I'm sure all of you remember the range of awesome Visors in Metroid games, which allowed us to see all sorts of hidden things! Some of them included: X-Ray Visor (Seeing through walls, finding hidden weak spots & traps!) Thermal Visor (Abnormal heat signatures, invisible enemies) Echo Visor (Spots sound anomalies) Dark Visor (See inter-dimensional objects) So with these examples, here's some ways similar vision modes could be used in Starbound: X-Ray In Super Metroid this was used to find secret paths and traps! Imagine if it could help finding secret treasures, hidden paths or well camouflaged traps (mines, etc)? Also it could help to point out weak spots in bosses, which could be randomly assigned each time! Nightvision Could allow us to see better in dark areas, which would make cave-delving so much easier! Darkvision Here is where things become interesting... imagine if an otherwise peaceful planet is actually dwelled by foul monsters with the ability to camouflage/switch dimensions? Invisible just until they strike, those monsters could be quite a pain. Unless of course, you come equipped with the ability to see them!
It would all so be nice to have some sort of Electromagnetic visor to see machines, Wiring, and other creatures that don't seem to release heat.
Like Master Geass said, only one equipped each time and it would be nice, having to switch between them for different tasks!
Having functional visors would always be fun, of course the resources needed to use them should be on the planet that has them, so that at least you have a chance to fight back.
Metroid oh memories... : On Topic : Maybe a mining/Star helmet? That would work pretty epical! ~ Thank You! John Devince
Although I can't imagine this usually being helpful, if there was a unique quest where you needed to traverse a secretly dangerous planet by turning these on and off, that'd be cool.
Don't think unseeable traps would be nice, unless they're just small, and being able to see through walls is already in the game isn't it? Mostly because it is a 2D sandbox game... Invisible enemies would just be plain cheap, even if they do appear after striking, its overwhelming to have to get equipment just to be able to see it, I think night vision kinda makes enemies appearing suddenly underwhelming, making combating enemies in the dark not as challenging or memorable, echo visor, in my opinion, ruins the whole "you hear a gun shot but you don't know where it came from, be careful."
But if these items weren't easy to obtain, and the consequence of not having them wasn't severe, I think it would be extremely rewarding to be able avoid the 10% health loss from unwittingly stumbling upon a camouflaged enemy (burrowers?) because you found a heat-sensitive visor in a dungeon, or not have one of your hand slots taken up in the dark with a flashlight because at some point along your adventure you found rare night vision goggles. I think this would be fun as F**K!
They should be rare and hard to get, I also feel like it would be more rewarding if you had to go through more to get each one, like a short on planet quest or something, different for each one. Increased vision would be awesome late game, perhaps the only problem I had with Terraria was that a lot of the time 80% of the screen was blacked out underground unless you got to lava, night vision would make it feel like more of a cave as opposed to a dark void without 5 mins of spamming lights everywhere. The flashlight also does a good job of fixing that but late game lighting is a definite want.
Hmm...Maybe it will be ingame who knows. I like idea very much but something is missing. And hell i can't remeber what is missing.
Perhaps there should be different qualities, like easier to find low quality visors that only work for a short while or break easily, while the rarer and higher quality visors last awhile, employ more extended use, and most likely work better. This would allow more people to have them but lucky ones could find enhanced versions which would be more rewarding.
I had the exact same reaction. This would be a very interesting concept for Starbound, and the usefulness of it could be extremely high. Especially after the release of the Apex lab screenshot, which appeared to be littered with traps. I like it!
