Have noticed a trend recently when browsing the wiki with many things I end up clicking on having the banner "Item is unobtainable" or "no longer exists". It seriously feels like they have cut the game in half and that is being generous.

Why was the game gutted so much and are there plans to implement things back in?

What specifically is your grief? To me, the heaviest blow was old lore and some dungeons (USCM Bunker, Floran Prison and Apex Test Chambers). Only other removed things, IIRC, were racial weapons and some crafting materials.

My grief is seeing so many "Item is unobtainable" or "no longer exists" tags on many things on the wiki including dungeons, mechanics, items, bosses and so on. The game feels like a shell in comparison to pre launch.

Umm yeah they changed the whole questline so if you're looking for the old bosses, they were replaced. That's not gutting, that's replacing.

Items - everyone misses the racial weapons, yes.

Everything else - devs said they will continue to support the game basically forever, so yes, expect updates where more stuff comes out once it is polished.

If it was out now, you would just complain it wasn't polished enough because of some bug or imbalance.

They could still come up with a way to re add things they took out instead of just taking them out completely. Something like special mini boss challenge portals that rewarded you racial weapons at the end or something. How hard would that be to implement?

And don't presume please. I didn't actually play SB at all much during development due to not having a decent enough rig at the time. It was only until 1.0 I learnt how much they removed after researching the wiki. I have no problems with balance or bugs.

EDIT: Read that wrong sorry, I see what your saying. Okay I get some stuff was removed due to bugs or imbalance but there is a lot more on the wiki than just that that was removed.

I believe they will re-add most of it in one way or another, at least they intend to flesh out the game much more with updates. As far as difficulty of doing so, I remember in the alpha/beta there were concerns over things like developers taking too much time on making changes to the character creation screen instead of adding new monsters. Basically, it's hard, and this isn't a huge studio, so it may take a while.

Most, if not all items marked as unobtainable are still in the game. These are items the player isn't meant to obtain such as the breakable capsules that are everywhere.

I meant stuff lost in transition between Giraffe and 1.0, those were dummied out before that

So there is really no way to find back USCM Bunker? I want some of the deco in here.. can'T find it anyway... that and a medical bay sign :/

Nope. You can find some of the stuff by other means - medical signs occur in some Apex buildings, vendomats and some consoles are found in prisons, some of the furniture is sometimes sold by human and frogg traders, everything is still in assets and thus spawnable through admin mode and mods - but even then that's a long shot, and most things are, for all intents and purposes, lost

Starbound is a game that's been in development. It's really not that unusual to see so much content phase out of use or be replaced. The main difference is that we, the community, have been able to play the game as it's been made: We feel the loss of each removed item/feature much more than if we hadn't taken part in Early Access.

Well to be fair other early access games I played actually never removed stuff or changed it to such a point it was noticeable for me. For example with Minecraft and terraria although everyone hates it when those two get brought up.

Wait they took out the Apex test labs??? Those were my favorite source of home decorations. Damn.

This pretty much sums it up right here. It only feels like there's stuff missing because we've played the game so early on. Tons of games, even AAA games have content removed or even changed altogether, but their "EA" is usually a lot more exclusive.

Let's not forget there is content updates and likely more word from the devs regarding either bringing the content back or improving on it.

Different games, different developers. Good for them for being able to retain features throughout development, but that is not the case for every developer and every game.

Minecraft, for one, never really had anything removed because it was/arguable still is, very basic and bland, so there is not much to actually remove. They also only develop one feature at a time, so if they are working on it, then it is a feature they know they want, and they are always very basic features in themselves. The more complex things come from player discoveries with feature interactions the developer never really thought about. And lets not forget how different a game Minecraft is now vs when it was 1.0.

Terraria is similar. 1.0 reliece was very basic. Skeletron, or whatever he is called, was the last boss. There wasn't a whole lot of content going on there in the first place.

I'm just pointing out that there are games that do fine early access without removing too much content/or at all

    Minecraft early access?

Reminder : EA =/= Alpha release.

What's the difference between a paid beta/alpha and early access ?

    Game wise
