So what are players supposed to do right now?

Since players can expect their progress in this persistent-world game to be erased at least once, what do the devs recommend all these new players do to help get the game released faster, or at least to where their progress will be kept?

Not a whine thread, just asking. After buying the game on Steam I found out there will be a character wipe, or more. That's fine for now, it'll still be fun snooping around but it does remove a lot of the incentive to play at all, except just to see what's in it. Might as well help with the beta if possible.

Two words for you my good friend... Beta Test.

Edit: Meaning find bugs, make reasonable suggestions, etc. Will no doubt help the game move along beta phase at a quicker pace.

They expect you to test, this beta, which, when we put the words together the right way becomes BETA TEST, now, say it along with me this time class. BETA. TEST.

well with a new wipe comes pretty major changes , so at least you wont be board and be thinking oh well i can easilly do this , a good amount of content will be added with the new wipe hopefully so you can easily be entertained for hours on end

also no amount of feedback will get the game released faster , this is purely dev work time related and them deciding if its on a good state to be released , still a year or so till fully released i would say

Wait. Or just enjoy the game without getting too attached to certain builds

It's been said already, but this is beta. The purpose isn't for you to only have a great time with no hiccups or issues. Beta is also largely for the purpose of testing - if you can't handle wipes, play later on when wipes will no longer happen.

I really don't mean to be any harsher than necessary, but as others have mentioned, you're/we're supposed to be testing the game.
If not for bugs, at least for balance/feature issues.

I wondered when they first mentioned they were going ahead with the beta testing idea, how many people know what beta testing can really be like?
It's not always fun. In fact, the point isn't to cultivate personal fun or gratification, it's about testing. Doing things hundreds of times, but slightly different to try and elicit a bug or glitch.
It can be rather boring and exhausting sometimes.

It's not set in an iron clad contract that that is what we must all do, but it is the intended result.

By all means, if you get to the "end game" and just want to have fun and build, then please do so. You paid for the game, you can do with it what you will.
We're all more or less doing the developers a favor by helping out to test the game. Things like character wipes are just simply a part of that.

When I'm designing a module for Neverwinter Nights say, I create and recreate probably upwards of 50 characters per module just testing the balance.
This is why the current setup for the sectors and tier progression does not bother me, because I recognize it from my own work as a temporary aid in order to make game testing easier.

Whew! I've waffled on long enough. This old gal needs to get ready for bed.

Play your least favorite race (you racist! :p) so in the ineveitable wipe you won't be that disapointed.

Alternativley, you CAN tell Steam to never update and continue enjoying the game wipe free until the game has reached its wipe-free state. But you miss out on all the changes.

Those people are actually giving the correct answer. While your post on the other hand, is just complaining about people telling others to do the right thing.

IMHO calling this a beta is bit too much. In its current state this game is an early production alpha that, again IMHO, should never be released to anyone but the QA testers. Beta testing is about searching for bugs and possible improvements to balance and existing features. Currently there's almost no ballance, major selling points and key functions of the game are missing, and bugs don't need to be searched for as they just lie there big and in the open, rather hard to miss.
