I'm not sure if something like this is already in Starbound but I wanted to put the idea out there. Seeing the lighting and shadows being demonstrated in Starbound, I started pondering about directional lighting that a player would be able to place for decorative and functional purposes. Spotlights are used frequently in the real world for decorative and functional uses, whether it's for casting light onto a tree in the garden or lighting a driveway for example. Spotlights would be a direct light source that the player can rotate to face different directions, which can illuminate a hallway or direct attention to a focal point such as a displayed decorative item. I know that lighting in Starbound doesn't quite look like this, it's just a quick concept. Lighting has a big say in atmosphere and theme, it can change the mood easily! Directed lighting could be used to set many themes such as Science Lab, Discoteca, Industrial, Spooky, etc. The Directed lighting effect could also be applied to things like Hanging lamp bells that may sway in the wind as they hang on their cable from the ceiling, which could be useful for an industrial theme!
In all the pictures I've seen, I think avian temples could use this. Maybe you could attach a spotlight to an alarm if you wanted to. Spotting players or "monsters."
I wouldn't be surprised if this was already in the game. There are directional lights you can hold(flashlight).
I am always a fan of varied lighting blocks with different colors. It really adds alot of ambiance to certain rooms.
I'd like lights that can be programmed to move, and are capable of detecting enemies and sound an alarm. Perhaps by adding a detection system to it which in turn is connected to the control room.
