Oh no, I understand the sentiment exactly. The lack of a cool down is pretty bad, and I was being serious about ruining the smooth metal economy. Let me clarify: For me half the fun is going out with my little group of pals and borrowing building components from people, they don't mind, they even watch us deconstruct their buildings! However smooth metal and other forms of metal blocks have always been the hardest to get as they require a fair amount of bombs and time mining. Even now if you relied only on pixel building, it would require quite some time to get enough to create a decent base. What I'm saying is: It's way less rewarding to finish a building. I'm sure soon there will be the ability to build all race blocks and such, but right now I enjoy the rewarding nature of fetching materials and bringing them home. Back to the point, I think it really does need balancing, getting enough seeds turns a home planet's surface into nightmare of cleaning up.
I don't think the point is to want to remove seeds, rather slow down their growth rate. Currently they have the ability to pretty much destabilize the game to its roots. As we speak, I was idly chatting on the forums and setting up a tree farm + furnace pit. with 10 furnaces, I can generate hundreds of coal in a rather small space. Granted not THAT bad, but requiring fuel was meant to keep you searching on planets and exploring.
I actually think there might be a planet limit on trees. I was having troubles getting my trees to reliably grow at first. I went out and cut down some of the local trees and my imported trees seemed to grow more reliably after that. I also think fetching materials and bringing them home has value which is why I think trees should spawn instead of be farmable. I also like the metal which is why I was all over the metal trees. The pic I posted is literally a tower of babel. I haven't hit the ceiling yet but I've gone past the atmospheric lighting to what looks like space and to where I'm having to place nano cookers every so many inches to keep from freezing to death in seconds. I think a spore like system would be better where you can chose which kind of trees spawn on the planets you're developing. Something like up to 3 different kind of trees. Also make that applicable to to some of the smaller varieties of plants.
Oh our muliplayer map, some joker covered half the planet with threes, with almost no gaps in between. Perhaps it's just a bug. *Edit: I obviously meant trees, but seeing how humorous I found that I'm leaving that typo. They came in Threes not fours.. or fives.
If you look at the spacing in the pic I posted, that is roughly the spacing required for them to reliably grow. any closer together than that and you will lose seeds. They just poof. You might be able to replant and replant until it gets thick but man that would take fair amount of time.
We had similar growth to as if the planet was a fairly fresh spawn, maybe it's a multilayer thing or a glitch, however it's good to know that behavior isn't intentional. Still my trees are able to grow in fairly close proximity, leaving enough space so when they grow the "leaves" don't end up overlapping.
Unless they change how trees work soon, my goal will be to find the top and bottom of the game world all in that building...lol. No they can grow close to each other, its just really unreliable and you will lose a lot of seeds doing it is my experience. I'm playing on the reddit server.
I'd just like to add I have no problem with growing trees. I'm all for it. I just think growth cycle needs tweaking. I don't think wheat takes too long. I enjoy farming and wheat is a pretty fast growing crop. Carrots on the other hand..... Putting trees somewhere between wheat and carrots would be fine with me. Keep the trees. Just make it a /little/ harder to get the 5k wood you need to fill your gas tank
