Sooo, Mechs...

    Cyoral Yeah, You!

Greetings, all. New player here (well not new exactly, I've been playing on and off for about a month.)

I just got my first tech, finally, after exploring a planet it delta sector. It just so happens that said tech is a human mech. Great, since I am one. I popped it in and locked it, pressed F and... a couple things:

First: I had a pretty huge lag spike. My comp isn't top line material, but it CAN run games like Guild Wars 2 on lower settings. I have a fair amount of RAM and a "decent" processor (2x2.9GHz) so I am fairly confident that I should be able to handle it without much of an issue. I know we're still in beta; I just wanted to make sure it isn't just me. (NOTE: After about 5 to 10 seconds the lag cleared up, but sound was still distorted until I unsummoned it)

Second: How practical are these things? After my lag cleared up I went around and shot a few monsters before my energy ran out, but it seems to me that damage is comparable to my current melee/ plasma shotgun combo. Then there's the big downside, as well: You're slow and an easy target. I got in a fight with a couple delta level mobs and by the end was below half hp. Something like that never would have happened had I just been sword and boarding it. I can see them being useful on bosses, assuming you can stay out of range, but not so sure because I haven't tested. What are you guys' thoughts? Have you had great success using mechs? AM I just using them wrong?

Thanks in advance, folks. Have fun!

yeah, mechs aren't really balanced in the game.
    at all.

useful at lower tiers and fun to run around in but besides that, you're just wasting time lol.

Yep, mechs are very wip at the moment. I suspect they won't be techs forever though, and will be craftable or something like that.

    Agree with previous comments.

I got a human mech and played with it for 30 seconds and didn't touch it again. It's fun to play with for a minute maybe but pretty useless.

It's fun being in a machine with peashooters and armour that gets penetrated by a wooden spike for a couple minutes.

I suggest the XS corporation mod for your Mech fix

That lag spike you get using the mech happens to nearly everyone. When it happens to me, I stall for like 20 seconds while the sound chugs on a pretty decent computer. (i5 3570K, GTX 670)

Yeah, once you get to Beta sector, mech's suck.

Well thanks for the replies all; glad I'm not the only one. I think I'll hold off on modding until the vanilla is out. Not comfortable messing around with code in beta; nor messing around with mods period when it comes to games downloaded on steam...

It's not that hard you just drop the folder in the mod folder and you're done. But it's your choice

I think mechs will really come into their own once X sector is PvP.

Yeah, I'm really excited for that, imagine a squad of human mech's being stormed by Floran players.

To be fair, wooden spikes kill everything in the game in a single hit, so they're pretty strong. =P
