I am with you when it comes to my structures looking horrible (mine look like a 2 year old's coloring book)
Does anyone know if we can take over existing structures or do the mobs in them respawn?

Believe me. I find lighting mechanics just as important as you do. I saw an interview with the people making 'The Last of Us" and I literally got excited over them having bounce lighting. As in, you shine a flashlight on a red sign and the light is bounced back onto the character as red light.

I love how the flashlight looks in Starbound, specially at night and in the rain since it lights up the rain in the beam but nowhere else. It just looks so awesome.

Bounce lighting sounds awesome...I want bounce lighting in all my games.

 

The frozen ocean/arctic biome looks amazing, especially with the huge glaciers in the background.
