So who actually builds without spawning things in?

First off I'm not saying that building by simply spawning in the needed resources is a bad thing but...

Does anyone here actually build large projects, either in their ship or on a planet, from resources they have gathered manually without using any cheat codes or creative mode mods?

Honestly I think I've only seen one project on here that didn't involve some sort of spawned in object like an outpost object. Now that doesn't mean they spawned in everything else but most of the time it's hard to tell. I haven't seen anyone say if they built it manually or not but probably because of the same fear I have (see below).

I can understand why people would simply spawn things in but... In my opinion... I feel like that lowers the value/quality of the project than if it was made without using any cheats or what not. This is just my opinion though and I'm not trying to enforce it on anyone. I just feel as if a project feels better and feels more like an accomplishment if it was made without cheats, even if it looks just as good as one made with cheats. I do understand though that some people don't have time to grind all the resources and they just want to build, and that's fine.

Personally though I'm a type of player who actually enjoys grinding and tedious tasks in games like collecting resources. I know it's weird but I find it peaceful and I usually do something else while doing it like watching Youtube let's plays in a side by side window. I haven't done any major projects but the tiny ones I have done (like ship work and what not) have been done without cheats and mods. Right now I don't have any pictures though as I recently started a new game to get the best of the update but also some of my older stuff got messed up.

However, I'm afraid that if I made a huge project without using cheats or mods, nobody would believe that I didn't cheat to do it, even though there wouldn't be no unobtainable (without cheats or mods) objects in it.

Anyway, do you build things in Starbound without cheats and what not or do you spawn things in? What is your opinion on this subject? Remember I'm not trying to say one is better than the other; I'm just curious.

My Rise series of building did use spawned items, for it was necessary for some things.

My next series, The Chronicles will simply feature one mod, a block crafting table so I can mine my materials without having to destroy villages to build.

It's not just the tedium, it's the destruction that I dislike. Unless there is an orbital bombardment option to just clear the whole area.... Nah, I'll simply mine my materials and craft them into what I want them to be.

Be a creator, breath life, not death :)

informative: i exclusively play in survival mode, without mods or use of admin commands. it makes building my village a fun challange!

tired: it also means finding the last few necessities for the townsfolk involves traveling far more than i'd otherwise like. the glass alone! surely three blocks of fine sand for just one of glass is a little much?

Well, for specific trees, I need to go find them, so I can't spawn those in easily.

Wish I could place fireflies / firefly bushes though.

I used to, but now I spawn things. Now I only leave planets once I finish turning it into a city.
I see there are some hard core elitists that look down on spawners, but I spawn and don't really care.
I want to build, so I build using spawned items.
    Who's it hurting really?

If a person's focus when looking at a cool build is "Did he cheat to make it?" that guy isn't worth a lick.
You liked it so you built it. That's what matters.

I am in the same boat, OP. I haven't built anything huge, but building is my favorite aspect. I like the grind too. But, I have to say: don't worry about what people think. This community is really laid back and I have never noticed a judgmental comment on this forum at all. So I doubt you'd get any nay-sayers here. Reddit on the other hand, who knows lol. SB is to be played "how you want" and I know that feeling when you see the awesome builds and they have tons of mods and admin on and everything, it does take away some of the mystique at first. It's just a matter of personal preference really, no one is keeping score at all imho.

That and, Starbound is more about exploration, than the grind. I mean, come on, who doesn't want to see an NPC llama race?

I also build without using spawns. It takes out the challenge in me. I don't build massive projects due to the beta phase of the game.
Grinding in this game is my thing,I find it satisfying. (don't cloud your thoughts in this one.I'm not also masochistic)
I also play pure vanilla. Once the game development is finished(which will take time,I know), and I have completed everything that I wanted about this game, that is the time I will add mods. Just like what I did in Terraria and Minecraft long ago.
And to those spawn builders, you guys are still awesome. I mean, If time is your enemy, or you prefer this thing, I don't mind at all. Judging you isn't a good practice. I mean, judging things that doesn't really matter is not a good practice.

