Simple Storage Labeling

I am still very much a newb, finding my way around, but I do have some experience with sandbox games. I know that storage and labeling of chests is essential for being able to find building materials and keep things organized.

I'm currently excavating my castle, and the best solution I have found is to take two squares out of the background over a chest and replace the background with whatever is in the chest.

    Here's what it looks like:

And here are a couple of close-ups:

What approach are the rest of you using?

That's a good idea for blocks and materials. Still, you have to know yourself what they mean, since anyone on first glance would still only have a vague sense of it.
"Rainbow wood means... the colors go here? Petals or dyes? Or just rainbow wood? And the rainbow tree seeds, too?"

According to the wiki, "Food can be found, grown, looted, or crafted. All food items are placeable objects for decoration as well on tables, shelves and platforms."
I haven't seen this applicable yet, and it would be interesting if you could do it with more things.
the Item Frame from Minecraft comes to mind when I think of a needed labeling system.

This looks like something I do in minecraft & terraria... So this I like and would do myself when I finally find a homeworld to call home.

item frames in minecraft I like to keep down to a minimum, so as to not cause too much fps drops. so I utilize both methods in that game. If this game had frames or signs even I would probably mix n match all of them to do such. Labeling storage I haven't even messed with in starbound yet for obvious reasons. ship space is limited in the default right now.

At the moment, at least for the ship, I just remember where everything is, and sometimes even put them near a object it relates to...

I pretty much do this too. But that's mostly because my storage consists of multiple apex lockers stacked on top of each other, so something like the original post is sort of out of the question.

Yup, it's definitely not exhaustive, but it does, at least, allow each chest to look distinctive enough that I (or someone who uses a similar system) can remember what is inside.

I'd really like writable signs to be implemented, until then its really hard/annoying to make a good storage system that's labelled.

Creative and smart use of vanilla aspects of the game. I applaud you.

yup, that is basically my ship... when I get enough my ship would be almost full of those lockers. I have enough room usually for a refinery, robotable, the anvil thing and a campfire. Also figured in a wire station, but technically I could live without, as that space in my teleport room can be filled as well. ><

Right now I am not really interested in using too many mods, as I prefer vanilla if possible, and it is not really pressing to do something like that; as there are many ways to go about organization. Thanks anyway for pointing them out though. :D

I've been doing the "chests on the ship, memorizing where they are" thing...which is why I built the base:

I just use chests of varying materials to remember what goes where - the bone chest has my really rare weapons, for example, while I stick all the instruments in Royal Chests.

Since we're talking about storage, though, does anyone know if one of the planned updates includes chests with larger storage spaces than 16 slots? I find it really odd that large chests and the like only hold as much as the boxes half their size.

something like this or this? As right now those mods are just a couple that add that. Although would be nice if the vanilla game had such already...

I think what needs to be done is to add customizable Tooltips to chests and such so when you hover over the storage device it would display a label. You could potentially use the same system for switches/consoles (like "light switch", or "Activate west door"). This could be implemented by simply changing the name of the chest/object. For example instead of 'Tech chest' or 'old chest' you would rename it 'weapon chest 1'. The name of the chest would be editable above the inventory boxes when the chest was activated... simple. The dev's would just need to add that, plus mouse over tool tips, no problem I'm sure. (joke)

that I would like even more, at least for chests and various storage things. Although wouldn't think renaming would be the thing. What they could do is have it so when placed you could shift click the chest to add a custom name to it. Kind of like adding a attribute/tag to the placed item. In a way renaming it, but not really. Probably would be a hover thing, when pressing alt or something like that.

This could though get tricky, since text would blur, so the hover option is probably better so it is one at a time. In this way it would be labeling the chests. :D

I'm currently working on a mod with labeling and labeled containers. I'd have probably finished it already, but I lost about a week and a half to real life BS.

The reason I was thinking of renaming is there is already an abundance of titles assigned to the container object

Even if you could re-assign the classification name 'storage container' I would be good.
Pressing shift to rename something is a great idea.

there are numerous craftable types of chest and container in the game. i plan to collect every chest so i can use them as ids :3

? never said anything of re-assigning anything. And the classification thing can not be, as that defines what the object is and how it functions. Although appending something in the code would be fine. Beyond the hover text outside the chest, pulling up in that graphic I can see probably the name Rainbow Chest being overridden with the new tag name visually. It still will be a rainbow chest, but with an extra special name. More likely to be saved to that object when placed & tagged with name; so the where in the long run would be either world or ship, depending on placement of object. (stating the obvious with saving)

I just have a habit to figure on how they could go about it or one of the possibilities. Although this might be going off topic a bit though.

I really like your organisation and neatness. It's simplistic and not overly artistic. Not that there is anything wrong with being artsy and creative, just that your layout on the ship and your screenshots of your base are super practical. I have a campfire on my ship, because it is the smallest (?) cooking station to cook meat on, height-wise, I think. I put it under the ship locker. If you know of another with the simple cooking meat function that is same size or smaller, lemme know.
Thanks for the screenies and ideas on how I can streamline my own stuff!
