Dwarf fortress is good because of its content, depth, and complexity, not because of its graphics. I use a graphics mod, which makes its like an early NES rpg graphics wise. It was hard to learn to play DF, but it was worth it.

 

Or an apt use of a double negative.

I guess the theme here is: It all depends on your perspective.

I've even tried it with graphics mods and that complexity is just a bit too overwhelming for me.

I'll tell you what I do like about DF: The stories of the game play.The chaos in it is fascinating. I've read and heard some tales that make me try it again and again once or twice a year. No dice; I just can't hack it.

 

That is absolutely the best part of DF. In what other game can I say "Oh no, a bogeyman bit off my right arm, causing me to drop my shortsword! I better throw my blood at it until it dies."

I feel the #1 problem with DF is the interface. I think the interface is what breaks people as it is so un-intuitive it boggles the mind. I have the interface ingrained in my muscle memory. I don't actually know how to place a clothiers shop from memory, but if I start playing the game I can just do it instantly.

Yep, that is the most glaring issue, as the interface is not consistent, and is also nearly impenetrable without several guides telling you how to proceed. Other players will defend the interface, not me though, it is god awful. Unfortunately, the developer of the game feels it would be a waste of time fixing it right now, as some of those systems may be completely revamped in the future anyway. I see his point, as he does not think of this game as anywhere near done. Usability is not the goal at the beginning of development, functionality is. The game still doesn't simulate everything that he wants it to. It already brings my CPU to its knees though, so I worry/am excited for the future.

 

Who cares about looking silly? CF is running a business, and pretends to be a competent publisher as well. The handling of the Early Access system doesn't show that. If they want to stay profitable and keep their reputaiton/fans, thinking about such details is important to prevent blow back.

I also think its weird there's been a lack of substance. They could at least update with something a little more than a few bugfixes. They promised content and even patches everyday, but instead nothing. Weird. Give us something, even if its one or two simple tools. Theres so many little things they could give us updates on. For example: chainsaw.