We are starbounders, we don't judge or quarrel. We have fun and explore!:)

I never spawned any things in Starbound. The only time I used something akin to cheating was, when I activated admin-invulnerability after getting killed for the n-th time against the Erchius-Boss (but, immediately afterwards, deactivated it again)

But for my building projects (or farming) ... nope ... never ... either I have something available from gathering, 3D printing, constructing and can use it ... or I haven´t ... and have to try ways to build without it

It's really aggravating too because I found this Classic Baseboard tile that is PERFECT for my trophy room halls yet so far it's only in like ONE Apex minidungeon and not even a common one since it's a populated one gaaaahhhh

I don't know what is "major" for you...
My first project in Pleased Giraffe was "major project" for me, and it was built without admin command and spawning any items or mats.
I had only one mod - ExtraZoomLevels for screenshots.

I don't care if "nobody would believe that I didn't cheat to do it".
I did it to show myself that I can build large complexes in survival mode.
But now, after this project, I think next time I'll build in this mode only after the game's release.
And the biggest problem is not the collection of materials or construction in magma.
The most difficult thing for me - to do repetitive parts again and again.
It's not creative, not challenging - just boring.
So now I'm playing with mods.

Building with only what you gather is definitely more suited to smaller scale projects, or experimenting with the tiles you just filled your inventory with.

As for spawning, if it makes you feel more accomplished to have built something without it, then all the power to you. The abundant free time of my youth is viewed differently now, so if I'm after a creative goal, I'd rather just have the tools to make it happen.

That being said, I'm looking forward to the final release when I'm forced to play without admin with my siblings on their server.

I am one maybe not to start out building big things. Of course the things I would build may end up being big in the end. It is due to the way I build. I build usually small things here and there, and sometimes many small things turns into something bigger if on the same planet. I don't completely destroy structures.

What I usually do is maybe see a section and tear it down to add something else or modify them a bit. Like an avian town I tore down a house to make a park, or a glitch castle I took down the entire floor of a king's room to fill the hole in the roof making it as if not even there.

When I look at what others have done. The thought of whether they used commands or a creative mod does not ever crosses my mind. That part doesn't concern me. What does concern me is what they build and the how. How as in what blocks and combinations they used to get the overall look they present. I see it as inspiration sometimes as there are a lot of creativity going into builds.

Saying that I mine my own resources, and use what I have. Sure big projects would take longer than those that do mentioned things, but it is not my concern. Building is my concern. What I build and how I go about it. I prefer not to use those type of mods, or in-game commands. I don't even think I ever used even the admin command to get things started, as at the moment I don't have a use for it when building.

I think the only mods I would use would be ones that craft blocks from other materials, within reason. Nothing that would seem out of balance to make with materials. So I would still be gathering materials regardless. Of course I am referring to a mod I personally made for my personal use, but I haven't updated it to the current version as of yet. Don't know when I would get back to it to do so. Right now it would be more what you see is what you get and can build with. I would go out of my way to get certain materials even if it takes quite a few planets to find, or multiple ones, since again I don't usually tear down entire dungeons or the like.

That is my thoughts on the matter. :)

Lol at the at the anti-destruction parts of this thread... If the rest of the Avian and Apex knew what I've done to get building materials then they'd attack me on sight. xD

(I'm ABOUT to use spawnitem for a build, but it's an insane one that is impossible in vanilla as it is and it's totally separate from my normal base so I say it doesn't count.)

I do unless it's for like a dungeon I want to make or something. I try not to cheat if I'm doing real-game stuff, but if I'm just making a dungeon for funzies I'll spawn in whatever I want. No reason not to. It's not really enjoyable to go hunt for the blocks to build your dungeon with. It's just not

I generally do not for the things that I build. Matter of fact, I haven't since Koala build was a thing. And, what I have found is it cheapens the experience for me, so that is why before I got really big into building, I had already stopped doing so. My building also tends to at least in my head cannon to serve a purpose. For instance, I had added a hunger mod, and so built a farming world, with a major colony involving dozens of NPC's in the asteroid level of the planets. I kinda miss being able to build to my ship that's orbiting the planet, and dealing with lack of air, cold, and hunger. What I don't find cheapens the experience for me, are various mods. While I don't use one currently, an example would be the block creation table mod. Actually, the disabling of sandstone blocks makes me sad, even if I still have like 7 stacks of them, since those, and cobblestone blocks are my favorites to build with. I wish there was a vanilla obsidian brick, as well, but I love the new copper windows.
