Okie Dokie. since i have heard Jack Monkey Squat about what space will be like, and since i like space combat, I present this idea for SPACE COMBAT! Top down real time shooter style, ala Time Pilot 84/Robotron 2084. incase you youngins never heard of these... Time Pilot 84 Robotron 2084 add in the mechanics Health bar, Weapon Charge Bar and Shield Bar and your Crew adding various different upgrades to your ship (ie Mechanic regens Shields and health faster, Fire Controll Officer makes the weapons drain less Weapon Charge and regen the Weapon Charge Bar faster, Navigator makes the ship faster/more maneuverable ect). this way you can fly between planets and actually have a reason for a ship, instead of shuttling everywhere (wich is all you would really need with just a Nav Map Space). Whatchu' Think?
I think that would be a good idea! Also, there could be a few bosses which are giant, and can only be taken down on tour ship/station. Like in Bowsers Inside Story, where Boswer can turn into a massive version of himself, to battle giant bosses. The last boss, the thing that destroyed your homeworld, could be fought like this.
OH! Thought, the Second. since Space is pretty wicked big. Why not Hybrid the Star Map Nav idea (ie you open your star map and click on your destination and hit the Travel button) with this style of Combat being a sort of Random Encounter mechanic? You know. As in sometimes you Hit the Travel button and you get an Encounter, and it shifts to this mode, so you can deal with the Encounter, and after the Encounter you continue your journey (assuming you're successful). If you are unsuccessful you could be Boarded (ie By Pirates and then it goes to inside ship combat) or if not pirates, you appear back on the Planet and have to get the stuff to fix the ship and try again. I would prefer a Zero Death space combat, but having to repair the ship would be a really fair and solid Penalty for losing (How many times did we see Han and Chewy fixing the Falcon in the Star Wars movies?). Longer Journeys might yield more Encounters, while short Journeys might not have any except on Rare occasion. This, I feel, would also promote more stops at other systems along the way. If you're Traveling with friends in Multiplayer, when an encounter happens you each have your own ship. Have a Bunch of Friends traveling together and you can pull the Safety in Numbers aspect Space Bosses could also be fit into this Random Encounter system. But let's try not to have it be the Final Fantasy style " every five steps a monster jumps on your party" idea.. because then it would get old real quick and a lot of people would likely hate it.
Perhaps we could step this one step further and sectors each with their own safety rating where 1.0 sec is highly secure and dangerous encounters are rare and 0.0 sec where pirates travel frequently preying upon unsuspecting ships. Though this would mean that there would have to be a general over ruling power in the area, but it could still work. The advantage of traveling through low is sec can be for the encounters themselves or to try cut off some time. After an encounter is over you would be in a specific part of your map and could continue on your destination. Players could force encounters with other players by setting up some sort of blockade (some sort of warp scrambling field) and anyone unlucky enough as to get caught there would be forced to fight or try to flee. Back to the high sec, if someone tries to set-up a blockade in high sec or start a fight with someone there, some powerful authorities would arrive after some time (it would depend on the level of high sec, the higher the faster) and would intervene potentially destroying all who are engaging in the fight.
I'm fairly sure I posted a thread similar to this awhile back called space battles... But anyway I support because it involves fighting in space which means I can do a barrel roll!
Sorry yo! Must have missearched lol! I would like to elaborate by saying that having the controls be like Robotron (8way move ans seperate 8way fire, or perhaps 8way move mouse aim. Ala gun turret) with the visual top down of Time Pilot. Geometry Wars is another great control example.
Sorry if my SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE wasn't clear enough, but I would love if the Star Bound Space combat was like Geometry Wars, or Time Pilot!
Anything that involves fighting in space and piloting your own ship, sign me up for. Out of my group of friends I've already declared I am and always will be the pilot of our group if given the chance. If we do get space combat and battles though, I'd also hope this means there'd be a great deal of ship customization aside from the whole crew members increasing stats idea.
Oh i'm certain that if the Dev Team chose to implement this type of combat, that customization of ships would be far more favorabe to the more conventional "Power Pick Up" of Arcade shooter with similar controls.
So i just read the Interview with Tiy at http://www.indiegamemag.com/dont-ge...uins-tiy-talks-upcoming-space-epic-starbound/ No space Combat at release.. BUT THERE's STILL HOPE for an after-release update!
The end of Summer? Thats 5 months away. or around Christmas thats a little further. but it really depends on how fast everything else falls into place. How many artists do they have working on this?
I think they should just include this in an update. You don't need an entirely new game to pay for to add this suggestion.
If you want to do it right, you need to. Adding space combat is like adding a completely new game. I don't think you can fit it in just a patch.
