doesnt matter... the mechanic works in every game.. if u dont like it, its ur problem i think. no offense

i also like to build really awesome looking homes, in many different themes and styles. and this game offers a lot of stuff u can build and add to ur home.

Yes, i want that maybe more is added to the game. maybe new game mechanics that add fun. i just want to say that for >! myself !< im completly satisfied with this game, as it is.

    The problem is:
You don't like the game mechanic then answer these questions:
What do u expect from such a game?
How much playtime in content do you expect? (Also what is content for you? A lore that you can play along?)
How can such a content look like?
What else do you want to see in the game? (For myself i would say: Enchanting, Alchemy, Fishing my beloved professions)

I like building fancy houses, but I like making something that has a function besides looks. Right now the only challenge is collecting enough building blocks.
That said, I am much more confident that there will be more to do in that regard in the future.

What worries me about the future is the tier system. If that is how Terraria is, then I'm glad I never bought it. If it isn't changed, I hope someone makes a tier-free mod.

Offtopic: Terraria is nowhere near as linear as this is. If you like the way starbound plays (mechanic wise) atm I'd recommend you try Terraria out, it's cheaper also  In Terraria there's several ways to get to the "end".

    I couldn't express it better.

Beside that, I still can't see how a tier system could nicely fit in a sandbox game. In my personal opinion, one excludes the other.

So, since it's in beta and commenting or suggesting seem to not be extremely welcomed, I'll stop playing this game for a while. Time is precious. See you in few months (perhaps).

I'm surprised this thread is still going. I did a video review and put on the original post. Hope you guys like it.

Pretty nice video, a few too many pauses perhaps, but nice nontheless.

Thank you, I do have the tendency to make the text change on music ques so there can be a few longer then there should be pauses. I try to avoid the "text wall that happens to have music playing" effect.

i dont know why people said gta is a sandbox... its like the people who think anarchy mean chaos.
a sanbox games dosent mean a non-linear games its more than just that.. if gta is a sandbox then every today's games is a sandbox

I want more features. I want the game fleshed out. Oh, how I want it to be good! But the tier progression hurts. Everything else has potential, and I feel as if I can still enjoy all of those things, but tier progression is too prevalent and bland. I feel as if I'm getting a bowlful of Avesmingo, but with a tablespoon of wartweed mixed in. :chucklefish:

from what i know this game is about adventure so for me i didn't even start making armour and stuff for about 5 days because i like exploring most people rush to get armour and stuff which by itself is boring and then you keep rushing so you don't die therefor i gets boring again soooo, yet again you move on until your at the end then what? so here's what i have to say and how i like to play this game is just admire everything and even though say you may not have a reason to build a house its still fun to do so, so why not do it? You don't have to rush to get the best stuff is my point...expeshially if you have friends since your bound to get into something and have fun! P.S playing my own music entertained me FOR HOURS!

actually space combat can have a effect on this say your ship gets damaged in battle and if you go into another your gonna die which in this case say it has a penalty such as loose 3 random things on your ship ok so instead of continuing onto harder solar systems etc to find say a space outpost were you can repair your ship you can be forced to go back to sector one to find one that you know is there and safe, aswell as if you have to repair it yourself you may go back to sector 2 to find parts more easily without a problem, as well as some quest may force you to travel back to other sectors which will have more unique monsters than the harder sector your used to possibly making it harder, and for dungeons those are there for the sense of adventure etc that this game want's/need's

In regards to the comment on how there is no real reason to build anything:

It is true that there is no reason to build a house in this game, but that is also true for both Terraria and more Minecraft. This may be just me but I felt like building an actually good looking home in Terraria was nearly impossible. The building mechanics were very unwieldy and most of the block textures were meh, they didn't really mix either. The reason people actually build good looking buildings in Minecraft is because there is virtually no progression to speak of, so the only thing to do is build, and Minecraft does a fairly good job of letting you just build.
I think starbound may be able to strike a great balance between what Terraria does and what Minecraft does. When i first built something in Starbound I can only describe it as being pure bliss. It is just so easy and smooth. Minecraft is all building, Terraria is all progression, Starbound is both.

Though I must admit that in the current version of the game that the progression side is more robust than the building since many blocks are currently uncraftable. I am expecting that to be sorted out in the future.

A lot of this may just be my opinion, but it is just how I have judged these 3 games to be.

And one other thing: please don't get on my back for comparing Starbound to Terraria and Minecraft. I'm not calling Starbound a rip off or a copy, but these games are all part of the same genre and should be compared at least in certain aspects.

