They could have finished the beta by then and just be bringing along a demo version to show people to get them interested. This is probably a case of "We don't know if we'll have it done by then, so we're just going to always talk about the future as if we haven't finished by then"

We don't know if Starbound will be done at this point regardless of if they are talking about it as if it would be done or not. Yes, based on the wording there is a very good chance that the full game will not be out until after that point, but the beta could come any time before that as "current state" could imply any state the game is currently in, finished or not.

 

Just because they said something like this doesn't mean you should already squeeze any possible information out of it. It's just a sentence, it's not like the devs only say things that are exactly true and will happen.
Also they can't just simply be sure they won't have it done by then.
Calm your tits guys and stop taking any info from the devs as a puzzle piece of the Release Date Mystery. And no, there's no such thing as a "Release Date Mystery".

 

The current state could very well be beta.

 

Whatever state it is when E3 happens, whether it be alpha, beta, release, or post-release, will be shown at E3.

You misread it and are overthinking it, sshh.

 

Also, E3 is in early June, not July.

 

Or they will reveal the beta at E3? If they go to E3, it's probably the most likely thing to happen. Maybe even a more precise release ETA.
