The thing is, if a person had an assault rifle with the characteristics of a sniper rifle, then if would more or less be a sniper rifle. Unless, of course, we are still holding to the idea that assault rifles exclusively have underslung attachments. In which case, we'd have a very overpowered weapon on our hands I know weapons are procedurally generated, which is precisely why I believe [powerful] zooming should be a feature only available to sniper rifles; it would give them a clear identity, instead of them essentially being slow assault rifles with a scope. If you could equip any powerful assault rifle with a hi-power scope, then sniper rifles would have no reason to exist. If that's not what you're getting at, please explain. I truly want to elaborate as best I can on this suggestion, and every bit of information counts.
Or it could be silly like borderlands where you can get a shotgun with a scope. Doesn't affect the range though...
I may or may not have mentioned it, but scopes are accessible to every sort of weapon. None of them are near as powerful as the sniper rifles' level of zoom, but they are there nonetheless. Think something like a 12x zoom rifle scope versus something like a 1.5x ACOG. Besides zoom strengths, any other effects would be applicable to either scope, like night vision, or thermal vision. Actually, if anyone has ideas for scope effects, I'd love to compile them in the OP. Let me know, alright?
I think Sniper Rifles should work the same way as they do in the Indie game "Gang Garrison 2". It's simple enough, right clicking makes the screen move more freely etc.
This is what i imagined when i saw this thread title it would be the only true sniper idea for the game in my opinion. the whole problem with a sniper in this game is it can't be 1 shot kill, there have to be weapon stats and maybe a sway to the rifle so it becomes a challenge to make a head shot. then at that point you can make a headshot damage multiplier so at least if you're accurate you'll be rewarded with some critical damage on mobs and bosses. Maybe make snipers 1 shot headshot on zombies?
I especially like the idea of unique ammunition. Maybe also electric ammunition, that can shut off turrets, or disable generators. That could also lead to a breed of the sneaky and sniper person type.
You know, there was a fan made game for Halo, Called Halo Zero, that when you picked up the sniper rifle, when you would drag your mousesight over to the screen, you could scroll the screen a ways to shoot creatures from a lot farther away. Thus, you don't have to worry about screen zoom on an in, or out perspective, but you can just rather drag to the edge and actually see the distance defined by the capabilities of the rifle.
I think he's more or less phrasing the pan mechanic somewhat differently. I'm not entirely sure, however, so I won't speak for him.
Basically, what Ysbry said. Pan Mechanic. You drag your cursor to the edge of your screen, The camera pans out *Different scopes on the rifle mean more or less panning.* Sorry about that.
Very solid, well written, and makes a lot of sense. This idea has been Sykes approved. Similar to Alien Swarm. Ever played that?
I have not I was under the impression that it was a top-down shooter, though. How exactly does it work?
Your characters stays in the center of the screen, but if you move your mouse toward the edge, the screen will pan that direction to the point where if your mouse is on the right border of the screen, your character is now touching the left border. If your mouse is in the middle of the screen, your character is also in the center. When you move your mouse a direction, your screen pans toward that direction as well, allowing you to see farther that way. The concept can apply to 2D games as well, very much like how you described. The downside is that, if you're looking too far one direction... You can't see what's behind you.
That panning is exclusive to the sniper rifle in Alien Swarm? It's a sensible system that gives enough of a reason to use a rifle while still maintaining balance. At any rate, I don't think I could procure a better idea; top-down shooters certainly aren't my forte.
That zooming thing works like that on Soldat as well. Anyway Starbound has multi-monitor support, so I think that some people will see insane distances even without a Sniper scope... So, I'm surprised if they don't allow us to pan the camera or zoom out. I could swear I read something about zooming or panning in the past but I forgot what.
Whoa, wait, what? Seriously? Would you be able to link me to a source? It's not that I don't believe you, I just want to see where they said it.
