Aright, so first of all, you know how in terraria weapons could have a special stat on them? I started thinking... What if you could have a random stat on CREATURES? Every once in a while you could have one that was stronger in a way, or had a special abillity. You could have a group of poptops, for example, and most of them are normal, but there could be a Crafty poptop. The crafty poptop has increaced speed, and will fake attacks to confuse you. Or you could have the Kleptomaniacal poptop, who likes to stash treasure in it's mouth. This can go on, and apply to all creatures. Here are just some examples. Fire-breathing, Hyper, Lonely, Old, Injured, Sickly, Overgrown, and Ruthless. Alternitivly, why not have mini-bosses? They can be randomly generated, and have special attacks and names. You know what I mean if you've ever played an MMO. Those big, nasty, quest/misson related brutes that summon some mobs or have chain lightning of death. Ones that require a simple stratagy. They could also spawn in mini-dungeons, not nearly as big as the dungeon in terraria, about 1/4 the size, at the very most, and they could drop rarer items, similar to mimics worked in terraria. (I'm making refrences to terraria, as I assume a vast majority will have played it and thus understand this thread better.)
Something like this could make traveling planets more interesting. I personally like to level up before fighting bosses, and having a randomly stronger monster pop up while I'm grinding levels is nice, especially if they drop more experience than their normal counterparts.
I'd love to see random stronger versions of creatures generated (I'm imagining wow silver/gold portrait style), it would add just that little bit extra variety into the mix They'd have to have some way to easily distinguish them from their normal versions though which may be a problem seeing as there'll be such a huge variety with the procedural generation as it is. I'm sure they could think of some way to overcome this though. I also like the idea of the mini-bosses, although not too many, sort of like the king slime in Terraria. They just show up from time to time and are effectively larger and even more difficult versions of the special monsters. I think completely randomly generated areas of the map should stick to being for main bosses, although the distinction between the two would be a very blurred line anyway. I mainly mean that I wouldn't want to see too many random mini boss generated areas popping up all over my planet. Nice idea though, and hopefully this will be including something like this anyway seeing as they have the procedural generation system in place.
(Quote from the list of announced features) I think that they've already decided there will be procedurally generated enemies. The more varied they look (one might have blue skin instead of green) the better the drops. I imagine it to be like Diablo - you'll often find a group of monsters with a special one which is a harder to defeat.
I'd love to see specailized creatures in Terraria most flying enemies had the attachment 'big' or 'small', such as: big eater or souls. And I like that idea, but it only had big and small so yes this is good and I hope a dev or someone sees this. The mini-dungeons I'm kinda uneasy on but everything else is great.
