I love! this idea (The Ghost Ship) by Zolon but would make it a game feature/mechanic and expand it to random encounters on your way to planets like this: Derelict ships Ships that have been abandoned to scary random space-creatures (capture-able) but you first have to kill the hive mother! Ships that have been quarantined due to virus outbreak, you have to find a few samples (while fighting scary deranged crew) then create a cure within a set time or else... Ancient ships Old ship of races gone buy, you can fight trough it to find new tech. or help npc's (researchers or scavengers) stuck/trapped on them. Its a trap... a ship built as a trap to other sentient races to test their ability to reason and/or fight. Think Indiana Jones and the Ship of Doom! These adventures can be done also on space stations that can be randomly found orbiting astronautical objects. Ships and stations can be randomly generated using 'rooms' that have connection information so they can be stitched together when loading new area/encounters. Even the content can be random as you can just define place holders for a predefined range (common->rare or bland->dangerous) of place holders. More cool ideas, thanks to pUREsTORM: Random Boarding or On-Ship Events that can happen on-route to a destination: Boarding Action by Pirates: Beat them off and if they do not retreat you can try and take over their ship. Rewards: Their ship? bit much, maybe the 'Space Authorities' can give a reward. Random pirate tech. Captured NPC can spawn it's own quest line, probably an escort mission. Boarding Action by Unknown Aliens: Same as Pirates but more freaky and scary. Rewards: same as Pirates also cool alien tech and pets DNA for research and alien tech/materials. Boarding Action by Space Aliens: No ship, they board via drilling holes, short-hop transportation or infiltration via attaching to EVA crew members. Rewards: Trainable space aliens, DNA used for research and alien materials. Outbreak of Alien Plant/Pest: Just a dangerous weird spore/egg that you picked up by accident on some remote space-port or planet that start growing or breading very fast. Clean and purge. Reward: Alien materials. Outbreak of Deadly Virus: Rush to research a cure that can be sold afterward. Outbreak of 'Zomby' Virus: Changes crew members to slow moving crazy zombies, you can kill them but then you lose them, you can ignore them but they impede movement and have a chance of infecting other crew members, you have to research a cure to heal them. Also, maybe instead of a GHOST SHIP (though I like the idea) there would be a rift in space where you could go to a parallel universe...that would me that even though the planets are GENERALLY the same, people and enemies and items might be TOTALLY different? thoughts?

As an additional possible encounter, maybe your ship could be boarded by raiders. You have to defend your ship against the invaders, and hopefully be able to push them back into their own ship. You could then invade their ship, kill more raiders for the experience and gain some loot.
I mentioned in soem topic about space combat and encounters, i approve it, it's always fun to have random "meetings" with other things like abandoned ships, spacestations or smth like that, when You'll be able to bear it and find some rare blueproints or species of animals, aliens whatever would be awesome.
That what I love about random encounters like I described, you never know what you'll find. The suspense, discovery and adventure of exploring weird alien/ancient/abandoned ships and stations and receiving as reward blueprints, trainable aliens/animals, npc and materials, as you mention, would drive me to HOURS of play time, that's one of the reasons I live Skyrim so much.
yes, and imagine exploring it like this in multiplayer with friends, also there should be something like "monsters multiplier" atleast to increase difficulty of gamewhen more players are in.
Well you will probably be able to take a boarding party with you and you'll have to select them before you board so you'll have the right skills with you. And doing this in a co-op fashion would be epic.

Quarantined ship would be awesome. Also would be good if your ship was to get Infected and you would have to find the 1 infected NPC quick enough
Hehe, that could be fun, trying to find an NPC that is actively trying to hide while still trying to research a cure. Hide and seek or a type of treasure hunt... which gives me another idea.
I cant wait to see how this will turn out. A mind controlling alien making thralls out of your crew would be cool.
You might amend this to the older thread, I can see the stuff you got here working hand in hand with the other thread. as we wouldn't need 2 right beside eachother. edit: though I guess it won't matter, the more threads we have on a subject we really want might make it more noticeable to the Devs.
Well, it is a game about space, so it's no surprise that space encounters are a popular idea. I'd want to go to more than just planets myself, having space battles, pirates/aliens boarding my ship or encountering a derelict ship. But if not, oh well, I could probably handle it. Ships shouldn't necessarily have to have hostile alien lifeforms on board, could've just been severely damaged in an attack or even raided by pirates, and is primarily a place to scavenge with hull breaches and other hazards.
Hehe, true, and we should keep the ideas going so we can keep the thread active. True, some passive exploration/scavenging space encounters would be great.
Well there can be 4 different types of encounters. Derelict ship/ hulk - could be pretty fun to go into large stations or ships that either have also been abandoned, or just blown to pieces. There could be scary hints as to what had happened, and maybe the reason of the dereliction could still be nearby or within the hull of the hulks. I'd love to also just run into bandits or even other scavengers either willing to share the loot or try to kill you for it. Docile/ friendly ships/ stations - other stations orbiting friendly planets and ships hauling merchandise from one planet to others, some willing to sell on the spot, or even provide tactical assistance on the planet below. Maybe the orbiting stations need help colonizing, or maybe even terraforming the planet below for some extra pixels. Neutral Ships/ stations - Every once in a while you'll run into ships and stations that don't know you, but are willing to trade and make relations with you and yours. Perhaps you'd like to attack, and take their stuff for your own. Hostile Ships/ stations - Aliens who are blockading an allied planet, or even just noticing you as an enemy decides to attack. Stations will most likely kill you on the spot, but you can go in cloaked or something and destroy them from the inside. Anyone like these ideas?
