I understand you :) I get nostalgia for reliving memories too. But I also think it is visual for me (but not you). When I see Starbound I think of Super Mario World, Yoshi Island or Super Metroid. But only how I imagine the games. I played Yoshi Island and Super Metroid again and they do not look good compared to how I remember them. Nostalgia is not the reason for me playing Starbound though. I think it is very modern! It is a mixture of old and new :)

I will say SNES, thank you!

    :p You are welcome.
The Famicom and Super Famicom are just poorly named in all regions. Whats this one called? "The Nintendo" and that one? "Super Nintendo" So they are both Nintendo? "Yah" That's confusing. I think people ignore pre-names but pay attention to post names.

That's why I like NES and SNES. Just imagine they are words that son't mean anything.

Edit: Is it wrong that I imagine you saying SNES! in a super stereotypical Japanese teenage girl voice and imagining you as you are shown in your avatar and shouting KAWAI to myself.

I am a very sad 25 year old man :(

I am not teenage :p かわいい!

    Nintendo choose strange names.

I remembered the oldest person who plays video games I know is older than 70! She does not play Starbound though!

I am gonna pretend that means. "But to an ignorant American we might as well all sound the same", and go back to my earlier assumption/reality.

Edit: I google translated and was pretty much right. I really need to start learning Japanese again. I really enjoy haw many meanings a single word can have depending on context and how it is said.

I was just watching attack on titan and realized the sub mentions Erin's name even tho the character speaking never says his name. I wonder if that is an error in the sub or a pronoun that implies him?

    Language is fun.

As I type this, my wife is sitting across from me playing guild wars 2 (no more starbound until the next update) and is a seasoned veteran Dwarf Fortress. I think the generation that was raised with video games as a regular part of life is getting older. I am 30 and my wife is 29, and that puts us in the lower middle of the video game generation. I was raised with atari, coleco, intellivision, and C64. I had to go to friends houses to play the 'good stuff', by which I mean 'regular assed nintendo'. I am a regular dude who works in construction and is completely unremarkable, while my wife is definitely a head turner*. Their was a time when you could easily pick a 'gamer' out of the crowd as they had a certain look of ill health, now its a crap shoot. Also, it's more common for women to play video games as parents are less likely to force their girls into societies stupid ideals and let them do what they want to do.

*I am really lucky to have a really hot wife that plays games and is also my best friend... really, really lucky apparently.

Pronouns are used by Japanese people but not like Americans or British. I think the character said "Erin" instead of "you" to Erin. That is normal!

My few friends who are in the same age group as you 29-33 meet that description of ill health or just odd looking or bad smelling

Fixed that for you . Hot is relative. JK

I imagine the difference of your SO being a gamer is no different than them having some other hobby. Especially when you want attention. If my girlfirend wants me and I am absorbed in game good luck to her. Or if she is reading(which is her hobby[she reads like 5 books a week ]) and I want her attention good luck to me. So I imagine for you its the same situation its just the same general activity that distracts you from each other :). My gf is my best friend and Soulmate the longest we have been apart in the 4 years we have been together is maybe 5 days.

Yah, I knew it meant cute/kawaii. I just meant that knowing the definition doesn't change my prior stereotype but enforced it :p. So still imagning you shouting SNES-uuu! all adorable like

The line I was referring to in the sub was two people talking about Erin. But the line in the sub actually said Erin Yeager but the spoken dialog never said his name so I assume the character actually said "he" or "him" and because of context Erin was implied. Which at least in English writing is considered bad. IF the only subject is Erin in this case there is no reason to say Erin each time you just say he or him. So I wonder if the people who subbed it aren't native to English or it was just an editorial error. Which is why I want to learn Japanese again so when I see something like that I can analyze it myself instead of wondering.

Edit: I want to find the exact line now. Its a conversation between Pixis and Smith. I am gonna go look for it now.
Thanks for making me obsess over the point :p

Edit2: I found it! Sadly :( I was mistaken the actual dialog does say his name I must have just not heard it when I first watched it and been more focused reading the sub than listening. However re-watching that conversation demonstrates my point that in English , especially in written form it is bad practice to keep saying the name as it is already established who is being talked about and he/him would be fine. In the conversation in question Pixis says Erin's name every time he talks about him even more than once in a single sentence. In Japanese this my be correct but looking at the sub from an English sealers stand point it kind of drives you nuts that he could have just said he as the subject never changed the entire conversation. So Erin only needed to be mentioned once and could have been pronouns the rest of the time.

I am probably the only person who gets worked up about stuff like this :/

I don't believe that is Japanese. If my google-fu is to be believed tho it means Donkey Balls.

I was alive when commercial video games didn't even exist. Seriously. I was 8 when the 2600 came out and haven't stopped since.

It's interesting, because my father got me (female) and my brothers into gaming. I was born in 1981, so I've seen games evolve quite a lot over the years, haha.

For me, Starbound isn't something I became interested in because the art style brings me nostalgia or anything. I became interested because of what type of game it is.

Also, as others have mentioned before, I don't think there's really anything odd about "older" gamers. It only makes sense that those of us that grew up during the time video games were becoming really popular would still be playing games now.

I'm too selfish and hypocritical to want a gamer girl. I'd be mad if she was always playing games, especially if i want the computer or getting past a part in a game i want to play. When i play games, i like when she hovers or is just around me and not gaming.
I dunno, i just think it would be kind of annoying if my fiance was a gamer. I like how it is right now, she'll watch me and help solve a few puzzles. I'm just happy she likes games enough to NOT get angry when i'm playing something awesome.

Don't forget there was a commercial game platform even before the Atari 2600 (The 2600 came out in 1977 for those of you that didn't know.)

The Magnavox Odyssey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnavox_Odyssey) came out in 1972. Used static cling overlays that stuck to your giant old TV set to lay the framework for the graphics. Had stuff like pong.... that was the first thing my parents bought for themselves, since I was born in '72 and couldn't use the massive controllers....

And as for having to share with a gamer girl wife? That's why everyone in my family has their own computer, since the vast majority of our favorites are PC based. The PS2, Wii and Xbox 360 are communal, and sit unused most of the time.

The thing my family has enjoyed about these games is there is something for everyone.

While my ten year old son may spend most of his time exploring and hunting for the best weapons/loot he can find and "coolest monsters" he can kill, I like to craft and spend alot of time on the wiki seeing what all recipes I can find that use the items we are stacking up. Them you have the woman of the house, who spends most of her time building intricate and detailed houses/bases. It makes it fun when my lady adds "get enough steel block and glass together to finish the tower we're building" along with doing the dishes and taking out the trash on our daily chore list. :)

This game has something for just about everyone and every skill level, which is why I'm sure you see so many "adults" (or grown-ups) flocking to this game.

I for one, recommend it to every family of gamers I know.

COD and the like has it's place in all the age groups. I'm in my 40s and many of the gamers I know of my generation only seem to play AAA FPS titles, it's a bit sad.

My other half and all seven of the children in the house play games from the 3 year old through to the 19 year old. I've seen games grow up (my first games machine was a Binatone pong type thing) and It's nice to see them become a widely accepted medium for story telling, in Starbound's case for telling our own stories.

This is actually pretty comforting to know. When I grow older, I won't have to completely drop gaming from being overwhelmed with responsibilities.
