<Sarzael> Tiy: I hope the storyline of Starbound will be great. Have you worked on that already?
<@Tiy> I have some weird ideas I want to experiment with
    <@Tiy> story wise
<Sarzael> Tiy: Cool. What kind of story will it be, i mean in the terms of, relaxed? heavy? intense?
<@Tiy> Sarzael I'm going to experiment with a series format
<@Tiy> where each "episode" has its own tone

That basically means a chapter may be intense, other relaxed, other light, other funny, etc...

  2. I like the idea of an episodic story structure. It would mean game updates can expand on the story as well as the gameplay.

Not sure I like initial sound of that but if done well could be really cool :) See how it plays out.
Could be good with them doing consistent updates on the game as it means they could add in a new story but depends how it roles.

I dont think he meant that.
I think he meant that the Storyline will be full at release.
It will be splitted in various chapters, every chapter having a different tone and maybe starting a new topic.
Like, Chapter 1 may be INTENSE and is topic is DESTRUCTION OF YOUR HOMEWORLD.
Chapter 2 may be HEAVY and is topic is SPACE STATION.

    Kinda like a book.

Sounds like an interesting idea. I can see the chapter format working pretty well with the general storyline as well.

I'm not so sure I'm for the idea of a story at all, at least not one that's injected into your veins. I appreciate stories in videogames much more when they aren't spoon-fed to me, when I'm the one in control of learning whats going on in the world through interactions with npcs, to the artifacts I find and whatever crazy stuff decides to kill me. I don't really feel like Starbound, being a sandbox game, is a place for a linear type of story. Something more open-ended with little in the way of info-dumping? I can get behind that.

If its coming either way, I won't mind it. I just feel like it's a little misplaced.

Well as this is a very open ended game, the story isn't going to be in your face the whole time. You can probably just explore the galaxy to your heart's content and ignore the story if you want to. I'm also curious if a creative mode like Minecraft has will be added to the game.

There will be director mode (They are looking forward that).
Director Mode>OVER 9000 TIMES CREATIVE MODE!

well, I agree that you can ignore the current "quests" given and go explore on your own for the time being, after all, it is a sandbox, right?
    Exactly. Cannot wait for this.

I didn't even think there would be a story, to be honest in sandbox games I prefer not to have one. Putting a goal in one usually means there's an ending to reach, and a place to stop.

It doesn't sound like the story is being forced upon anyone. It's still very much a sandbox game.
I like the idea of there being some sort of story, though I imagine I will spend lots of time just doing whatever I wanna do.

... You havent been checking in the Faq, right?
    1) There will not be an ending. After story is complete you can continue doing whatever you want, a bit like Skyrim.
    2) Storyline will be awesome. A game always feel better with a nice story. And yes, there will be.
All we know about it apart of mentioned in this thread is that it will begin with destruction of your homeplanet in an attack of an unknown alien force.

Also even with best gear lvl 100 (hardest) planets will still be hard enough as for you to have fun.
