6 or 7 that come into contact with one another that is.

In fact, really, 7 races contacting one another within the universe, even given faster than light speed travel, is so incredibly improbable that it's amazing.

There's a very good chance that there is many many many intelligent races out there. But how many of those are going to last very long at all? And of those who do, how many will achieve civilization? and of those how many will achieve space flight, and of those, how many will achieve technology necessary for faster than light space flight.

And of those, how many will by a trillion to one chance happen across an inhabited planet?

Science fiction is a wonderful fantastic genre that has the ability to enjoy both realism and fantasy.

As such, it can allow for these statistical miracles to occurr, that said however, to say that it not happening more times is a weak idea, strikes me as rather odd.

Also I do beliieve TvK is a moderator rather than a dev, they could very well still be informed, I don't know, but I do know the roles tend to be very different and as such may leave them with a relatively similar level of knowledge of things to come as us.

Whole hearted agreement, the level of modding people are capable of doing on starbound is incredible, and the number of creative and skilled people doing it is equally so.

The way you worded it too strikes me as spot on, "A sturdy reliable base for lore, characters, worlds, environments, quests, etc" this is exaaaaactly what I want them to do, then, should I want more, I can build any new features I want in the game from that, personalizing it however I see fit. Rather than make everyones personal game experience at once, because of the modding community they can make a a solid and well designed base that everyone can then change and add to to make it their own.

    Aeon and Zouleena like this.
  3. I'd say, leave the races as they are and do not add more post novakid. The modding community is on top of the race mods and adding whatever they deem "cool." Adding more races will only complicate the lore and muddy up the story.

True enough I suppose, but considering the fact that already one of the races suggested is already planned to be implimented into the game, and that other racial suggestions are garnering similar amounts of support, so I just felt like voicing a concern about it all. And the general idea of more races as a whole tbh.

...Also in the case of league of legends, I'd honestly like to just mention that in many cases the people suggesting ideas for that game care considerably more about the games lore than the developers do.

Lore in league of legends has been on a steady decline for a goooood long time now.

For some reason the moment you mentioned a clean 3 x 3 square all of a sudden it didn't seem that unnapealing...DAMN MY INSATIABLE LUST FOR NEAT GEOMETRIC SHAPES.

I do support the idea of 'interesting aliens' though, but my still present fear of lore danger will keep me somewhat on edge in days to come.

But I guess that's the price I pay for becoming heavily invested in an incomplete lore....again...

See, while I think "Discovering a new race" mightn't be bad the first or second time, after the third time of "A brand new race suddenly entering the fray" strikes me as...well somewhat less than ideal, it's still better than the shoe horning, you're right there, but it still could lead to some rather stale introductions.

Just to point out sir, that you have quite the dapper raptor as your avatar. While not technically a furry, it's definately anthro.

...My...my specific issue isn't furry races...it's really not...everyone seems to think it is because I mentioned it in the post but I was really just saying so out of amazement and confusion.

The only reason I've talked about it at all past the original post was because that's the only part 90% of the responders payed any attention to in the first post.

As to the rest of your post though, I'm just a little curious as to how having lots of races translates into being more like terraria, which did not have any racial selection?

I am actually a huge fan of terraria and dont honestly see how that relates to it at all...my favourite part of terraria was going about, collecting vast numbers of weapons and armour and fighting bigger and badder dudes...I actually didn't do too much building past making my home base in a tree with those floating island teleportation rigs to cross the map...

Also wouldn't skyrim have had more rpg elements? It gives actual like..personal choices as to who you align with, what race you are, what skill you have, what choices you make, who you defend, why you defend, it actually puts you in the role of your character and lets you flesh them out. Terraria didn't really have that, past the choice in how and what you build, everyone was playing effectively the same game, just with different weapons on occasion.

I'm not sure if you and I are on the same page when it comes to the definition of role paying game.

But I do see your point anyway, and yeah, I can imagine there would be a divide like that, considering how similar the same is to terraria and yet how differently it stands, leaving people torn as to what they want to get from it in the future.

Stiiiilll not against anthropomophic or furry things here, as I have said before. I think they're fine, check my other posts to see why I mentioned the part about the furry ideas.

