[Small Spoiler, feedback] The new SAIL "in mission" functionality.

In the current nightly (2015-04-30, 165 +1gmt) S.A.I.L makes comments and guides you during missions (at least the first mission thus far).

I love it! Absolutely love it! Whomever tough up that idea big kudos to you!

Agreed, that does look awesome, have you tried it with other races yet? i haven't gotten around to playing around with the Nightlies as of late

 

The floran S.A.I.L seems to say the same thing currently, at least with the minimum of testing i have done (just seen a few lines). (Perhaps they will make them more race specific later, or perhaps they dont see it being worth the effort).



Btw. S.A.I.L also comments outside of missions sometimes, heres a example:

 

That looks pretty neat I guess. I'm a little tired of video games doing the "friendly voice in your head-tell, don't show" thing, but I suppose it's preferable to "don't tell or show."

 

Extra flavor is always fun. I can dig it. I hope that they become more species-specific, but that's probably in the works. It would be an interesting start for time-based mini-missions on the planets' surfaces, like monster bounties or tech races, too.

 

Hopefully this is something we can mess around with when making our own missions, as well. I'd love to see how people use it, especially if it results in Portal- or Stanley Parable-esque shenanigans.

This also makes me wonder if it won't just be S.A.I.L. adding commentary to your missions - maybe our NPC friends currently on the front page will take the "Mission Control" seat for a mission or two?

 

Given we saw NPC portraits already it's rather safe to say they will probably show up in the same way

 

Yes, modders have already begun making their own, it is a very user friendly system. (Example of @Kawa's felin testing)

Yes, Nuru is already talking in the Floran mission, she currently says:

• "Welcome to the jungle. This is a test of how much text I can fit into one box. Testing one two. Three four. Five six."
• "Good luck in there!"
• "Hey, you! Over here."
• "This lever here looks like it can be pulled."
• "It might open the doors."
• "If the doors were open you would be able to progress, but they are closed. What a shame."
• "I know! I can just open them for you."
• "Whack! Good luck out there!"

Also, here is all of the AI text in the lunar base mission:

• "The mining facility looks deserted. I am receiving life readings but they're unusual to say the least."
• "The facility appears to be running on emergency power. We should look for a breaker."
• "I obtained both Erchius and human readings from these creatures. Proceed with caution.""The Erchius readings here are much stronger. Be careful."
• "RUN!"
• "I can no longer measure Erchius readings in your area, your Nano skin appears to have malfunctioned."
• "Erchius crystals are immune to conventional weaponry, you'll need to find another way to damage it."
• "There's enough Erchius here to fully repair the ship's FTL drive."

And at an ancient gateway:

• "Ancient ruins such as this can be found throughout the galaxy. I'm detecting a spatial anomaly nearby... perhaps some form of teleportation device?"

And 3 test messages:

• "Testing, testing... one, two, three."
• <yelling frame> "Are you angry, brother?"
• <boobed horse> "Hello there, dear."

I take it you are uncomfortable with this?

 

A horse AI with boobs (covered in clothing off course) was shown quite some time ago as a joke (the god damn forums exploded before they told anyone it was a joke btw).

 

That was hilarious to watch.
