Alright, I'll make this short and simple. The fact that hair cannot overlap the movable layer for the arms without movement screwing it up greatly limits the opportunity for hair styles in starbound. I personally have made a decent amount and just realized that some simply won't work. The simple solution to this would be to add another still layer ontop of the arms' layer that would be invisible by default. All you'd have to do is add whatever is meant to hang over the torso, arms, legs, ect ect... and tada: Problem solved. The game already works in layers as well as the character already being textured in layers. I'm sure this could be easily done. Please support this thread guys and gals! To see some examples of hairstyles that could utilize this, check out: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/floran-hair-styles-for-earth-day.19103/ http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/revised-long-hair-styles.17750/ http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/updated-pony-sprites.18215/ Long hair just simply doesn't work. In a game like StarBound, it's just not okay to have such a harsh limitation on your character. Especially since it's "Our Story" as the game once said. I also have just found that this even screws up some of the official long-hair styles due of this limitation. This seriously needs to be looked at and hopefully implemented. Examples: http://puu.sh/2GmJ6 http://puu.sh/2GmKo http://puu.sh/2GmT0.png http://puu.sh/2GmSg.png http://puu.sh/2GmVG.png http://puu.sh/2GmWc.png http://puu.sh/2GmXw.png Take note of how the hair is missing between the body and the arms in some poses which renders them broken.
I also suggest that there should be an entire layer behind the character as well for the hair so you don't have to make 1million separate textures for it when posing.
And potentially strangle yourself? Anyway, enough off-topic. I don't have any experience in coding/spriting/developing, but this sounds like i would make it easier and give more artistic freedom for hair, no?
Total bump. This would help out, a lot. This idea deserves an Official Booster Gold Star of Excellence .
This would also help tremendously for headgear. Think about it: Any sort of headgear that includes a draping feature, large veil, scarf, etc... All of those would greatly benefit from this. The only possible downside I can think of is potential issues with equipment worn on your back, like wings or air tanks, but those would probably be fine if they had both a layer behind everything and the layer in front like you suggested.
That's a very good few points; I never thought of that!~ I also think this wouldn't be too hard to implement as the game kind of already works in layers; atleast I hope... o.o
