So, about the races...

There is a Monkey/Simian race, the Apex, that is highly technologically and intelectually advanced. They are part of a "tech" group.
There is the plant life, Florian, which is extremely tribal, bound to nature, and aggressive. They're part of the nature group.
The Avians are also tribal to some extent, and even with some technology, they keep to their tribal natures. I think they are either in the nature group, or in a new group... that i can't really put a name on. Wind, maybe.
Novakids are completely different from all other races, so i'd say they deserve a sepparate group anyway. Space/Star group.
The glitch... Hoo, i like them. Medieval robots. While they could be included in the "tech" group just for being robots, i'm not sure what else they could be bundled with.
The Hyotl are more interesting than i gave them credit at first. [the character creation didn't tell me much, haha] So, an aquatic race with oriental aspects. Let's bundle them in "water" group for now.
And then, there are the humans. Because yeah, a game almost always need 'em boring humans. I'm not sure where to put them, but considering space travel is default, they go into a lower level of the Tech group.

With all that said, we have 3 races in the tech group, one of them being medieval. Two races being on the nature group, one of them being bound to the air in a way. One race in the water group. And one race bound to space itself.

Surprisingly, there isn't a race that is bound to the ground itself. You know, digging and all. Of course, they'd have to go to other planets if their own planet's resources was exausted. Yes, a highly predatory race in a way.

Was there any discussion about this?

 

Glitch are a viable candidate for the 'Ground Group', because their Racial Armor Set Bonus is +Mining Speed.

Personally, if ya had to 'group' the Races, i'd go:

• Apex: Tech
• Floran: Nature
• Avian: Religious
• Novakid: Space
• Glitch: Ground
• Hylotl: Water
• Humans: Mundane

indeed. I would like to know more about the background story of the humans. I've looked and haven't found much...

I'm going to play as the humans because not many people from what I have seen are playing as them.
But I'm sure ill have at least one of each character.

 

I could almost create one of my completely unrelated characters with one of the races. I only need to find out what are the types of weapons that can deal fire damage~ :B

After thinking--and reading material--about us, I have come to the conclusion that we only think we are boring because what we do is normal to us. However, when you consider some facts about our species, we become frightening. For instance, we breathe oxygen, and it is the second most reactive element on the periodic table (which makes it almost as dangerous as fluorine.) When compared to most animals on our planet, we are tireless and incredibly persistent; making us masters of pursuit predation. Also, we are a violent and aggressive species whose history is stained in blood.

We might look quite scary to a creature that has never seen or heard of us before. But they might look scary to us as well. I think NightfFire may have the right idea.

Just thought I would point this out because most people think humans are really boring, but they may not be considering how we might look from another creatures perspective.

 

Apex: Science/Technological
Floran: Ecological/Tribal
Avian: Religious/Spiritual
Human: Militaristic
Glitch: Industrial/Production
Novakid: Colonial/Exploration (Cartography, maybe) Nomadic, they could be a few things. This is all based of their choice of clothing.
Hytotl: (This ones a toughy) Since they're outfits are inspired by some oriental cultures, We could assume the Hytotl society was ruled by an Emperor/ Emperess. Therefore we could consider them Imperialistic.. I'm just not completely sure with them.

That's how I view the races anyway

 

I'd say apex are militaristic, similar to soviet/cold war era russians.

I see apex as one of the most diplomatic species also one of the most advanced in everything while Russia is more advanced in...alcohol also I don't see Russia as the friendliest I think the only thing they would have in common is communism(but Russia is good at making dem nuclear warheads )

The Apex devolved their bodies to further evolve their minds, which demonstrates their commitment to knowledge. They're clearly a species highly influenced by science.
Human kind has always been pretty aggressive, and up until the past few centuries, rather barbaric. We're actually a terrifying race, as a few have said before me. More so than not, humans have settled their differences with blood shed rather than diplomacy. I'll use the Humans in "James Cameron's Avatar" as an example for how I see the human race in Starbound... but maybe a bit less... dickish.

The Apex are based on Ingsoc/ the nation of Oceania in George Orwell's 1984, which would randomly bomb neighboring countries at random times in random locations for no reason other than to use the bombs up so that they could build more bombs, for the economy. If you didn't follow the rules of Big Brother and the Party, they would torture and/or kill you. They were about as far from diplomatic as any nation could possibly be. The Planet of the Apes used a similar setting and themes.

EDIT: It is worth mentioning that this is just the government and general culture of the race. I don't think any of the races have an underlying nature-- people are whatever they choose to be and aren't just doomed to be destructive/barbaric/etc...

 

And you'd be completely wrong as evidenced by the following image alone.

Doesn't look like the abode of the most diplomatic and advanced race in the Galaxy. More like Soviet Russia.

I see humans being portrayed as the typical technologically advanced sentients with the Apex as the oppressed militaristic species.

 

I don't think any of the races is really that high-tech. The Avians were given space travel by some other mysterious race, which probably created the Glitch as well. The Apex have intelligence in their favor but most of their population is an oppressed proletariat. The Florans merely steal technology, and we know nothing about the Hylotl. I'm pretty sure Humans are not far beyond current technology IRL, like they only just discovered FTL travel within the same decade that Earth was tentacle raped. The Novakid can't pass on enough knowledge to be high-tech.

Really, the only high-tech race is the mysterious unknown. For all we know, the playable races are considered to be just a bunch of failures on their part. Maybe the mysterious race even sent the tentacles to destroy their own mistakes. Who knows? I'm sure it will be a major element of the plot line.

 

I see them more as oppressive, not oppressed.

 

About other races seeing us as terrifying, yes, i can see that happening. What i mean is that from a pool of a bunch of alien races, why i'd choose human? They are what i'd be most used to, or expect something from. The other races have different societies, customs, lore and tech. It's much more interesting [from a player point of view] to explore all other six of them. But of course, there are the players who just want to make someone that's like or supposed to be themselves. Thus, there goes the human option.

Me, nope, i want to roleplay. I want unique landscapes, species, to se the worlds. *plays Alladin's song "a whole new world"*

And about the apex pic. Lol, they look like they live in the 80's or something, but still have the most advanced tech. This is funny.

 

All I see are the apex being totally nice to the human and letting one of them stay in their advanced banana hotel.
