'll call mr. Saturn himself to kick your ass to outer space.

Nope, AAA companies do it too with closed betas.

I think it should really move towards emphasizing the space and exploration motifs- while Terraria is a fine game, I get more than enough digging there.

Yer a plum fool, ya know that, mister? No self-respectin' cowboy would ever raid a defenseless village. 'cept if it had some dirty injuns or some such.

Even taking that suggestion, the randomization means that I seem to find very little ore in villages. There's never a merchant there selling valuable ores/bars for an (exorbitant) price. It's always crappy weapons and blueprints I already seem to have.

Ew, gross. I guess I'm lucky that none of the AAA companies that I've tested for do it.

Earthbound is less of a game, more of an experience. Which, in and of itself, is not a bad thing, but I don't think games should really aspire to be experiences over, well, games.

i agree, i would like there to be other ways to get ores and stuff, even if they are not as effective as actually mining... maybe after they fix this pixel storage thing we could get this done... lol

i agree with you, but it would need A LOT more content to be a deep space exploration game. I do hope the game becomes deep in that way, but i'm not holding my breath. Im fine with that though, it is what it is.

I will give $100 to the first person to hunt down the judges of this year's VGX Awards and scream this in their faces.
