Silver/gold/platinum gear makes no sense

Well at least you aren't digging up bronze ore... I hate it when games do that. Bronze is an alloy, not an ore!

+1 (I don't know how to vote these things up). But I agree completely. Before the patch I completely skipped gold though because I found leather armor crafted was a lot better than anything else and made me almost invincible without digging a single block (just hunt for 54 pieces of leather and craft it). Nothing really makes sense in a sci-fi game but totally agree to this.

I'm pretty sure the devs are quite aware of this, and mostly do it simply for the sake of variety. Doesn't hurt that it helps players used to Terraria understand the basic curve.

They mentioned they want to change the ores around a bit, so they might do that!

Lol I have a 2 year old thread on Terraria about ores as well. I guess I really like rocks and minerals.

I agree with a lot of what's in this thread - Gold Pickaxe? Seriously? We should be rolling with a Tungsten-Carbide pickaxe and working our way up to molecular-dissembler beams at higher Tiers.

There should be more processing and manufacturing of advanced materials as part of crafting. E.g. find coal, smelt it to coke, put it in a special crafting station to generate nanotube carbon or graphene, then combine that with plastics from your plastic production line to generate space-age polymers.

A nice fringe-benefit of this is that you couldn't cram everything in your ship. If you have to build a small factory complex it gives you a reason to make a homebase planet and adds some realism.

Yes, I used to play EVE online. This game could pick up something from the industrial processes in that game.

I agree partially with this thread, especially with the gold tools. I can live with silver and copper tools, but gold? Gold bends, for crying out loud. If you swing a gold pickaxe against a stone wall, you get a bent pickaxe.

There's an online Taiwanese game that has an extensive crafting system called Wonderland Online. The amount of equipment and tools you need to make is insane! You can craft anything like silicon, plastic, oils, rubber, metal sheeting to make more complicated things... like real industrial processing. I would really like to see something like that in Starbound, but that means you would need a lot more materials and steps to go through to make things. It makes crafting really interesting.

I don't think there is much to add but a reply. I also would like to see this scifi game take a bold stand and say "Enough with the bling, back to reality". Nerf those soft metals.

I play games just for fun.
Nearly all video games are silly if you translate them into the real world. A hero type character getting hit with hundreds of bullets (over the course of the game) and actually being alive after the first few hits. Mining equipment made from gold, armour made from diamond...

All of these are hilariously silly but that's okay. It's only a game with no intention of being realistic. Gameplay and fun come first.

I really like that idea and I'm also an ex-EVE player. Might also be interesting to take a bit from EVE's invention system. You take a crafted item apart with a chance of getting a better version of it. For the better version to be crafted you then need also some special ingridients.

i desagree, games really can be fun with realistic things, when i do something in game, that as really close it's done in real life, i feel wow amazing game, and i get really good feeling.
I just play BF3 and BF4 in hardcore, because life don't regen, can't see minimap just the map, don't know your killer are, and the most important ever FRIENDLY FIRE!!!
i love magic and sci-fi stuff, great theme... i can live with gold pickaxes, but it is really dumb, i mean magic stuff don't need broke matters to make sense is possible do magic and sci-fi things using natural rules. Get why our, humans know, don't broke this, get stuffs that we don't know like others ores, others not real stuff and mix together, but don't broke the natural world rules. I mena you can use gold ( we know it is amazing conductor, and with magic things, gold powerup or organize magic energy of some gem or other matter. BUT USE IT TO BROKEN STONE IS IDIOT, DUMB BROKE MY MIND GOLD IS NATURAL REAL ORE AND STONE IS NATURAL REAL ORE YOU CAN'T SAY GOLD SMASH STONE BECAUSE IT'S NOT TRUE )

i see grammar errors, i don't fix because i beserk this!

dont like dont use them at all , there is 5 gears
    leather >metalic >carbonic >crystalic>wtfisthisthing < endgame armor
everything that dont fall under this section is not worth to craft , so just leave it

i like how you said diamond armor because it totaly shouldn't be used for jewlery or anything and just armor made out of a gem.

I'd just be happy if they made me stop having to use pickaxes altogether. I get that my renegade character isn't a mechanical engineer, but being able to make a drill should start a whole lot sooner than it does.

Also: it shouldn't be tied to ores. In real life, we still use copper and iron and silver, despite having plenty of gold and titanium- each ore is best for a certain thing. I'd rather have each ore be best at a certain aspect- so that if I need to make more electronics, I'm hunting down copper, but if I'm trying to make weapons, maybe I'm after titanium and iron.

You can't just leave them out because you need for example the silver armor in order to craft the steel armor...

    IMO, this needs to go!

What I think should happen is that you can upgrade any armor into the next tier.
Copper to iron, iron to silver, silver to steel, steel to gold, gold to platinum...
Instead of just leaving an unused set of armor in storage or handing it down to someone else.

Yes, we discussed this earlier in the thread. Diamond does not make good armor or weapons. I'll edit the post.

Diamonds aren't brittle, I don't think. But the do have a high cleavage.
