(I was not sure where to place this so I put it in Mechanics. If this is not the right place then please move it ^^) Space. It is really really big. So naturally when you're traveling from planet to planet in the vast vacuum of the cosmos you'll get the feeling of emptiness and solitude in the endless frontier. Except, it's not empty. What if between visits to planets you come across a random encounter. Perhaps you drift too close to an asteroid belt and you need to blast your way through or maybe collect some of the large space rocks. Perhaps you are attacked by Space Pirates; hostile alien beings or renegades from your home planet. It could be a simple encounter, such as another ship full of aliens asking for directions or a certain item, or you run across that intergalactic burger joint that the last batch of aliens said make the best darn Quasar Burgers this side of the nebula! But of course, space is a big place full of big beings. What if a giant space-faring creature the size of your entire starship suddenly appears and you need to fight it off, possibly with lasers or with your starship having the ability to transform into a massive mecha to fight it on equal ground (which ties into another suggestion I had made: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/transforming-vehicle-mechs.2702/#post-42675 ) And who is to say all of the giant creatures floating through the galaxy are coincidentally as big as your starship? There;s a good chance that there are things even bigger out there... (Elaborated on in another suggestion thread: http://community.playstarbound.com/...-cosmic-leviathan-enter-the-space-whale.2705/ ) Many people have already suggested finding derelict and abandoned ships floating about that you could investigate, perhaps completely empty aside from some skeletons and some criptic log entries of the crew's last moments. Or, maybe whatever took care of the crew is still aboard, waiting for someone foolish enough to investigate to step foot into its new hunting grounds. That all fits in here too. That's all I can think of for now involving random space encounters. I hope everyone likes what I've brought to the table, and again, if this is in the wrong place please move it
in this thread http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/space-battles.1804/, I state I'd really like to see random encounters happen while investigating planets, it would help so much in breaking reiteration and monotony in late games. I however believe it should be rarer than final fantasy encounters, this way it'll be even more effective at doing what I just said.
no it's all good, if enough emphasis on stuff we want is in enough threads being talked about by more and more people, the more likely it'll be put in. From what it sounds like though, the creation of a planet (in the light of "finding a new planet to explore") is just inputting a few numbers acting like coordinates. Think Minecraft's "Seed" generation. I can see a lot of potential in between loading and generating the new planet. There has to be SOMETHING to fill in the void every once in a while.
Hehe I also had my own suggestion on this line: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/space-encounters-a-mechanic.1340/#post-23186 So basically a lot of people would like to see a space encounters type mechanic put in the game
Exactly, just enough to beat out repetitive gameplay, but less so to where the encounters themselves don't get over played.
