So what's the point of making a home?

Well, for one thing, I am KING OF THE SPOONS. So, that settles that.

At some point tree seeds will be added (wood is a fuel source) so it should be possible for the player to create renewable fuel wherever he goes.

I'm expecting the cost of travel will become increasingly trivial at higher levels, as better fuel sources are discovered.

As for building incentive. I never felt like building much in Terraria as I did with Minecraft. But the sheer variety of blocks in Starbound has given me just tons of ideas for things to build. Just for the heck of building them, no incentive required other than the fun of it.

I don't want to read through the whole thread so I don't know if anyone said that yet and I did not tested this yet but my friend told me that if you set your home planet it will cost you only 1 fuel to get back there from anywhere basicly. So the fuel cost is gone like this.

You seem hung up on the now for the initial beta which obviously lacks many features that would encourage building bases and/or town, so we'll focus on the now. Currently, building a base allows you significantly more space to put chests down along with actually putting down the tons of decorations that can be found. If you're a hoarder like me, a few planets can easily fill up a bunch of chests and its just so much more convenient to warp back to my home to stash everything away in an organized and customized-to-however-you-like base.

At this time, there's no upgrade to ships for more space, no interplanetary teleporters, no advance civilization making, no selling off obsolete items, etc. So you either have your really tiny ship and at some point meticulously throw away everything, or you use a measly 400 fuel to go back to a your home sector sector. Fuel isn't that hard to come by, you'd probably spend more time overly throwing out everything than you would cutting down the actually small amount of trees you'd need no matter where you are.

Alongside it really not being that much of a hassle in singleplayer, currently if you're playing multiplayer, then you should already know that you can teleport to a party member's ship even if its in a different sector. That means, as long as you have friends, you could teleport to a ship left over a home base which means not using resources to drop off items. It could be your own ship for even more convenience.

Setting a planet as your home doesn't reduce the cost of travelling, what your friend experienced was the 1 fuel it costs to travel to a planet within the same planetary system that he was in.

I strongly believe that at this current time the devs are more focused on bugs and balance then. This is most likely because they know that they'll have to wipe us out sadly a few times. Which would be a real pain making a massive castle only to loose it. Each person has a different play style, some people love making houses even when the game isn't finished yet and that's awesome, I personally am playing the space management game by tricking out my ship to survive all my needs, with a garden, bedroom, storage, kitchen and forge. Simply because I just want to explore. But it I was on a multiplayer server I would put down roots most likely because I wouldn't be alone with cold lifeless npcs. So no one is right or wrong in this argument it just depends on what seems best to you at this given time. We all just need to remember it's the beta, a very very early beta too as it's only been out for almost three days. Just give it time =)

Simple adjustments to this could be adding craftable items that unlock new events, much like the "beacon" that summons the first boss they could introduce other beacons that unlock events to occur on that planet.

Could be a beacon that signals any wandering civilizations looking for a hospitable planet to live on and if you are on said planet and the event takes place, a ship will land and they will start building a home on an open piece of land.

Could be market beacons that call for NPCs to come and offer rare goods they have found in the sector or maybe even NPCs that offer locations to unique planets that may have secrets hidden in them.

There are a variety of ways they can make "home planets' or the aspect of staying at one place enticing but it will prolly come later on after balance, since it would be nice if there was incentive to stay on a planet since it is true once you mine a majority of the resources out of a planet, you are better off going to a fresh planet and starting the process all over again.

If Chucklefish included an item that allowed you to grow trees, that would make things at least a little less costly fuel-wise.

For now, I have basically what could be considered End Game for the Beta so far, and level 40 planets the max we can go to. So i picked a nice level Moon planet (Since top tier armour has high warmth) and settled down for storage and to show off my loots. I still planet hop and have chests on my ship but i get a chance to purge my ship of trash loot and things.

As near as I can tell the primary point of having a home on a planet right now is simply more space. You ship is kinda small and at least for now it can't be made any bigger.

What's the purpose? Planets are shared between characters so storing armor/weapons/resources on a planet will let you transfer things from one character to another serving much like a HUB. The ship is for your convenience so that you don't have to repeatedly fly to your planet and with the current version the ship would be considered useless in that since you can now teleport to your homeplanet using the teleporter. The ship is also useful for bringing in resources and items from singleplayer to multiplayer. You can stock up on ores and bars in single player then startup multiplayer and not have to worry about having no resources cause the planet you started on was mined to death.

It really depends on your mindset. If you already think that it's useless then you won't find a way to use it.

Also there's always one reason and this reason applies to every situation that exists but it's not always the best reason. This reason is... Because You Can.

You do realise it's been more than a month since the last post on this thread, and that this thread was started long before the free warp to home was introduced, right?

There's a mod for minecraft called Kingship or something. That mod essentially generates an entire castle with a village that is highly interactive. Every NPC has a function. Merchants sell and buy stuff. The guildmaster gives you tasks and missions. You can build specialized buildings and assign it a duty that it will perform as that specific role. When you build an entire kingdom, you gain the commands of a king. You can order armies to go attack monsters, order your trainers to train more soldiers, order your villages to farm or sell stuff.

If TIY implemented that kind of behavior and function into Starbound, the game would be a hall of famer in my opinion. Might not ever happen, but it's good to dream sometimes.

It's better than making a new thread talking about the same thing. Unless there's already one that I missed. I also figured it was before the free warp was introduced but I wanted to point it out that there is a Warp now.

I'm pretty sure you can teleport to your home planet from your ship anywhere instantly for free, so at the moment it's better to set up crafting and storage on a planet you like rather then taking up ship space.

Surprising how such a simple feature can make building a home/base suddenly have a purpose.
Or at least, not feel like such a tremendous time waste.

I have a home because I like building my own design and I store many items that do not fit on my ship. I travel to other planets but can teleport to home to receive or store items and then continue my adventure!
