If your telling me you can get Durasteel armour without beating Tier 1 boss.
I will agree 100% there is no linearity.
And i don't mean by trading with other players - or just giving it to your self either.

Heck if you can fight a Teir 4 boss without having to fight a Tier 1 boss you win there is no linearity at all.
But we both know the answer don't we.

Otherwise its called linearity my friend.

No its called a "Tier System" for a reason.
It is not a place holder - the weapons and armour may varry with buffs and what not.
But in the end the railroad will be there.

I like how you ignored the reality of words you don't know also. It sort of follows the trend of ignoring the reality of the current situation quite nicely.

  3. Yeah... The word you were looking for is Dynamic or Dynamics. And I looked up that word just now. It doesn't appear in any standard dictionary. Just 'web' based items. And even then, it's definition is a "state of being Dynamic" which is a redundant statement. So no. Don't try sounding wordy like it give weight to your argument. Pretty sounding words don't change the fact that you want your personal PLAYSTYLE to be the basis for the game.

Now, to speak of ignoring things. I'll reiterate my statement.

If you want More Sandbox. Just stay in Alpha. You have no reason to progress.

No one's saying the linear nature isn't there. It certainly is. You're simply incapable of seeing around it at the rest of the rather impressive gameplay. You don't want to do the progression, THEN DON'T. No one's making you do it. you can see 80% of the game without ever leaving Alpha sector.

    This.

This happens in nearly every RPG where you fight something to get a chest or to move onto a new town with a better merchant than before. "Just because he sells better weapons/bigger health potions ect." it just stands out more in Starbound but that doesn't mean it isn't a good thing. If they went past tier 10 to tier 15-20 heck even tier 50 then that would be a game of justifiable size and content but that's a lot of bosses/new ores that need balancing and it's just not worth the effort. Once the game is balanced and the costs to get to impervium (And any other tier) have nearly tripled then it wouldn't be so easy to advance and you would have some difficulty moving from planet to planet/sector to sector ect. Point is the game would be much more enjoyable with lots more difficulty and not these overpowered weapons that can kill any boss in one hit.

    Just my thoughts though! ;)

This whole argument has become a word salad. Like, a good bit of time ago. Sesquipedalian loquaciousness never solved anything, and this debate has become pretty impassioned, so it will continue to be more loquacious.

Surprising you don't know how words are formed.
To surmise its through a combination of prefix-root-suffix [ in general ]
hence making it a valid word - The suffix [ ity ] - means state of.
Hence by the most rudimentary logic and basic comprehension of English - it is easy for one to ascertain to meaning of the word.
But that would require some sort of logical skill of course.

Acutally you did say linear nature isn't there.
In fact you said "Give him a reward - its playstyle"

Its not a question of wanting to do progression - its a question you can only obtain certain items and tech and / or kill certain monsters unless you progress.
Its quite a different thing all together.

Okay, I'm really tired and about to go to sleep so I only read about the first 3 pages.

To the OP, I'd ask if you have read everything Tiy posted on the home page about upcoming features. Do any of those things in that list seem to be anything that will appeal to you to make the game more enjoyable? If not, I'd suggest coming up with ideas to pitch them as to what you'd like to see in the game that would make the game more enjoyable for you and those that are sharing your opinion, which from the few pages I've read are a good handful of people.

Me personally, I am having an absolute blast with the game. Honestly, I'm very much looking forward to the next character wipe and while I'm waiting I'm just goofing around with another lowbie character. When I read the list of intended upcoming features that's not even everything they have planned, I can see me adding hundreds more hours on the 60+ I've already logged.

I agree that there's some adjustments to be made. But, that's pretty obvious seeing how early into the beta we are. The game is very much as you said. Mine ore, craft upgrades, defeat boss to move to the next sector and repeat. If that's you do that up to impervium, the game feels very lackluster and dare I say boring. However, I personally like to explore the various worlds and take in the sights, as silly as that may sound. I loved it when I found my very first air ship anchor or prison camp. I helped my friend collect seeds to plant a massively huge garden for cooking. I enjoyed hunting for various decorations to make my ship unique and awesome.

Right now the beta is what you make of it because we're playing a mostly incomplete game. As for the direction it's headed, I read Tiy's post and I just absolutely love the direction they're taking us in. However, if you have any ideas, lets hear them! What do you want to see in the game?

this post makes no sense. what game doesn't use linear progression as a means to drive the player forward? i literally cannot think of an example. even other "sandbox" games have you crafting and finding better gear and weapons through exploration and crafting. minecraft and terraria both work the same way, you craft gear to get better ores to make better gear to search farther to find better better ore to make better gear, repeat. the only other "sandbox" games i know of are GTA and their ilk, games which starbound can't really be fairly compared to. even then, those games are still about near-linear progression through story missions. it seems like you're asking for a game concept that doesn't really exist. even the changes you suggest don't change this method of progression, just the tools used. if you're saying the game is boring because there is little incentive to progress, well thats what story missions, quests, and multiplayer are for. this is the same for any game. if you played a GTA beta and it had no story of missions implemented, you would grow bored very quickly. this doesn't mean that the "core mechanics" are wrong, it just means the game isn't finished. yeesh, give it some time people. if you don't like how the game is currently, wait a few months and come back to try again. try thinking about what you're saying before you post.

  9. Yeah... no... your argument there about language. Just no. You can't just tack pieces together and call it a word. Just no. Dynamic itself is a state. adding "ity" to the end makes it REDUNDANT.

