Anyway, so first, the Zapdos suffoficated in a tree mid battle, then the Moltres Swims in lava and dies and then Snowman spawns in a Zapdos that eats 90 Ultra balls (all I had) then I ask Gravik to make some more and the thing either died in lava or despawned in the meantime.

I am SO FREAKING DONE WITH THIS.

I'd recommend dusk balls, they're cheaper to make then ultras and have a higher catch rate at night, also packing a couple of timer balls in case you run out is always a good idea.

 

Timer Balls don't work, according to the Official Wiki.

Gentle, KS & I have worked on the Issues with the former Zapdos & Moltres Shrine & have made new ones elsewhere which will hopefully not have Issues with working on the attempt to catch them.

Plus, I +1 the notion of Dusk Balls + Nighttime. Dusk Balls at night & in low light areas have a 3.5x Catch Rate... Ultra Balls can only do 2.0x Catch Rate. Ultra Balls imho are for day only normal stuff like Eevees & such.

Astro, please seek KS's help for the issue that plagued ya last night.
