they're probably deadly robots disguised as trees, waiting for their chance to kill the player.
Or just randomly generated trees, who knows.

The thing about these metal trees is the background doesn't appear to match them.

 

Well, the game is still a WIP so I guess that could be accidental?
I don't know, maybe its ONLY the trees that are metal and not the planet...

 

Every other tree type in the video matches the background, I think it's just hard to get background trees that would look right in that metal style... Doesn't mean it's not going to happen though.
Or maybe it's the leaf type, on another planet it has those droopy leaves and no background trees.
The metal tree planet at 0:50 is hard to tell on the background, and the droopy leaf planet at 0:54 has those unmatching background trees.

Anyways they help provide a varied atmosphere between planets, so they're pretty good.

 

I think the bigger question is: What will they drop? Could you even harvest them? Also, just throwing this out there, even if its unlikely: What if they aren't trees at all, but ruins of the foundations of some sort of space station or base? It looks like moss has grown up the sides, and the branches kinda look like pipes.

 

If there are robot trees, does that mean when you cut them down they give you metal instead of wood? If this is the case we better have laser saws.

Laser saws? Not enough. I cut down my metal trees with orbital strikes.

 

This could start to get massively confusing if all the different tree types drop different types of wood and the like.

I cut everything with orbital strikes. Including my hair.

 

Oh god, and people started getting upset when Minecraft came out with 4 types of wood
Just imagine the complete chaos...

 

Wood better be worth some serious cash, I think my whole inventory is gonna be full of it....

 

I can just imagine the possibilities when it comes to the resources various trees give when you chop 'em. woods & bolts, different components even for manufacturing all sorts of things

 

If the different wood theory is correct, there better some machine that makes them all the same.

While they may not actually be robot trees, i personally think that would be a rather awesome idea.

I mean think about it, you're minding your own business, cutting down trees, when you come across a rather suspicious looking one that ends up reaching towards you with its metallic branches, opening a set of metal claws, only to grab you and toss you away.
