I've noticed making weapons and armor out of silver, gold, and platinum has been a trend in crafting for many fantasy games, but it doesn't make sense. Since this is a sci-fi game, more realistic metals and alloys should be used. Tin needs to be added to smelt bronze. I suggest changing some of the tiers of gears around... Stone->Copper->Bronze->Iron->Steel->Titanium->Etc. Silver, Gold, and Platinum should be used to craft jewelry, electronics, decorations, and energy weapons.
Well, if you want a realistic output, some of those metals listed are better for some things over other things. Carbon in the form of diamond is incredibly heavy for protection it'd offer. (Trend in most games seem to represent diamond as an apex of protection, yet a simple suit of armour would weigh a thousand pounds!) As well as Steel versus Titanium. For blocks in general and weapons- Titanium is weaker than steel though it is lighter (Weight to Strength ratio, titanium has steel beaten, but I'd rather have 1 inch of steel than 1 inch of titanium.) Also - it's the future, so who knows what "nano carbon fibre" thing might exist then- so Durasteel and Impervium and all those other structures make sense. (Crystal in general tend to make terrible armour though since crystalline structures are prone to shattering.) so I think that Crystals should be used for energy weapons as well (perhaps combining crystals with metals to make those weapons?) and heavy metals with composites for armour and melee weapons? (Perhaps at some point making energy melee weapons to combine heavy metals with crystals.)
Crystals for energy weapons makes a lot of sense because they refract light to make laser beams. I like the idea of Durasteel and Impervium for higher tier gear, making it with a high-tech smelter. Diamonds are very effective to make weapon edges since they have an incredibly sharp edge. Probably not for armor though.
Heh, Diamonds are effective for cutting drills - but diamond drills have to be replaced constantly. Hitting something with any sort of crystal causes one of the electronic bonds to separate, causing it to fragment. The wide variety of monsters may be easy to kill, but a robot (as silly as it sounds trying to slice a robot.) would cause it to shatter. Despite the fact that diamonds would have a very sharp edge- they will shatter upon contact with anything blunt and hard at a wrong angle. Brittle structures have their cost. You want something flexible (just flexible enough, that is..) something rigid (such as a crystal structure) is prone to cracking For a good comparison - Look at flint, obsidian or quartz. Each varying level of "crystalline like" or crystalline structures. Obsidian was incredibly sharp- 100 times that of surgical steel! - However, go ask the Aztec warriors what they thought of Spanish Steel? (or llama skin cloaks)
I agree heartily! However, on the note of crystal armour, perhaps that could be a game-play element? -Offers alot of armour, but has a risk of shattering and harming the wearer? EG: good for ceremonial guards.
Make silicon craftable from sand, put gold and silicon together for circuitry, mix that with the wiring tool for making hi-tech gear. That would make me happy ^w^
Perhaps Graphene can be used after Impervium tier? It's supposed to be the strongest material known to man.
I agree. Aren't gold and platinum armors just a base (and technically a downgrade) anyway? I'd like to be able to craft an armor set that doesn't require an armor I wasn't planning on using anyway.
Agreed very much. This had the opportunity to be "another reason why Starbound is a smarter game than Terraria", but instead the same mistake was repeated. It's such an arbitrary notion that gold is -better- than silver.
Agreed- and Well, considering Impervium is the end game for this, and Graphene has a lot of misconceptions, I don't think it'd be after Impervium (or useful for anything other then electrical uses, or linings for things.) It's a new craze which is fairly misunderstood (Manchester is constructing a new laboratory to research other possible uses.). It's strong, but it's also 1 atom thin, and yes, it could be mass produced and made into a suit of some sort by layering, but even in space terms, there are better uses, and better materials for everything. Considering your character also starts out without much, I propose leather - Leather + Copper, Bronze, Leather + Iron, Iron, Damascus Steel (Wootz Steel) (Weapons and the like.) After the molten core - Steel, Titanium, Carbon Composite Sheets (Ballistic Ceramic Plates) Durasteel (Perhaps normal steel with something like a graphene layer to draw from the metallic ions and "repair the steel" thus making it stronger? Carbon + Unknown metal 2 to create composite sheet 2 (Forezium) Another combination material with Carbon to create a 3rd sheet, and finally impervium. Carbon material can be extracted from sand and coal and the like, but it would also give another "sink" for resources like dirt. A lot of x to create 1 carbon material. The carbon material taking on the colour of the material bled into it. That right there would be the other end of the crafting scale - Silicon, Silver, Gold, Graphene to create power sources and high tech gear, combined with crystals. This could be used to create Laser guns, Shields and other things. Actual guns would be a combination of like, Ash and Sulfur + Wootz Steel and later actual steel/Composites. - Perhaps I should make an actual post with a new crafting outline. Anyone else think this would be a good crafting system?
i hate see game with gold/ silver/ diamond what ever set... it's unreal, armours never use gold because its easy to reshape but is great to circuits more realistic craft will be really nice in sci-fi game!!!
I actually wanted to suggest the same, I hate the trend to run around with golden pickaxes in these kind of games, it makes absolutely no sense. Also, why can't I make Tools from Iron or Steel?! I would already be satisfied with a change of name and colour of gold...
If they made iron even MORE in demand, they'd really need to ratchet up its availability, because it's already a bit under-available for how much it's used.
I see what you are getting at, but I don't think they expect the minerals to be taken so literally and instead viewed as more of a ranking system based on typical trends that are easy to understand. To the people saying that it is not sci-fi enough, keep in mind we are only seeing the first 3 of 10 tiers. As you progress through the tiers the level of sci-fi seems to increase. I expect the end materials and armors to satisfy the sci-fi craving that we are looking for. The game is based on starting with almost nothing (except your spaceship) and working up to the heavy sci-fi level. I have seen a lot of threads discussing and complaining about this kind of thing and some people forget that we are only seeing the very beginning of the game.
It's not that gold is better than silver. It's simply more expensive and monsters flinch when hitting you because they fear how much are you gonna charge them for repairs.
no it's not, in fact from what i've seen coal is the most used ore in the game. i'm always running low on that. conversely after clearing tier 2 i have 1K+ ore in copper, iron, silver, and titanium. i'd smelt it but i believe ores make for an excellent savings account. refine 1K copper ore and you have 10K pixels. haven't bothered with the others but this way my savings are death proof
gold can't used for hard work like mining! it's easy to know this, but every game take this mistake :/
