Short and to the point, i love the way you present this idea, but lets take it to another level shall we? Signs would be great for marking directions but what would also be amazing would either be hard-wood or holo lables! =D
There could be a signboard for every weapon bar you could smelt. Like: Steel Bar Durasteel Bar Ferozium Bar Violium Bar Impervium Bar Just add a signboard to the common items you can craft while upgrading your tech. By default you should build a wood plank signboard at a wooden crafting table. You should not be able to rename the signboard, cause then it would need an own edit-window. But instead, which I think is a great idea, the creation-window could contain another input-field for some BluePrints. You type some text on the creation-window (where you build all other items) before you push the build-button. The signboard will be build as a new item with it's own name like "Wooden plank signboard [Read this and you're stupid!]" or "Violium signboard [Floran blocks]" or "Impervium signboard [Ssstab all hylotl!!!]". One problem could be harassment, because you can write everything on a signboard. This needs filter. While you can say "You damn m**** a**** of c**** t****", you can write this on a signboard, too. It's the old problem with user content, because someone with a lot of time and a lot of insane mind could write such things using blocks. too. So I would say a filter should be there like the chat-filter, but it won't catch all badass text. Instead the game gods may control sample new signboard items. signboard could have several implementations, so I can't judge how it would best be implemented. Maybe as a database-table with type, text, etc, where you easily are able to control sample. After first implementation (hope it will come, cause it enrichs the game), there could be several addons using auto-generic anim-signboards like some monitors have for fun. "Hail to the ape!" with some text-effect like fading in. But that's deeply optional
