So, is this game even actually progressing? (Long)

I agree that updating a decent update to the 'stable' build would do a lot to tide fears, even if those updates only came once a month or so.

I've been reading various concerns around the internet and most of the people point out that there "hasn't been an update in months". They do not know of or understand there is are unstable and nightly branches they can get updates from. (BTW; Is 'Unstable' even used anymore, either? I'd prefer that over nightlies, myself.)

If people saw SOME updates to the game, even if they only came monthly or so, it would at least take away much of the arguments of those people and perhaps lower the number of people frequently spreading the fear and misinformation to others. At least then we might see less people popping in here and criticizing the game's development that they know nothing about.

The real problem seems to be that Steam basically opened up Beta Access to the mainstream gamer and the general consumer still doesn't understand even what a Beta is, even with all the warnings. You've got to know that you're going to get a lot of impulse buyers in that crowd, and with impulse buyers will be impulse complainers - people who complain without actually thinking or looking into the matter.
But to solve that problem, give them updates and you'll bide their impulses a while. It will at least provide some additional time until the game is "1.0" and have less negativity surrounding it. Which also mean more sales of the finished product.

To be honest I'm not sure why most devs go the way of..... "I don't like the way some of the community reacts so I'm going to ignore every single person who doesn't absolutely love us."
And no offense to Tiy or anyone, but that's sorta what has happened here...... It's generally a bad policy.

 

Anything that CF does, good or bad, gives material for the complainers. There is no satisfying these folks, it is like the original terminator where Kyle Reece states "Listen, and understand. (Complainers) are out there. They can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They don't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead"

 

There will always be people like that, but you can definitely make it not worth their while.

Not every game has a large number of people stating the devs abandoned the game or that they don't care or the game is dead, or blah blah blah. So obviously there are things you can do to get those kind of people to go away. I'm just pointing out one of those options.

Well this depends on what you see as progress.
Like every other day one of the devs will upload screenshot with new fancy bricks and people will light heartedly bring out comments about horse AI or something like that.
So is that progress? Well.. Its something. You know, you never have enough fancy bricks to build with.

Seriously, people should check the nightlies, maybe even use admin codes if they want to be really spoiled. if there are any bugs, its not like they take out half your hard drive or splash your screen full of dead corpses or anything.

 

As opposed to splashing your screen with live corpses.. Now that would really be scary..

 

I will say this again, because I left these forums a few months ago after having this same discussion and not much progress has appeared to have taken place since then.

The level of interest in this game has (for me, but I would assume many people) dropped significantly ever since they put their focus on features that didnt seem to enhance my experience any longer. The nightlies were good in theory to give people a sense of the work being done, but all I could take from them was this MASSIVE list of useless items that were purely decorative and played no major role. hundreds of items, lamps, posters, chairs, completely arbitrary things, must have taken hours to design and will probably take a solid day to fully put into the game....purely aesthetic.

What I would have preferred to see was something of a story being built instead, the progression system or some kind of leveling (whatever they had intended to be the main track of direction for the game). But, as they have seemed to spread their focus so thin, we have a numerous amount of features being half-completed or that will take longer because so many of the devs are all doing different, some could argue meaningless, tasks in the grand scheme of the playable game.


Release a stable with whatever updates to the core functionality, this nightly update thing has failed to hold my attention because it just looks like amateur sandbox diddling. I dont want to keep watching rehearsals for the play, I'd like to see a rough run-through, instead of people reading their lines from scripts and the director calling out blocking. That was a stretch but you get my point. I want a tightly presented show with the lights and sound and curtain being drawn.

If the artist told you it would be done this year then changed it to next year then changed it to be determined would you be annoyed by that?

Starbound is a good teaching tool. Never ever ever believe future promises. If a product is not in a state right at that moment you would accept if the company disappeared do not give them your money.

Because I am sure this will be brought up, I did NOT get this from Steam for beta access. I got it during the preorder back when the game was suppose to be out soonish.

 

Haha, as Hooven says. I dont get all the hate. You preordered expecting it to be done on your terms. Sorry. But your jimmies are going to be rustled if you think that way. The games taking a while. Who cares. Play other stuff. Be pleasently surprised hwen it releases. As much as i want to play in the new combat system I am going to wait until they push out something to the stable build.

 

If I saw good progress on the painting, why would I be upset? I'm not an entitled child, I am capable of some things called 'understanding' and 'patience'.
I understand why people are upset - I never said I don't understand that. I've simply pointed out that those people are also acting like spoiled children.

thanks for your honest opinions OP. i hope you don't get too much hate for your horrible crime of having an opinion. i hope that the banter on this thread doesn't cause the mods too much stress. and most of all i hope that the devs somehow manage to impress in the future. i enjoyed your speech/rant.

 

I think the lack of stable updates has maybe been stretched out tooooo far, regardless of disclaimers issued, relationships are relationships regardless of who its between and this blackout for people that don't wanna do nightlies is just hurting the relationship.

Chucklefish is a miner in a cheese mine, mining away at the great big cheese quarry in Wisconsin, (better off ted reference)making a whole lotta money and cheese for the good of the couple and some people are the girlfriend that will stick by it cos "we had plans and I'll love you always" and they mean it, others really want maybe some flowers on their birthday, atm Chucklefish isn't giving us an flowers, just a steady paycheck cos that was the plan and as silly as that sounds if you think about it, that's exactly what's happening here, either you're committed and self assured or you're just not feeling the love and uneasy, worried about the relationship cos they leave notes and invitations to help in the cheese mines but you just got your nails done and you don't expect to go get into the mines and don't want to.

Personally I'd like some flowers, I don't need them cos we have a plan and I'll stick by you Chucklefish.... but seriously, its been a year and you missed my birthday.

That's like 90% of most disgruntled people's issues here right now cos... Ya know, The Forest's girlfriend gets Flowers all the time and don't even get me started on Space Engineer's girlfriend.

Anyhoo, that's my psychological commentary.. Agree, disagree, its ok, we all know why we are like we are and its perfectly ok. Excuse me while I go do something manly now.
