I think that there should be a small hatch in your spaceship and you can climb out of it and float around in space you also can find rare rocks or asteroid and you have certain tools and things that make you able to harvest some of this rock/ore

You would have to have some special armour or helmet to make you able to breathe in space or you would suffocate but you can not get lost because there is a kind a rope thing attached to your suit

A type a rocket/jet-pack attached to your suit to pre pell yourself around space but you need fuel to power it you would also be able to upgrade and personalize your outfit/uniform

You can also find other type of npc's and enemys you can also board other peoples ships and raid them e.t.c

There is a hatch and a space suit, but I don't think there is anything outside the ship like ore or NPCs, so you might consider editing your original suggestion to be having stuff in space around your ship like ore/blocks and monsters.

 

The asteroids are kind of like this.

 

In the case of having ores and stuff outside your ship I think it would be a cool addition to be able to make a spacestation or a small base on an astroid or something
