Edit: Let this thread die please, it answered my questions but it seems that people still want to reply to it for whatever reason, it's been up for more than a week now and I would prefer for it to sink down into the abyss, especially seeing as how tons of other people have recently made threads like these.

If you want to read the original post and it's replies, they are down below. I don't know how to delete a thread or if it is even possible, so I'm not going to bother right now.

I know that this will be an awesome game and that they are working hard on it to get it released. But the main thing I'm nervous about is just that, the release date.

Now don't get me wrong, I would love for them to take it slow and perfect the game before it's initial release. But I am just worried that it will be one of those scenarios where everyone is physicked for the release at the end of this year, then it turns out to be postponed for the next 5 months... Also I'm incredibly nervous that when it's release comes about, my computer won't be able to handle it graphics wise... An example of where this happened is Borderlands 2 (For those of you that played it you know full well what I mean) Borderlands 2 went overboard with pop culture references and I didn't even understand half the quotes. They were fun for a quick chuckle but otherwise got a bit annoying after the first 5 times I heard popular re-hashed internet troll quotes ("You no-mad bro?"). Borderlands 2 was incredibly fun, but even with my recently upgraded video card I had to play the game on minimal graphics.

Basically in this thread we re-assure each other and have a nice classic Starbound discussion. There are a lot of things I am fretting about in this game, but the good heavily outweighs the bad so I'm not exactly concerned.

I think it would help a LOT of the devs would post maybe a speculated min. and recommended graphics build for the game? It would sure put me as well as a lot of other people at ease. Apologies if I sound like I'm nagging or complaining, it's just that I am insanely exited about this game and don't want to get shot down by something as often happens to me when buying newer games.

    I dunno, maybe I'm paranoid?

  2. Let the re-assuring begin!
First off-- I'd put a lot of money on the fact that Starbound will be released before the end of January, probably before.
As for the graphics card paranoia, (is there a word for that?) I don't think you'll have any trouble; Starbound's requirements will probably be not much more than Terraria's.
And if it is high-tech, I'm sure someone will end up making a performance-enhancing mod or something ;)

Indeed. Although it was quite a while ago, Tiy had said he played Starbound on a MacBook, and it ran as fast as it would on big-mega-awesome computers. I'm actually quite worried about nothing, honestly, I trust the devs and that there will be server settings to prevent griefing and performance improvements and I don't care when the game comes out. My biggest concern is that the game is never going to come out; which is a near impossibility at this point.

  4. Yes, I don't think we have to worry about the game not releasing at all :p

That is why I said it was my biggest concern, to state that my biggest concern is the one most likely not to happen at all.

Honestly all I am concerned about is that this game is released in a period between Christmass and January 5th, I want for this game to come out after I get my new beast-of-a-laptop for xmas but before school starts :p.

  7. Maybe we'll all just skip school one day to play Starbound. :DD

My biggest concern is that the planets won't be very interesting to explore. I know the game is far from complete but the livestreams haven't really shown anything underground. No plants, no loot, no interesting cave formations... I hope Chucklefish is planning to do a lot more with the subterranean areas.

Borderlands 2 is a 3D game with nice quality textures and lots of 3D models everywhere in the forms of rockets, monsters, players, the environment etc.

Starbound is a 2D game with retro graphics.
YOU could draw a whole monster in MSpaint for it alone, with some patience. :)

If your graphics card can run Terraria it can probably run Starbound.
Heck, Starbound probably doesn't even need Direct X. (It wouldn't run on Mac OS if it did, afaik)
So... it might have even lower Graphics Card requirements than Terraria does.

Starbound is likely gonna depend on your CPU quite a bit more than Graphics Card.
Since you can run Borderlands 2 somewhat I wouldn't worry about your CPU lacking anything for Starbound!

Personally I'm definitely set at least 10 times over as far as my computer specs go.
    Release date?
I try not to think of the release date too much and try to keep myself distracted!
The more I think about it the slower time goes!

Griefing: Now that's a legit worry.
I don't play online all that much and if Starbound gets a central server or Steam integration then banning people is going to be very simple.
On Terraria bans are ridiculously easy to bypass because you never need any kind of account to play it.
If Chuckefish handles this well griefers will be more like on Minecraft; an annoyance.
Not something to roll back your server every 20 minutes for.

I sort of agree with this. But I think the variety in which worlds will be created, and the cave system swe have seen? Will make it well worth exploring, I'm sure they have something planned for underground fauna and the like as well, I wouldn't worry to much.

My big worry is griefing on servers, I haven't been able to find (Or perhaps lack of looking) concrete as to how servers are going to be handled can we make private servers? Will that be a thing that's allowed like Terraria? Is it all public hosted?

If you make a server since each "world" is unique to it's co-ordinates, it won't be something so drastic as each world is perma-changed for people is it? Like if Group A goes and blows it up, when Group B on another server finds it, it's already blown up, I doubt this is the case but...you know I worry. :)

Servers are hosted by players, just like on Terraria and Minecraft.
If I remember right you can make them passworded. (...it'd be pretty silly if you couldn't!)
The servers have no connection to one another unless you specifically choose to link them together somehow.

So no, if I host a little server on my computer and blow up everything it won't magically destroy things on other people's servers. ;)

The server basically provides a shared Space Station for everyone and people can go anywhere they want from there.
The Planets are saved for everyone in the same way Minecraft's Normal World, Nether and The End all change for everyone on the same server.

    I'm still waiting patiently.

    Other: Monster spawn mechanics
If you watched the 47 min livestream you may have noticed the annoying way monsters spawned every few steps Tiy took. Now this may be a complete non issue as they are working on monster AI and may be deliberately forcing them to spawn like that. Nevertheless it is a concern of mine.

    Secondarily: Planet generation
In both the livestreams so far, the planets that were generated seemed rather devoid of detail- mostly deserts with few foreground trees unlike the Forest Demo. This like the former may be related to the testing somehow though.

    Regarding the other issues:
Graphics: Not a concern, It is looking sharp and doesnt seem to be a system hog unless your running 1990s tech
Griefing: Not at all as I plan to play solo
Release date: I would prefer its released when its done and don't want to rush development.

It was? I heard about the game back in 2010 but I never saw any projected release dates, just occasional new screenshots and short videos. But they have the manpower and funding to get it done now thanks to Kickstarter.

My main concern is of running out of things to do after around 100-150 hours of gameplay (yes I do know there will be updates), problem is, I have so much spare time I can barely wait 1 week for the next update.
