Skills, they could work.

perhaps during your adventures you can come across "combat manuals" that give you skills to use for different weapon types, axe skills, sword, shield, bow, all kinds.

I say no to skills. I say, maybe just an alternate way of swinging a weapon or using an item.
Directional torch (or flashlight) has one setting, narrow like in the video, and another setting, spread, which would light more in front of you but not as much farther away.
For swords, a slash and a stab.
Axes, a slash and a side slash?

But skills? There are too many weapons to have a skill for each and every weapon.. One extra way to use every item would be a wonderful addition, I think.
Hell, I might even make a thread for these ideas.

I was thinking along the same lines s you just described, nothing too fancy, just ways of using the weapons. A bow shot shots 2 arrows, axe dashes then swings up in an arc, sword makes a bigger slash. Nothing like a sword shooting an energy wave or something

    I agree and disagree.

    1. i agree there are too many weapons to have skills for each of them

    2. i disagree because of the concept of race based weapons/quests. what happens if your quest requires you to win a battle using the enemies weapons... do you just innately knew how to use this unique weapon or do you have to train a bit with it to use it effectively.

I am not a fan of skills. I find they force you to use a weapon, just because you have more skill at it. Its silly to punish you for using something less.

He wasn't talking about learning how to use them and maybe even more efficiently (which I think is brilliant), he meant skills like a jump and slash or power drive or something..
I'd love weapon levels, your character getting better at using certain weapons and being able to use them faster or do more damage, I honestly think THAT is a good idea.

Maybe a tech tree that can be used to discover these new skills by adding the option to customize your current gear. First you build a research building/room with equipment and NPC scientists inside. Then you give them an item to study, allowing you to either use the weapon(if it's alien to you) or adding a new feature to it(like a double jump to a pair of boots).

Well, there are going to be skills in this game. The way it has been explained so far, though, is that they will be added by way of the items you wear. I think my idea allows for the game to keep this system, while allowing for more than just a 'Look at this item I randomly found, with an OP stat/skill attached to it.' I like having to work for something, instead of being given it at random or from the get-go.
