i have a large ship and each room has a specific function. kitchen, medbay, crafting room, etc... each has its own 384slot mega locker, so no problems knowing what holds what.

I tried that, but my hoarding exceeded their variety. :(

Sadly, I am not much at aesthetics (other than in a minimalist sense), but function - I know how to build for function. :D

Thanks for the compliment. I'll be happy to show you the full castle when it's done, if you like.

Sure, other opinions and suggestions in picture format to help in my organization is welcome. I imagine this thread might end up in the screenshots section eventually, but the traffic here is a good way to spread around some stream-lined ideas for other like-minded players, which clearly there are aplenty. :)

Mind if I drop in with a little shameless self-plug? I have a mod (work in progress) called Framed, and the aim is to add tons of item frames that help organize your storage area. It's far from complete, but very much usable.

So far feedback has been a little slow, so I welcome any and all comments. ;)

I tend to place things around my house where they make sense.
For instance, my kitchen has two wall cabinets, a refrigerator and a countertop. I place cold foods, such as meat and vegetables in the refridgerator, and room temperature food items (potatoes, seeds and the like) in a cabinet. In my attic, I have lots of crates chests and random items strewn about, and this location is typically reserved for furniture and miscellany. My room has a wardrobe in which I place my vanity clothing items, there is a chest specifically for obsolete armors and a bookshelf for books and spare tech blueprints. In my backyard I have a small smithy with all of my metalworking stuff inside, and a few crates for ores and bars and finished goods within convenient reach.
I find that I don't have any issue remembering where I put stuff if I make sense of my own house and stay organised. :)

I use this exact same approach. Ranged weapons are stored next to the ranged target. Melee weapons are stored next to the melee target dummy.

Where this breaks down for me is in building materials. Did I put the blue dirt or the purple dirt in the second chest from the left? This approach is really designed to address that type of question.

I hope, for everyone's sake, the paint tool becomes usable on more blocks and has a vast color palate and the containers of dirt variety just become container of dirt

While I'm hoping for the same, I've seen a bit of how the paint tool works. And if my assumptions are correct, adding more colors and block support would be incredibly time-consuming.

This would be particularly helpful if you could use the paint tool on a stack of dirt in your inventory. I can't imagine having to individually paint thousands of pixels of dirt.

Haven't found anything bigger than 16x, but I have found that Laboratory Lockers (looted from Apex labs) stack very neatly on top of each other, and are only 2x2 in size, making them VERY compact. I've actually got LOADS of empty lockers in my storage room because of this. Top floor is clothing and vanity items, middle floor is decorative items, furniture, and background items, bottom floor is parts; dirt/stone/whatever, tree seeds, wood, tools, other stuff that doesn't fit into the other-floor categories. The refrigerator in my house holds raw meats and other non-grown food items, and the vending machine to the right holds crafted food items. The square crates in the far upper-right of the pic are my seed and harvested crop storage, as they're directly adjacent to my garden. I'm quite pleased with my garden, too, I can grow all crops at once, and I'm only missing one, maybe two seed types.

And maybe one of these days I'll get people to live in my swanky, retro-style NPC apartments upstairs. I put a lot of work into that. *Sniffle.* Also, the fountain isn't just decorative, that's the spawn point for this world, so I decided to build an open area to beam in and out without having to parkour all over the damn house just to get to my proverbial piggy bank. The lag in this place is TERRIBLE, though. :-\

I need to start hanging out with more female Starbounders... Risukage and Izabelle both have some great interior decorating skills.

Tho, I was curious about one thing in the above screenshot... She's sitting on a couch, and not in the kitchen.

Kitchen jokes aren't nice! I hope you weren't serious.
Anyway, I'm sure our male Starbounders can have the same propensity for organisation as our female ones.

No, not serious. Even you called it a kitchen "joke", so thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt.

Hey now, don't be hating on my sweet kitchen. I've got both a water cooler and a vending machine. Does your kitchen have that? I bet not! Though I do need to remember to nick one of those hanging TVs from the Apex apartments so I can watch TV from my totally cool sofa or prison bunk beds. Besides, dude, you put a table and chairs in a kitchen, not a sofa. Jeez, you must live in a tiny apartment or something. :p