Tell me, since you quoted me there... Where did I even say linear in that piece? Think ya might be hallucinating a bit. Progressing to fight stronger things is PLAYSTYLE. Focusing on Exploration? PLAYSTYLE. Building bases and cities, guess what... PLAYSTYLE. So once again, don't try to force the rest of the game to conform to YOUR PLAYSTYLE. Broken record again there pal. Zealotry.

And don't ever insult my intelligence or logic again. You're the one repeating things like some religious mantra without much if anything to support your arguments. You're not providing any solid evidence or basis for what you say even when people have, multiple times, given clear and evidence based arguments to the contrary. You're a ZEALOT wanting to force your playstyle on the game.

What's the point of killing those monsters? Other than pixels that drop from all of them, None. Except bosses. Which are strictly for progression. No one ever says you HAVE to fight the bosses. You can see the entirety of Alpha sector without it. And as said, alpha contains 80% of the content.

All the Tech can be found just about in any sector. I've seen nothing to indicate otherwise, and in fact, have seen more evidence to support this when I found Energy dash, Gravity Bubble, and the Mech all in Alpha sector. And as far as items go. Sure you can only get certain items by having their resources from later tiers, but those are decorative ONLY. They aren't required for play AT ALL. Except maybe the wiring tool, but it hasn't even been fleshed out yet at all except the most basic of 'on-off' features. And all those Decorative items have a counterpart in Alpha.

    So again...

IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PROGRESSION, NO ONE IS MAKING YOU DO IT. STOP WHINING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT IS A PLAYSTYLE CHOICE AND NOTHING MORE.

The progression system is a placeholder while the content is being created. I hate saying beta is beta but this whole thread is based on a lack of knowledge or research. If you fail to understand how beta's work and don't monitor updates from the developers, then you're not really in a place to suggest improvements. Your whole post was a waste of my time.

The thing is there is a countless amount of content to do in Starbound, however by following the current tier/sector system it feels linear and gives the impression that there's nothing else to do than to grind. It's like playing Minecraft for the goal of defeating the enderdragon albeit pointless obliterating the original purpose of the game. On the other hand, sandbox means you can do anything without following a set goal like Skyrim for instance. I've finished Sector X, and to me the current game feels a little stale although I know there is more content out there, it's the linearity that kills it for me.

Oh nice from 60% to 80% now. So a drastic change.
    Seen nothing that says otherwise?
How about the actual loot code?
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\assets\treasure\default.treasurepools

    Mech Tech 3
    Butterfly Tech 2
Code doesn't lie, you on the otherhand.

As for other limitations You should see
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound\assets\player.config

I am sure many people would love to have access to those "decorative" items earlier on without having to repeatedly beat 4 - 10 bosses along the way.

Guys, hate to break it to you, but games like these always have some sort of leveling/grinding.
I don't understand why this is a bad thing. You grind, farm, etc and progress further.
And yeah, there may always be things to do on the side, but it always ends up in progressing.

Again, why is this a bad thing? I'm having a blast grinding and defeating deadly monster, hopping from planet to planet - solely to grind.
And then when I get tired of that, perhaps I'll do some building.
The game isn't even finished yet, we have no idea how dynamic it could become. So I'd say: If you don't like games like these because: "They're to linear", then don't play them.
    Simple as that.

I think it's important to remember that this alpha/beta stage of the game, that has only been out for a very short time, really is the bare bones. We're missing a huge amount of content - over time, there will be more and more distractions to get involved with that will dilute the focus on simply progressing to the next tier. What we do currently have seems to really be there to give us something to 'do' while we test the game - ie: the early stages of progression and balance. Lots is going to change. That said, there's plenty to do if you choose, for me at least - build things, explore, etc.

I'm going to agree with the OP, at least in some parts, about the linear gameplay.

I don't like the boss gates personally. I would much prefer being able to fight any of the bosses at any time and having them drop a component to upgrade one of my current crafting stations or allow me to build a a new crafting station. The new or upgraded crafting stations could provide more blueprints for higher technology equipment and gear. The new gear wouldn't make you stronger in the power creep sense, but allow you to deal with certain threats more easily or construct more complicated equipment and decorative items. A gun-smithing station would be very welcome. Someone suggested an improved 3D printer capable of generating any block, which would help with base-building. Of course, someone who isn't interested in base building wouldn't need to fight that boss. The players could prioritize which bosses to fight based on what they like to do. Exploration, combat, building, what have you.

I also agree about the ore/gear progression system being lackluster. "Different colored iron" is a good way to put it. It doesn't even make sense that there would only be certain ores on planets of a certain threat level. That just feels awkward. It would make more sense to make planet environmental conditions determine ore types. Maybe extremely cold planets have a certain type of ore, so you need access to an advanced leatherworking station to create clothing to survive there. Same sort of thing with hot environments, airless environments, water-worlds, etc. I would much rather see equipment that provided other benefits besides "more armor and health". Armor based on situations or playstyles would be more interesting.

All in all, I think it best to let the players decide how to progress through game, or even what "progression" is.

Think EvE Online with crafting instead of skillbooks.

That's because the current model is.

Which I acknowledged in my post. Hell, you quoted it.

    Okay.

    Okay.

I've never said anything of the sort. I said "Starbound is currently a game of "gather enough materials to summon a boss that drops an item to introduce you to the next tier." I also said "sure, there probably will be changes that solve this" and "it doesn't really change the fact that this is an issue here-and-now."

I don't really see where you're coming from here. :wut:
