Snapshot command, mystery filetype?

Tried using the /snapshot command, but nothing I can find is able to view the .sbscene extension, what is the intended way to view these files?

lots of views and no responses, Guess I'm not the only one clueless on this

No clue, but it doesn't sound like intended behavior... is it the same when you use print screen? It should be saving it as a jpeg (I think) so try renaming the file and popping it open?

    Which OS are you on?

What is your reason for using that command in the first place?

  5. I'm willing to bank that the /snapshot command is more akin to some kind of playback rather than a screenshot. Sorta like when you get a recording of a game of DOTA or League. That's just my thought though, I've got nothing to back it up.

nah, it's not a recording. It looks like a step before rendering to an actual bitmap image. FYI: It's a gzip'ed file that contains the actual sbscene file. The sbscene file contains a header part with date (not sure) and size (in game blocks), then follows a part which seems to describe the back and foreground tiles. Then an embedded grayscale PNG with the size of blocks in pixel, which seems to be some kind of lightmap. And finally a part where the viewable assets and planet properties are listed.

ATM I don't see anything useful to do with these files.

I'd guess it sounds like a troubleshooting tool for the devs. Maybe if the engine had trouble rendering something, or the terrain generator did something strange and they wanted to look more into what is actually there, take the snapshot and they can look at the data behind strangeness.

Well, maybe I should have been clearer: I don't see anything useful for the players to do with these files ;)

Commands are for development use in the first place. If you want to take a screenshot, the tried and true "print screen" button.

nah, print screen is surely the least option. I was hoping for a more comfortable way to render big screenshots than to force a ridiculous big windowed mode size and take advantage of how Steam's screenshot functionality works.
