Sleeping to pass the night?

This is one thing that Minecrap actually got right and i think Starbound should have this too. There's not much you can do at night if you're ill-equipped so it's just a big waste of time waiting for sunrise. Maybe beds should only be for sleeping and there could be a separate game mechanic for resting to recover HP like how MMORPG games do. However you want to do it, it'd really be nice to pass the night quickly.

If you mean that sleeping in a bed should speed up time, i agree 100%!

I don't really care how it's done, i just want a way to pass the night when i can't really do anything anyway.

That'd be fine in single player, or even multiplayer if you were alone on the planet, but it could have widerspread effects in multiplayer ...

true, i guess that wouldn't work very well in multiplayer, but adding that along with a pause function to single player would be very welcome imo.

I thinks its a good idea too. For the multiplayer, the best thing to do is if everyone sleep you can speed the night. In that case, everyone must help the weaker one or skip the night and get better equip in the morning.

If we go along with the minecraft "influences", if more than one player is on a planet, both/all of them would have to lie in a bed before time started to pass faster.

Not everyone on a server would have to sleep, but time could be kept individually by planet

    Playing the devil's advocate though.

Its a whole new world (cue Aladdin/Jasmine) once the sun goes down.
Temps drop, causing a different style of exploration
Entirely different monsters, both hostile and docile, come out to hunt and eat.
and the environment changes, making hunting/gathering just a tad bit more difficult, requiring use of flashlights or more defensive fighting.

All in all, I actually think its GREAT that nighttime isnt a guaranteed deathwish, as it easily can be sometime in Minecraft or Terraria. Sure it makes it a bit harder, and maybe a bit more frustrating at time, but it adds a huge new element, one they can definitely expand on.

Imagine new plants or objects that only interact at night; moonblocks glowing in the dark, some form of "moonflowers" blooming and only being picked at night, certain enemies that drop items required for crafting. heck, you could make a Lord of the Ring-esque dwarven door from materials that could only show in the dark...

At first I was for the Op idea, after reading this... if there was more positive/interesting nighttime only content then it might actually encourage people to venture out at night more, so I would be in favor of the latter so that gameplay is more varied. Some mod will probably come out for those in singleplayer that want only daytime.

How about if you sleep in a bed at night it restores your HP and passes the night, and if you just want to restore HP you could just rest in a chair. I wasn't suggesting that you have to skip nights...

I like the idea of a greater risk/reward for venturing at night. However, I do like the possibility of being able to pass time quickly. It would have to be safe to do so, however.

My suggestion: treat time like in the original fallout games, where (if you're alone on a planet) you can arbitrarily move forward the time in the game. However, monsters and the environment can still affect you. So if you decide to pass time outside a safe location, you can be attacked by creatures (and "woken up"). This most likely would result in your death since you don't have the same ability to react swiftly. Similarly, if the temp drops too low or your hunger meter gets too low you get "woken up".

This leaves the bed for HP regen. Also, from a "makes sense" perspective, you can pass time when in bed to do a quick heal (from the players perspective).
