But speaking on the Terraria thing, I am trying to get back to Terraria. Starbound is kinda getting boring because of all my coal mining so I can visit new planets. I do like terraria's multiplayer also, it's fun as hell with friends. But the same can be said about Starbound, if your friends have it, that is.

Because coal mining sucks (at least, I think so), here's a few tips:

Until you get to the point where you can start mining Solarium, Uranium, and SuperFuelium, build tons of forests.

Each tree you chop down (drills work, so do stone axes) drops a bunch of wood and saplings. Re-plant the saplings. Make 2-3 screens of trees on your home planet. Each time you visit the home planet, chop down the forest and replant it. This should net you about 1000-2000 unrefined wood.

Take that wood, put it in the furnace, and bake until 3 hours past "Golden Brown". 10 unrefined wood "smelts" into 1 coal. This takes a really long time in Stable, so I recommend 3-5 furnaces, and split up the stacks of wood to evenly distribute.

Now, you shouldn't ever have a problem with fuel.

While this system is effective, I think it's not fun, and (same with Tiev's points about looting and stealing) hopefully can be replaced by something that IS fun and still effective as Starbound gets closer to release!

Be careful touching villagers' chests, the female villagers get very angry. Or clingy. It kinda depends on the villager in question.

Your indepth look seems to talk about the most pointless parts of the games... i mean... do people really care about "block placement"? It comes down to what the games play like, have to offer, their re-playability and their ease of use.

Terraria is currently many times better than our Starbound, mainly because its been out for several years and had several very good and expansive patches. You are all seriously joking if you are comparing the gameplay quality and depth of Terraria to Starbound and saying our SB is better. Its simply not and thats that. Don't fool yourself into somehow believing its any other way. Terraria's combat is far more interesting and satisfying and the game simply offers so much more. Its Biomes show actual meaningful difference and exploration is rewarded. And also Starbounds "stable" version hasn't been updated in months, which is why Steam users currently very much dislike this game, understandably. There is only one area i think Starbound beats Terraria and funnily enough, its block placement. Terraria's background walls are a little tedious, but thats not a deal breaker and its not something Starbound should be boasting over when Terraria hammers it in every other aspect.

HOWEVER. Starbounds art style is simply gorgeous and, if the developers live up to their claims and the game is properly released in the next year or so, then i truly believe that Starbound could rather easily surpass Terraria in quality and quantity. I hope they do, i'm happy enough to wait, i just check the forums from time to time and see whats changed. I'd love Starbound to grow into the game it truly could be, and i hope it does.

I've been playing starbound for a bit now today while thinking of starbound x terraria. I think it comes down to Combat and Exploration. Starbound feels so empty in comparison. Combat is a bore and most the planets feel the same regardless of biome, with the exception of my modded biomes which do a better job of it, but it's only flavor not much substance. Even with dungeoneer dungeons I feel like there isn't much interesting and locations get old real fast.

At least they tried, much more dungeons to explore than Terraria. But actually, I think exploring caves in Terraria is more fun now that I think about it..

It'd be great if I could make traps in Starbound. Terraria makes it easy with a variety of tools and really lets you go wild if you're up to it. You can make landmines (traps laced with dynamite), lava traps, dart traps, and much more in Terraria. It really made the multiplayer aspect of the game entertaining for me. To add, Terraria has a lot of variety when it comes challenges. It's got some pretty challenging boss fights and their invasion system really makes the game feel complete (but Starbound IS still in early stages to be fair).

They're both really entertaining games, even more so with friends.

I think one thing Terraria does really well that Starbound should definitely imitate is the implementation of biomes. I really like how the biomes feel and look so different, when you first encounter the jungle biome the background changes as well as the music and there is an entirely different class of enemies to contend with. Same with the dungeon biome and of course the underground biomes. Hardmode expands on those even further. Another aspect I like better with Terraria biomes is the random treasure rooms and chests, somehow they feel more rewarding to find. For example in the jungle biome I really loved finding treasure rooms made of gold and a chest with a unusually powerful weapon.

