Terreria featured sections of land way high up in the sky. Will Starbound have the same? Do you think they are necessary? I say yes, because it would give way more exploration options.
No, because we have asteroid belts up in space. While not to say this game is realistic, it isn't as "magic magic" as Terraria, I think cloud islands would be very out of place.
True, there are asteroid "belts", more like clumps, lol. What other stuff could go there then? The devs shot down the space elevator idea, which seems shortsided. Maybe the beings of a planet have to live in elevated cities, due to pollution. How cool would that be? Wasteland surface ringed by high tech city-platforms. Epicness.
or planets that have little land but MASSIVE heights and clouds that you can walk on (with the right tech/tool... you know so you don't fall through... "...pound prt square inch...")
Actually.. Yeah, I didn't think of that one. Good point. In that case I change my mind, floating islands (done appropriately) could work on certain planets.
How about a planet that is made ENTIRELY out of metal? like Cybertron, or that metal planet from Total Annihilation. Make it so that it's HARD to dig! but every time you dig up... it's rough metal... not ore, just scrap metal... and these can be melted down... but wort less... and it only can be refined to ingots, not ores!
Also we have giant tentacles and brains growing on (mechanical) trees. right now the height of planets rarely have a point. But maybe its planned that oceanic planets may consume a lot "airspace" for the oceanic part? But they could add a lot more "air biomes" by simply putting some airships or artificially created floating islands up there. Similar to the pirate ship encounter.
