Like many, i don't see the appeal.
This community certainly seems more accepting of non-hardcore playstyles. Very different from those fellows in New Eden.

I'm fine with a hardcore mode; I'll just never use it. Cater to everyone, I say. Give hardcore mode to the hardcore players, and easy/casual modes to the casual players. Everyone is happy, and if you don't like the mode, don't play it. It all works out well.

It's great to have the choice. Let's cater to all tastes. Mind you I wint probably use it. I lost my gold pickaxe in lava once. Cried for a week!

I like perma-death, but that's not because I'm a masochist that enjoys punishment or anything... Losing the character feels awful to me just as much as it feels for anyone.

But I enjoy the thrill I feel every time I'm in a risky situation.

KNOWING that death means the end makes the game a lot more intense.

Well that's neat. I'm still going to stay the hell away from permadeath since I know I'm bound to get killed by things outside of my control, but it's good to see them appealing to the more hardcore players.

Yeah and not everyone likes hammering nails through their genitals, but I've seen people do it.

Some people are f***ed up. Not my problem.

There's only ONE GLARING PROBLEM with 'drop your stuff on death' :

    Your Matter manipulator.

If you have nothing to make any tools to cut wood or crack rocks, how are we going to be able to shrug off our death? Especially if we don't have enough materials stored somewhere, and god know that happen fairly often in early game.

Sure, you could tell me "Well, just delete your char and start again", but it just seems like bad design to me.

EDIT : Okay i just noticed you couldn't drop your matter manip'. If dying doesn't drop it, then i'm fine with that.

I generally prefer softcore, as death penalties aren't really meaningful difficulty. If I weren't on my phone I'd explain more fully, but suffice to say artificial time sinks are of little interest.

That said, I do enjoy permadeath after having played through a game normally a few times.

Once I've accomplished everything on one character, losing a new character is of little consequence, but trying to see how far I can make it before a death can be pretty fun.

It just adds some extra longevity and replay value.

i personally think i will play the "drop all your stuff" version...

i like permadeath games like ToME, Project Zomboid and Dont Starve but for me personally it would be to hard in a game like starbound or terraria.
even more as long as everything isnt really balanced yet. but dropping my stuff is nice.. so i have to care a little at least

and i am also sure they will find a way so you wont drop you matter-manipulator.. otherwise it could be game over if you have all your stockpiled stuff on you homeplanet and then die
without even having enough resources to make an simple axe and no fuel inside your tank..

I would love this game mode. I think death is not punishing enough, but it might be too punishing, seeing as most players die a few times on their first day. I would love this as an optional feature, and maybe even a perma-death mode for the pros.

That's a good point. Maybe it could be like Terraria, where you respawn with basic tools.

That is going to be excited, I love getting punished (for failing in a game) and would really appreciate some hardcore mode with permadeath. God all these ideas for potential characters. Those without having the luck of a cloning device and a backup of their personality on their ship. Those without reincarnation (Avians, Florans) or an assembly line (glitch). This is going to be fun ^^

Thanks for the immage btw, I was eating while reading this... Now I have EXACTLY this weird immage of some people hammering nails through their... in my head, specialy since you said you saw people doing it.
However if it was meant metaphorically then good job on that. The immage is VERY vivid. Sorry just had to point that out ^^

Dropping items on death would stop the deathporting and gets you to make sure you have a way out as well as a way in to anywhere. Permadeath in a game based on dicking around is completely counter-intuitive though. But hey, options are nice.

I will most likely play Medium all the time- the " 'drop yo shit when you 'splode and die" mode. Makes the storing of goodies and ore-mining more valuable, and makes you think more about what you carry with you.

I agree that the only thing that should stick with us is the Manipulator; maybe in addition to moving crap around it also somehow retains your soul which allows you to respawn. I guess in that case it would be non-matter-manipulation!

I thought the annoying and frustrating parts in a game were half the reason why it was hard...
Dropping your stuff can mean the whole world, specially if you're already quite advanced. Imagine having to farm all the materials you need both to craft and upgrade - all your armor and tools, it goes beyond a mere "inconvenience". In a sense, it would be like starting all over again specially if you didn't took special precautions (i.e storing some of it in a safe place.)

Care to explain what do you consider a "real" hard mode then?

On a side note, the hardcore mode will great for "Let's Plays" and challenge runs among friends.

I'm happy to see options, Gives players the chance to choose how difficult they want to play. I usually always have a hardcore character in games so this suits me well.

Better AI, bosses do different moves, less materials per planet, can't build blocks under certain conditions. I could come up with more I'm sure.

A single life can be challenging to a certain degree, but things are still the same, you just have to start over every time you die, which means that individual challenge is meaningless. As for dropping all your items, that's just annoying. I suppose to some it might be challenging, but to me, the game is the same no matter what and the only challenge is how much time you want to spend. I call that artificial difficulty because at no point are you actually challenged more in any of the modes by the content, only spending more time on it.