The other area I think Terraria excels in is enemy NPCs. For some reason Starbound enemies still feel a little generic, they have a very similar feeling. It could be that because there is the possibility of having almost unlimited enemies they tend to be a little cookie cutter in nature (I'm hoping this will change). Whereas in Terraria the enemies were a bit more interesting, you had the goblin rushes, wyverns, man-eaters, soul eaters, worms and loads of other unique enemies. I think the bosses were really done well too, it was really amazing fighting the giant eye and Skeletron for the first time. And the hard mode versions of the same bosses rocked as well. Also the way certain ores and craftable materials were attached to the bosses made it feel like you accomplished something when defeating them.

Finally one last thing I liked about Terraria, although it may not be a big factor for everyone. I liked being able to build a big structure and NPCs would move into it making different services available. Guns, bullets, healing, powders, armor, etc.. It was a nice incentive for building a base or fortress. And although not everyone cared much about it, I liked the feature in the game.

I don't feel that I need to add too many of my own opinions or points, they've been said already.

What IS different about the two games? That they're two different games. You don't play them for the same reasons.

For example, I'm mostly a Terraria player. Have been since long before 1.0.

But I don't play Starbound looking for things to compare with Terraria. Nor do I do it vice versa.

Now, that being said, one of my favorite things to do is build. I don't like how Starbound handles it's building currently, as it just feels kind-of clunky to me. (probably because I'm used to building in Terraria and how it's physics handle)

That's not really a theory, but a common result of gaming.

Games simply become boring without something to do and even then can still become dull through repetition. New titles will draw a player away from another game especially when it stands to recreate moments of excitement experienced in similar offerings.
Content and Nostalgia can call you back but is often a small fix to fill a gap until another title comes along

IMO this is a surface comparison, not very in-depth. Real depth would be analyzing the feelings of exploration and adventure that are experience and why, not taking specific mechanics and explain why you liked one more than the other. Of course, there are advantages to analyzing the mechanics that way as well, so I'll give my two cents.

I'd say combat and equipment in Terraria is far better. Consider the most interesting weapons in Starbound: the Bonehammer and maybe a gun that shoots glowing sticky bullets. They're okay, but they really aren't so great when you compare them to the variety that was present even in just the release version of Terraria (Vilethorn, Starfury, Sunfury, Boomerangs, Water Bolt, Demon Scythe, and more). If you include all the treats in later versions, it gets even worse for Starbound. The Rainbow Gun, Bat Scepter, Razorblade Typhoon, Vampire Knives, Nimbus Rod, Ice Rod, and Summoning Staves are all awesome. The ranged combat options in Starbound pale by comparison, and although the addition of shields makes Starbound's melee more compelling, it's still a far ways from where it should be. People have mentioned Armor and Accessories already so I won't repeat it. I have more to say but I'm constrained by time.

I strongly disagree, people do play both games for the same reason. Starbound is a game that pulls it inspiration directly from Terraria. The art style is similar, so is the mining system, the crafting and even the biomes (in fact on some planets in SB there's even a heck biome). But that's not a bad thing for SB to be similar to Terraria. Terraria is an incredible game and clearly many peopLe out there want a similar gaming experience.

Man I was right about the comments going really far into this. I probs won't be playing starbound too much right now because MC 1.8 finally came out the other day and I'm really excited.

But I have to disagree with that. I personally do not play them for the same reasons at all, and nor do I feel I could GET the same experience by playing one over the other.

Regardless, people will play one or the other, or both, for their own reasons. The problem with listing differences is that a lot of it turns into opinion.

Fair points but you have to remember that a lot of things in Starbound are going to improve. Considering the quests and amount of NPC interaction coming I think it's clear Starbound will be hands down much better than Terraria in the NPC department. The crafting I don't mind too much and I do consider it slightly better in Starbound because there are plenty of places to get the ores and ingredients you need so it's easier to go up the ladder of pickaxes here than it is to simply find the gold you need in Terraria.

But let's get to the big differences, the important stuff that kills Terraria:

    1) Mods: Starbound = amazing. Terraria = none.

    2) DRM free option: Starbound = great(at release). Terraria = never.

That combined with all the other positives of Starbound basically make Terraria obsolete....a relic of the past.

In Terraria I built myself a base in the sky that was in the shape of an UFO.....and oh how I wished I could actually go places with it but alas it was never to be....not in Terraria anyway. Beyond that I was more than slightly frustrated at how low the upper limit of the skybox was. In Starbound I can make any kind of awesome ship I like and it bloody functions and I can go to all kinds of crazy alien worlds and everything is extremely awesome. I see no reason to ever look back at Terraria.....ever.