Though, I will still mention the reason standard furry characters aren't my thing, is NOT because they're people like animals, but because they're mammals generally, which I have been morally opposed to since I was a child, because I liked lizards and in all the kids shows ever, lizard creatures were shown as were bad guys to be beaten by the good guy mammal creatures. And the ones that aren't mammalian tend to be too generic for my liking. (You may be pleased to know however, that in the full picture of this dapper raptor, it is riding a rather dapper bicycle. And actually kinda surprisingly enough, is not terribly anthromoprphic, but I do see your point, heck, I play argonians in skyrim for heavens sake [and happen to also really rather enjoy their incredibly fun lore and the history of the marsh in general])

Plus anthro raptors totally dont count, cause they're secretly...well I guess I shouldn't say.

    Illuminati and all that.

But let me tell you, think twice before you buy popcorn at the movie theatre next time. :proper:

    ...honestly? I tried, I just...I couldn't make myself do it...it was too boring...That's just a personal opinion though. I just wasn't interested.

I'm actually all for personal headcanons and whatnot, the ability to create your own race, lore and personal creations, I love that idea, I just feel that, as I said before, the base game should be that, the base with which everyone can create their own world on.

With it's own intricate story and context with which the player can enter and participate in, and if they so wish change.

I just dont think too much should be put in 'so that everyone can have something designed perfectly for them' when people are just going to personalize it for themselves anyway. It just means the base game will become less stable as a base.

'course I've already said this and at this point it's probably just making me sound more persistantly stubborn than I already am, so yeah, probably gunna leave that line of discussion there.

I like to think that starbound is the canvas of which we inscribe our dreams upon. but you are missing most of the paint colors, simply put the games potential will only increase as we go along the path of development. i of course would very much like a built in editor that allows you to create just about anything. much like a built in mod creator of some sort.

Hah, I didn't explain myself very well - sorry! (And I didn't mean anything about the furry race thing - I was just summing up your standpoint on superficial suggestions.)

Terraria didn't have any racial selection, but it didn't have any depth (i.e., lore), either. That's what I meant. People that want superficial races (just a wolf race, just a cat race, etc.) would be more inclined toward superficial sandbox (Terraria) type gameplay. People that want lore-intensive and original races (the gem race, and such) would be more inclined toward heavier RPG (ES) type gameplay.

    Just wanted to clarify!

I agree that a race editor would be a great addition, but a very difficult addition to implement.

Your restricting lore to what is available to you now. In this game we already have the evolution of ape, bird, plant, robot, aquatic and ...people from the stars along with humans. We also have a mapped universe. Look, I haven't concerned myself with Starbound lore, it's just not my thing. If they decided to narrow it down to 3 races, I could really give a rats. Mods will allow me to have the universe I want even if the dev's decide against it.

Here is what I do know. When apes, birds and plants figure out how to travel space, I will just take the big ol' assumption that galactic travel is just a thing. A simple story in the lore of this world can fix that (robots original intent was to explore the universe and educate the intelligent races of the universe....until they got a mind of their own. Just like that I resolved your entire issue and it took me all of 5 seconds to come up with such a brilliant idea).

When a few forum moderators (I called them dev's, whatever) express their opinion on what they want, I tend to listen. Again, I have no concern over how many races are in the game and I also understand that mod's opinions mean squat. But I couldn't help to shift my line of thinking after reading their comments as there is more to come. Those comments shifted my focus from Terrarria to something like Star Wars or Trek.

And yes, I just listed the two biggest sci-fi franchises in the history of histories that have more than 7 races, which are intelligent, that lasted a long time, achieved civilization, achieved space flight AND achieved tech neccessary for faster than light space flight. By all means, go to where ever their fansite forums are and raise the topic that any more than 7 races within their universe was a weak idea that struck you as strange and odd. Get back to me with the results of those discussions.

The lore will always have to be changed to accommodate new races. You cant just slot in new things without changing something else.

Look at the Novakid. They will be here come release but the lore makes no mention of them. The same would go for any new races Chucklefish thinks would be good to add in.