It's less true for the games you used as references. In Terraria, NPCs have to have rooms to move into. In Minecraft, pistons exist so you can create moving contraptions to put in your base. Those reasons are more validation to make a base than any reason available in Starbound. Starbound is a game about exploration and planetary survival. Minecraft is a game that is basically just a block building exercise and Terraria's building is much more one dimensional, and the game can be sped through much quicker. I was end-game on the Xbox version in two days.

In Starbound, because it's about science fiction and planetary conquest (supposed to be), there is a presedence set for colonization but there are no practical uses (or methods) for doing this. A base in a game about traveling to planets and exploring them should have more use for building. Machinery needs power sources, we need a way to generate power.

I seem to have forgotten that NPC's needed houses in Terraria. I suppose that it a very good reason to build in the game, though honestly i just shoved them all in boxes. I will admit that there is currently no practical purpose to building in Starbound, but the tools you have to do so are much more convenient, therefore giving the player more incentive to actually do it.
Not to say there will be no reason to build in Starbound. Hopefully in the future there will be even more reasons than in Terraria to build something that actually has some kind of function.

I'm hoping (I've said this like 10 times, forgive me but it's important in my opinion) that there is going to be a mod released that is very similar to Minecraft's Towny plugin.

    https://code.google.com/a/eclipselabs.org/p/towny/wiki/HowTownyWorks

Groups created by players who can then assign ranks, invite people, claim land, start towns and nations and everything requires an upkeep of currency to maintain. This would give us much more reason to build in multiplayer. I think that with the power source suggestions together would eliminate peoples' issues with building being useless.

It would be nice to visit tier 10 planets and find mobs that are noticeably more menacing/bigger/scarier or something like that. All the mobs are fairly interchangeable and I swear I'm seeing some of the same ones at different level planets.

It's almost exactly the same except that you only have one world, so it's far more linear. You mine and get ores and items to make gear to walk one single path to get to the end. You might find certain upgrades for your weapons or accessories in chests but the main way to upgrade in Terraria is through crafting with found items. That is EXACTLY how it is in this game except this game has multiple worlds. It's supposed to be more about discovery and it hands you everything. The only recipes I've ever found were for food or things like chests or doors. It would be way better if you found armor and weapon recipes by discovering them in dungeons or through quests, not automatically as soon as you click a dragon tooth.

I dont feel I need to regurgitate the whole "Its an early early beta, aka not finished." thing. So Ill simply say, there is an entire forum section specifically for feedback, and suggestions. The ideal place to put this so you dont get filled with people complaining about it is there, where its supposed to go.

I agree 100% Starbound isnt at all about blazing through to "get to the end" its about taking the time to explore the many worlds, find the secrets and neat little things through all the stages, then when you feel like it, upgrade and move onto the next area and explore some more. This is exactly how a sandbox game should operate, its about the journey not the destination. If you just blazed through to the end and now youre bored well Im sorry but thats your hang up and you missed out on so much neat stuff to see.

If you play games as a simple gear grind, then Im sorry to say youre a very narrow minded and bland gamer. Starbound, like FarCry, GTA. Red Dead Redemtpion, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, they all give you exactly what you put into them, if you just gear grind and rush to the end, then yeah youre going to get a cut and dried game that appears boring, but if you take your time and put effort into making the adventure, then you will get so much more out of the experience

That only just causes #2 to repeat. Does not change the cycle one bit.

The only way to break the cycle is make gear and bosses non linear. So there is no "Ultimate" gear.
Each gear having advantages & Disadvantages.

Stronger armour --> heavier -> Slower character --> lower jump --> easier to drown --> higher cold resistance
Weaker Armour --> lighter --> much faster character --> Higher jump --> Easy to swim --> Does not over heat.

etc. Though this is just a very basic 2 prong example.

Man, the battles! Why can't we all just get along!

    Well here's why:

    1. Critics name their threads
"The reason Starbound is doomed to fail"
"The seventeen things I can't stand about starbound."

Automatically sets the fanboy's teeth on edge. Forces people into a defensive stance, ultimately divisive. These threads could easily be named things like:
    "A possible direction for Starbound"
"Some changes I've been thinking about to the game - what do you think?"

something like this would go a long way to creating a meaningful discussion rather than a pitched battle

    2. "It's a beta! Read the phases thread!" are not constructive answers to criticism. People who are quick to jump back with this need to learn to take the criticism of the game less personally. Maybe you're right, maybe they're just raging against the beta-ness of the game. Search through the post objectively and find potential discussion topics instead of automatically dismissing it because of the way the person presents their argument. The OP had some rather nice ideas, and some decent thoughts about the game now. Of course he doesn't know about the current direction of the game, but he has some thread-worthy opinions, lets talk about those instead of the endless banter.

Or, you know, you could keep typing "It's a beta." Might as well keep it on your clipboard cause it's gonna keep coming.
