So, hardcore mode...

I know, but we are using the exact same 3 difficulty modes that Terraria has:

Softcore: Drop some of your money
    Mediumcore: Drop your items
    Hardcore: literally yolo

Not that many games have this system afaik.

I don't mind that Starbound uses the same system because there's not many options on offer for difficulty in a game like this.

theres no reason for it not to work with these kind of games, it all depends on how you play, i honestly can't wait to try hardcore mode.

me and my friend both lost a barbarian level 60 paragon 5 and 6 or 7 respectively due to lag...my friend died because he was reckless and then i died because i was alone to fight a stupid mob with "forgot the names but it was with multiple mobs, fast and lightning" good times...lol

The delete character on death is right up my alley.

Being forced to becareful what you do while you explore adds a whole new side of the game. If you were an explorer in space would you happily charge into an avian ruin with no care in the world? No you would not.

Not for everybody, but for me its perfect.

Glad to see the PVP option, and looking forward to creating a new character just for Hardcore!

This is going to be so awesome, I will have to fight every fight knowing that it very well could be my last; that inner feeling knowing that I cannot have room for anything but a good destiny is what will be sweet. Thanks so much Devs.

i like the 3 modes. Only losing a percentage of your pixels isn't a real punishment, especially in later game. Losing all your stuff is better, because you have to use chests and be prepared for death. But there should be an easy way to get at least a matter manipulator after you died.

Options are always a good thing but-

It seems a tad cut and paste as others have said. Maybe this is a case of if its not broke don't fix it, but.. I am a little surprised this is all they are doing in regards to it.

Like the idea. Sure its nothing new and was implemented in several games before, not only terraria, but some decisions or designs are just good, so they get used often.
However, personally i probably wont give "drop everything" and "permadeath" a try before the game has matured some more balance-wise.

Hardcore in this game is a mixed bag because your starting planet is always random so if you spawn and then a meteor shower hits, well game over.
Or you might get ambushed by THOSE GOD DAMN BIRDS! GET AWAY FROM ME!

it seems a little too extreme for my liking, i try my best not to die anyways, but sometimes with the meteors and monsters knocking you back into lava, a death cant be helped no matter how hard you try. will have too see how it balances out. ofc im not forced to use the new dificulty settings, but the current one is too easy, and the newer ones seem too hard, i hope they can find a more balanced mode for a none hardcore player like myself, i dont like it easy mode dont get what im saying mistaken. but losing all your items, or your character seems a little... ott...

Deleting your entire character has been around since the roguelike genre was invented. Dropping all of your items was made standard by MC way before Terraria entered active dev.

Hell, if money weren't an item like it is in MC (that is, Emeralds) I wouldn't be surprised if that was introduced as an easier mode earlier in the dev cycle.

As a Dev I hate permadeath. Item drops I can live with I guess. I will not be playing permadeath mode. It just leads to rage. I play games not for the uber realism of having one life and severe punishments but for fun (which permadeath kills for me)!

But some people seem to love permadeath and huge punishments like dropping all your crap, so it's awesome to put in the game. I just won't use it myself. :zombie:

    Whatever floats your boat.

    Excellent!

I am not sure how much I'd use the hardcore mode. Well, Big Crunch, I believe it was called, unless it's changed since I watched the developer stream. But to have the choice there is excellent. And it might somewhat alleviate the whining about casuals forcing their casualness onto the harcores (and vice versa). An actual built-in difficulty

This is not directed at you, per se. More a general point against that... Er... Point. :p

In terms of difficulty that changes the penalty, there really isn't any option other than what we have here. Well, perhaps with the exception of a lossless death (no pixels being dropped either). But aside from that, it really is all you can do in terms of penalty. Therefore, I'd say it's not really copying.

Having said that, tweaking the pain dimension of the difficulty could also have been done. Think TES multipliers... You know, the harder the difficulty the more damage the player takes and the less they damage, compared with easier difficulties where this is reversed. I would say that it'd be awesome to have a dual-difficulty system, but this would likely confuse the interface.

Speaking of confusion, I am calling it now:

I wish the "mediumcore" (drop items on death) would leave a Diablo-style body/gravestone (without a despawn time limit) that would allow you to run back to your corpse and recover your items.

(Or perhaps make body despawn once you leave orbit - giving you a choice of either fighting to recover your body with what you have at your disposal, or flying off and forfeiting the opportunity to do so).

This would be a good balance for me in terms of challenge and fairness. Unlike softcore, which has pretty much no significant death penalty (especially since the Voxel update), but also give you a chance to recover from your mistake, unlike existing mediumcore which can be extremely punishing on upper tiers, after you scouted half the universe to get a bunch of rare items (especially if they are not craftable/printable).

Those who want an extreme challenge or bragging rights, will pick hardcore (wipe character on death) anyways, so I don't see a lot of people using the existing mediumcore (which is almost as punishing). My suggestion would make it a fairer challenge to more players.

You can run back and pick up your items. You have 5 minutes to do so.
if you need more time, change "defaultTimeToLive" in items\ defaultParameters.config.

Seems kinda silly to me in a game where all stuff is stored locally and you can edit or copy/paste it so easily. Kinda like adding a perma-death option to Gary's Mod or something... if you're only holding yourself accountable and it can't impact or be validated by other players then you might as well just delete your character folder when you die instead. No harm no foul though; whatever floats yer boat.

Id like if the hard mode did something to combat, resources and so forth. Like having less ore and mobs have more hps but dont do more damage just take more to kill them. Could add a ton more of the mini bosses as well. The main story bosses would have other abilities and a longer fight with more damage done. "Hard" isnt what you drop on death or perm die, as it doesnt change anything about the mechanics of the game it just makes you play more conservative / paranoid and pray that no bugs or lag or internet issues screw you over.
