So after having a quick look at the suggestions forum

In particular the racial sub forum, I must say, I am honestly hoping no more races get introduced post novakid.

I'm kinda worried about:

a) The lore being spread too thin among the different races, trying to give all the kids a turn on the story swing, or inversely, only paying attention to the races deemed 'important' leaving the other races to sit in the sandpit of shame.

b) The scarily high number of furry races being requested, despite the lack of creativity involved.

c) The number of races being suggested, not because they'd fit in the context or be a good addition story or theme wise, but because someone thought it'd be 'totally cool to play as <x>!!'.

d) Story wedging, where parts of the history so far will be broken, warped or just forced in a whole new direction to add in the new story of these other cool characters that are about to arrive.

While I'm sure the writers and designers and whatnot will be intelligent enough to not do this sorta thing, I still worry because, as much as I'd like people to feel like 'there is a race for them' like I personally feel for the floran, I dont want to feel like the rest of the game is being comprimised so that every player can feel like their thematic tastes are being perfectly catered to.

 

I think the game is fine with the races it has now. The modders will add more races for those who wants more races.

 

As you say with a), I doubt we'll see many more official races added any time soon simply because the amount of lore dialogue and content that is needed to flesh out each race.

The mod community is proving very efficient at creating new races, so people have modding to turn to if they want yet more races; especially races of the furry persuasion which often require little more than a new head sprite and a tail; obviously officialy endorsed races have to have a tonne more depth and content added than a simple mod since the race must seat itself within the established canon and it must be up to quality control standards

 

There are already 42+ race mods as of this posting.
I agree they should not add any more past novakid.

 

All I want is races that aren't just humans with animal heads, because that's basically what most race suggestions and mods are atm.

 

And most of them don't even have interesting lore.

 

The races currently seem fine for me, the story needs more work so that the player can find more out but I like the whole gathering codex's to discover more about the other races too.

As for modding, give it a few weeks or months and we will have a huge selection of races from Jedi to Kerbans. Give it time.

 

I agree that there should be no new races after the novakids. People should stop posting these suggestions because apparently they can't keep their damn furry fetish under control.

Devs should focus on the story and features that are yet to implement. Leave this sort of stuff like races to modders.

Now had a quick look at the suggestion forum. First thing I saw was a freaking kangaroo race suggestion.

Ha--after I bought the game and started looking at the races, I immediately thought "Wow, if I ever go on a public server, gonna have to deal w/ some reeeeaaal strange encounters."

 

I dunno, your attitude is pretty shitty right now. Maybe you should check yourself before going around insulting an entire fandom.

 

There's nothing wrong with them. They simply like something that is out of the norm. Being entitled is a matter of personality.

 

The irony might actually be that they're not asking you to do anything different, but you're the one sounding entitled and intolerant making broad inflammatory statements towards an entire group of people (a group you can avoid pretty easily if you wanted to).

The only furries I've ever met were were some steampunk furries at Dragoncon, and they were very nice. Eccentric? Definitely, but they were polite and nice (and hella RP).

when you first enter the forum, so just be nicer in general, and more people will listen to what you have to say and give you the same respect you've given by being polite and courteous.

 

From what I find the only actually annoying furries kind of keep it to furry forums and tumblr. Most of the furries here are pretty tame (hehehe), but - much like a large amount of the starbound community - can be a bit childish.

Now otherkins on the other hand, those guys could actually have issues.

 

Let's ignore the obvious troll people, just report'em and move on. As for the topic itself, I do agree that Novakids should be the last race added. Although, the furry comments are a little confusing considering that the majority of the races can be considered furry...

 

a) From what I've read so far it's all good and personally I think there could be as many races as they possibly want, I don't care - just make it all logical, well written and I will be happy. It's always good to have more choice anyway over what kind of character/personality you want to play and identify as.

b) There are some good ideas out there, it's just the matter of good writing and good ideas put together.

c) Check out stuff like Ghostar's Gemétoile race idea, personally I think it's FREAKING AWESOME. It just depends on the race creator, naturally some will be better or worse than the others but you should not be judging by your personal preference imho.

d) These new races/characters should tie themselves into the lore and story of Starbound, not the other way around.

You're just overthinking this.

 

I could see a lot of people who would be a bit annoyed at you implying that all furries are the ones "sexually" interested in other species.

I've received a lot of art commissions as an amateur artist from furries of varied sort. And generally.... they've generally been much more respectful than many of the nonfurries I've dealt with. And generally were unafraid to pay more when needed.
Yes there are a certain amount of them who are fetishist. But you know what? So does even more "conventional" fandoms. If humanity taught me anything is that we're apparently one of the whackiest species I've ever heard of.

But this said? Most of the folks who commissioned me generally couldn't care less about NSFW stuff and their interest is pretty much the same reason one like cyborg characters in a movie, or like one genre of art or games in particular. It's often either because they liked cartoons which involved characters with anthropomorphic animals in it(i.e.: mickey mouse, bugs bunny, do I need to go on?) or just the concept in general. Or you know, just "because it look cool" and/or they like a particular type of animals.

Heck, at Angouleme's international comic book festival(a place where the freaking president of france at the time once spoke to talk about his perception of the place of comics in france's own culture where they are often not far from the movie industry in perception and genres unlike the "geek-exclusive" and superheroes-centric nature of comic in the US) one of the series who once got the price for "Best art in a new series" was Blacksad.

Yes there are a lot of creeps who seem to be all about the porn within that fandom. But as experience taught me? You'll have creeps everywhere else as well.
